Milwaukee offers a 5 year warranty on their cordless power tools and up to 3 years on batteries (depending on model). They are among the best and cost a fraction of Snap-On's offerings.

Milwaukee isn’t as cheap as people think. A couple of months ago I was in the market for a long neck 1/4” drive cordless ratchet. All I needed was a bare tool. Snap On was about $290, Milwaukee was $305. To be fair, the Milwaukee pricing was from the Cornwell truck and Gearwrench trucks. From Home Depot, the Milwaukee was less expensive.

@@ghostwrench2292 Yeah, you have to look online and find all of the deals on Milwaukee tools. They definitely have lower prices than Snap on or Mac/Matco. Plus, they have their M and M/Fuel lines that compete with the others but at different prices.

Jeremiah Mckenna Exactly, the Black Friday holiday season is usually when the best online deals are to be found. I remember last year during the holidays, HD offered the 1/2" Milwaukee Fuel High Torque impact wrench with a 5 a.h battery, charger and a nice blow-molded case for $269. USD. That's a very solid deal for what you're getting.

Awhile back I was wanting to get some snap on tools and was lookin out for one of the trucks on the road. Im an electrician by trade so I dont have a guy coming by our shop like mechanics do. One day I found one and called the number on the side of his truck and he said he was too busy to stop. But then he asked me what I was looking for and I told him I for sure wanted some ratchets and wanted to look at some ratchet wrenches. He said he didnt have either on the truck. Come on, thats total BS and it really rubbed me the wrong way. Ever since then I could care less about snap on. He could have sold several hundred dollar of tools right then but wouldn't give me the time of day.

So whats he say well he said guess u shouldnt buy tools then (mind u i havent bought tools from him in 6 months) so he said u have to options, either give me the cash u have or i walk to ur box and just start taking tools to resell and put towards ur bill (mund u also i have never missed a payment and nor have a ever payed less then my normal ammount i have to) so i ended up having to give him my last 40$ i had in my wallet.

Absolutely agree, regarding the franchisees. Our old Snap-on guy did not show up at anything close to a regular basis (i.e. ghosting for 3 or 4 weeks at a time). Near the end, his truck was basically empty and almost everything had to be ordered. The new Snap-on guy has already missed several weeks, including the last two (2) weeks in a row (no call, no show). Our owner is about ready to tell the new guy to just get lost permanently and we'll just drive over to another territory to make purchases, get warranties handled. Additionally, as a consequence of these Snap-on drivers not showing up and being a general pain in the ass to deal with, our Mac guy is killing it at our shop. He shows up every week (and will call someone at the shop on the rare occasion he won't be by). His truck is stocked, no hassles on warranty and good with on truck payment terms on larger purchases.

I love snap-on tools..but I've learned to love other brands lately. You spoke on their basic everyday hand tools being too high and damn I agree. I had two 3/8 deep chrome sockets warrantied and the rep removed them from a new set. There was a sticker on the 12 piece set for $321.00. I dont remember what I gave for my set that I bought new several years ago but I'm pretty sure it wasn't 321.00. They just released a shallow, semi deep, and deep set in foam that's over $1,000 !!!! That's insane and especially when you can buy Williams usa set that are identical minus logos on Ebay for 78.00. From an authorized Williams distributor so warranty shouldn't be an issue. I was skeptical but a co worker ordered up a set and they are the same identical sockets. Just shows how much mark up is in a logo.

I purchased a Mr. Big with 2 hutches and a locker about a year ago. The box had some concerns that needed to be addressed and snap on still hasn't addressed all of the concerns. I talk to my dealer every week about it with no results. Its easy stuff to fix like one of the trims pieces on a hutch wasn't put on correctly. Its tough to understand why they would keep a customer waiting for so long to make it right. Its hard to justify the price if they can't back it with service. I wrench for a fleet and prefer to do it with American made tools but the company should earn the business.

Four decades ago the choice was Snap-On, Craftsman, or several German (Hazet, Stahlwille) companies (Mac, MATCO, Cornwall, etc were minor players). You bit the bullet and bought Snap-On because you could make payments. But even then it was a battle to get a broken tool replaced. Amazon and Harbor Freight--and the box stores--have completely changed the way tools are bought. Snap-On will continue to lose market share until they are purchased by Stanley Black and Decker.

  • @josesaldana9252
    @josesaldana9252 3 роки тому +10

Snap On is a tough sell. It's a 10% hand tool. Someone smarter than me can talk about the electrocity stuff.
What I mean by a 10% hand tool is doing oil changes, brake jobs and other maintenace stuff it's pick your poison. Husky, Tekton, Gearwrench, whatever you find on Letgo or yard sales will work on that stuff and as a 10 year tech that's the majority of what we do.
Get into stuff like alignments and the importance of the strength of an open end wrench on a tie rod becomes apparent. Most of the prosumer stuff will work here too with no issues.
Its when you have stuff like a 82 Corvette that's been sitting and rusting for 4 years and you have to get the exhaust bolts and the brake lines off that Snap On shines, and that's a tough sell to a young person walking into the industry as a luber goober with a shit wage. Add in people that leave the industry and default on their loans that the franchisee has to eat and now you see the markup is to cover them and protect the franchisee.
I think Snap On could suceed by opening retail stores with display tools and stock them with parts from junkyards so people can try before they buy and see where they shine and where there dollar actually goes. It would also ease the franchisees from having to display tools at every shop. You go to the demo store, place a deposit and a franchisee contacts you. You could set up seminars and continuing education things and make it a networking place for pros. Hell charge a $10 cover to keep out the deadbeats

Similar story over here in the UK. Back in the trade after a 5 year gap and previously bought a large percentage of my tools from snap on as i liked the tools, the image and received good overall back up from the franchisee. Im now however in a different area with a new rep and he is awful. Lucky if we see him once every 2 months even though we are on a trading estate with nearly every single car manufacturer on the market. I still like the tools but refuse to line the pocket of a sales rep who cannot make the effort. Premium tools at a premium price must have premium sales and after sales support otherwise you do not get overall value for money.

They will be fine. They have tons of government and industrial/commercial contracts, and the truck marketing/financing model makes it easy to sell fantastic (and overpriced) tools to techs who can't actually afford them. Their stock exploded in value starting in 2011 and has stayed very strong since, despite internet competition.
All of the problems you mentioned are certainly valid, but they will almost certainly be around for a very long time.

The prices on some items are just more than I am willing to pay. Dealer inconsistency is the second issue. They used to be there every week. Now we make jokes about the dealer actually showing up a couple weeks in a row. It really sucks when you need to get something warranted and it takes 3-4 weeks.

I was introduced to Snap-On at the start of my apprenticeship. Other trades people told me, "buy it right, buy it once". And I did. Back then the tool van was full, I mean almost overloaded. The franchisee knew the market and would show off the latest gear, we snapped it up! Now the van comes to town once a fortnight and is almost empty every time. Why didn’t they just make the first one 70ft pounds brake away to begin with that would of smashed the market but nah not Snap-on they gonna double dip!!

What makes Snap-on great also hurts them they make 80% of there tools they don’t rebrand as much of the tools as the other companies. The prices need to do a better job of matching the market. The other thing to keep in mind they make more USA made tools than any other tool truck brand. Great video

I've had 3 Snap on Reps in the past 25 years. First one was old and didn't have anything on the truck. Second one was good until he got in over his head, helicopter flying lessons and all. My recent Rep I've had for close to 10 years and he has been awesome. They are way behind and overpriced on battery Op tools like you said. Warranty with some dealers is terrible especially if the dealer is on credit hold. Bet ya in the next year or 2 HF will experiment with a tool truck. Once that happens look out.

Disclaimer: I'm not a pro technician, I'm a serious home user with some technical qualifications.
I like Snap-On tools, and I use them frequently, but as far as I can see, the key problem that Snap-On has is that the tool truck franchise model of selling is really outmoded, when you have Amazon and the like delivering more or less anything you want the next day. Selling only through tool trucks really limits Snap-On's potential reach to people like myself who aren't full-time mechanics. I have lots of Snap-On tools, nearly all of which were bought used or new from eBay - I have never bought a single one from a truck. If Snap-On is content to cater exclusively to the pro technician market, then good luck to them, but that's a ton of potential sales they are missing because a lot of users don't even have access to their products.

I’ve dealt with many tool men over the years, had one that refused to transfer my account to his franchise and wouldn’t take my money 1990’ish, after 2 months of non payment him and big Wayne the field rep, yes, I’m in Dayton, so you may know him. They came to repo my box, till he found out the dealer who didn’t make the sale didn’t want to do the transfer. It got squared away, but there’s your typical franchise dealer. Had another do that to me in 2000, I paid the bill off and didn’t buy anything from snap on till 2019 when I stole an epiq box because he lowballed me saying I wouldn’t buy it no matter how cheap it was, I made him give me a price, then I made him stick to it and unload it. I seem to be a magnet for this stuff...

A couple guys I work with discussed and analyzed snap ones prices as opposed to the 90s when I started out. We used the point of how many hours of work to buy a specific tool from the truck. Ie a 1/2 in long ratchet. In 90s terms it took about 3 hours of wages to buy now its 5-6 hours of wages. Snap on is almost twice as expensive to buy as it was in the 90 s compared to salaries in my area. This is why they have trouble selling their tools now. I mostly use my dealer for warranty and I know he gets pissed a bit but the prices are nuts now.

Snap on is a finance company that just happens to also make tools. They continue to put more and more of their costs onto their dealers, and since they've made service territories too small, many dealers can't stay profitable unless they can buy another territory as well.
Their electronic tools are lagging behind brands that are dedicated to scan tools or power tools.
I started back when tool trucks were the only way to get quality tools, in the early 90s, I have not been on a tool truck in a few years, Ebay is my snap on tool source.

Snap on does have the student purchasing program, but even then, their tool selection is limited, and still a little pricey, especially when you add on the interest, if you finance.
But there are other brands out there that also have a student program. Many have starter kits with the ability to add more kits so that you don't buy a bunch of double or triplicate tools and can hit the ground running. Heck, today I found out that SK has financing, but zero interest. What? That is awesome.
This is from their website... THE DETAILS
Purchases of over $30 (maximum $1,000) are equally sliced into 4 payments.
After your first order ships, you'll make the first payment.
The next three payments are collected every two weeks.
No credit check and no fees (unless your scheduled payment fails).
No credit check to start=no impact to your credit score.
Gear Wrench has something as well. I think this is where these other companies are going to shine a lot more and bring more tech's into their side, at least for the hand tools and boxes/carts etc.

Just Go to Snap-On's website and search for "Insulated Tools" and you'll see that in just the last 2 years Snap-On already has a huge jump on their competitors in this area. I have a great Snap On dealer. I have never had an issue with warranty, he has warranted tools that I dug up that were rusty that I didn't but from him. He didn't have to do that. The warranty states that it is only valid to the original purchaser. Are Snap On tools expensive? Yes they are, I have spent over 200,000 on Snap On tools in the last four years without any regret and will continue to buy from them. Snap On is on top for a reason and I don't think that is ever going to change. I've bought and used them all and my personal opinion is there is none better than Snap On. Cheaper? Yes. Better? No. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But I think that most people that hate on Snap On secretly wants Snap On but they can't afford it.

In the past 15 years I’ve been at a .gov agency where we aren’t allowed to have our personal boxes and tool. They have odd contracts for buying tools. In the past 5 years we have been buying nothing but GearWrench hand tools & Milwaukee battery powered tools. We beat the shit out of those tools and I see no quality difference in these tool vs the Snap On tools that we have. Absolutely agree with point no1 . Franchise look after you when you spend money with them every week, but when you not they can’t be bother dealing with warranty . Honestly rest of yours point are bang on too lol. But this not stop me buying more tools of the truck . Btw. Great vid and w8ing for part 2 .

Milwaukee will and has (IMO) defeated Snap-on’s power tools. Warranty, performance, and cost Milwaukee has outperformed. However I do think Snap-on has the best torque wrenches on the market. But for electric ratchets, drills and impacts Milwaukee all the way

Snapon torque wrenches are nice but for much less money check out the SP electric torque wrenches. I also thing snapon still takes the cake over Milwaukee in electric ratchets though🤷‍♂️

Rustbelt Mechanic no no I totally understand. There’s a guy in our shop who loves the Snap-on ratchets, but myself and a few others prefer the Milwaukee. I like the paddle, he likes the button. The price, and the fact that it’s brushed and not brushless like Milwaukee’s is what steers me away from Snap-on’s ratchets. But at the end of the day it all comes down to preference lol

Your correct here, your number 1 reason is correct also I'd like to add that the inconsistency between trucks to repair tools and not wanting to. I've lost tools as my local truck went out of business and they didn't register the repairs with snap-on UK. Also, I don't have a snap-on truck around me anymore so I have to check the website for deals and I'd rather deal with a person

If Tekton gets a fleet of tool trucks, it will likely be the end for Snap On. They need to make their tools more affordable and stop ripping us off! I get it, snap on makes quality tools made in the USA, but just because its made in the united states doesnt justify it costing 2x as much as a quality tool made in Taiwan.

I think you pretty well hit the nail on the head. Accessibility could be a valid point, as well. Only catering to the professional market leaves a lot of the market share to the average person out of their reach. Professionals visit the truck AND HF/Lowe's/Amazon. The vast majority of average Joes don't even consider the option of Strap-On because there is no store that sells it and they don't think of them in the online capacity.

Over 35 years in the industry and I have my fair of snap on but there are definitely other tool brands just as good or better they are going to price themselves right out of the market. Mac tools have really stepped up there game and has great deals at reasonable price in my opinion

You are 1000% spot on with the 5 reasons, and it was very well presented and laid out. Snap on is like like a Hewlett Packard style mgmt vs Apple (Matco) or Samsung (Mac Tools)- They need to hire new Marketing and new technologist in their companies

you do know that Milwaukee and DeWalt our way way larger companies then snap-on is look up the information on the amount of employees in the size of the companies they blow snap-on way out of the watersnap-on just doesn't seem to want to adapt to the newer technology because they're still making money off the old technology

I couldnt agree more. Our new rep is decent but the guy before him was terrible. Like you said, the older guy was about to retire and didnt give two f**ks lol. Hopefully snap-on sees your videos and do something about their price, warranty, and for the love of god why am i waiting for a socket rack for over 3 months?! I think after two weeks it should be free lol. Thanks for letting me let off some steam. I really like snap on lol

I just put a list of Proto together for everything I need to work on Japanese and American and the Snap On price was double for tools that simply don't warrant double the price. If a Proto tool breaks I can have a new one in my box in 3 hours. Doing basic calculations I'd spend 2/3 the price assuming I have a breakage every month and that's assuming Stanley won't warranty my tools and they will 1/1 against snap on.

My main thing with snapon is the high price - you can buy another tool that will do just as good icon tools from harbor freight for example a fraction of the cost but still gets the job done people realize it’s not how much you spend on the tools that makes you a good mechanic and snapon will need to drop their prices or come out with some NEXT level stuff in order to stay competitive IMO

  • @jmackinjersey1
    @jmackinjersey1 4 роки тому +1

I think the reason you said there were only the big three tool companies is because of marketing, and the tool trucks, that were in your view so often. Many US brand/made tools have been around for as long, or even longer, or just a few years less than they have been. just like soft drinks, we mostly think about Coke, Sprite, Pepsi and A&W Root Beer. But in reality, there are several others that are out there and have been for decades as well. Let's not forget Craftsman was a major player up until about ten years ago when they went the opposite direction of anything and everything they ever stood for.
But I think where SO and the others shine isn't so much their hand tools, but more along the lines of their specialty tools. And of curse their trucks and payment plans.
But I do agree that now with the internet, it has become a lot easier for us to find the once obscure U.S. tool brand, or even the fact that there have been a lot of upgrades in Chinese and Taiwan manufacturing processes, and German tools also becoming more mainstream and popular. I'm all for friendly competition.
