- Three celebrities pit their linguistic and numerical skills against each other and the clock in this quiz show. Hosted by Michael Hing, maths whiz Lily Serna and wordsmith David Astle.
Contestants: Gen Fricker, Harley Breen, Concetta Caristo
Dictionary Corner guest: Adam Saunders
Original air date: 17 October 2022
Background:
Celebrity Letters And Numbers is the #Aussie version of Channel 4's 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their #Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations in 2012.
History:
Countdown is Channel 4’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the numbers round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). #DCDL debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » ("the longest word") using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 50th anniversary.
"I want an inverted T please"
"No way, this is Australia"
I really wish they’d raise the height of the board and the numbers table! It looks so awkward for her to be bending over just to write on the board!
I mean, the fact she’s writing on a whiteboard with a dry wipe marker in 2022 makes me feel really uncomfortable.
There should be a touchpad on the table in front of her to write on.
1. (75-1)x3x4+(50/2)x3=888+75=963 or (75-1)x4+50/2=321x3=963
2. (75+8)x4=332 or (50-8/4)x9-100=332
3. Out of time: (75+9-5)x7=553+100=653
963:
Besides Lily’s solution, I found one other, similar solution (which is also based on 321*3)
50 * 2 = 100
100 - 1 = 99
99 * 4 = 396
396 - 75 = 321
321 * 3 = 963
I like your solution. You haven't added anything to reach 321. You also remembered to multiply by 3 to get to 963. Lily worked out 296 add 25 equals 321, and then 321 multiplied by 3 equals 963. I did,
50÷2=25
(75-1)×4=296
25+296=321
321×3=963
Lily's method:
75-1=74
74×4=296
50÷2=25
296+25=321
321×3=963
Demonstrates that there's different ways to achieve 963.
"you can" is definitely Lily's catchphrase...
my solution for 963:
75 + 2 = 77
50 * 77 = 3850
3850 - 1 + 3 = 3852
3852 / 4 = 963
Second numbers:
50-9=41
41×8=328
328+4=332
Third numbers:
50÷5=10
(75-9)=66
66×10-7=653
They also got a pregnant woman omg
Lots of multiplying in the numbers game. Who would've guessed?
Fun fact: Your comment is an anagram of "omg They also got a woman pregnant"
@@alexplorer they multiply humans by dividing their cells
First numbers:
50÷2=25
+(75-1)×4=296 = 321
321×3=963.
963: 50 x (75 + 2) = 3850 + (3 - 1) = 3852 / 4 = 963
332:
75 + 8 = 83
83 x 4 = 332
332 75+8=83×4=332
332:
100 + 75 - 9 = 166
8 - 4 = 2
166 * 2 = 332
50 - 9 = 41
41 * 8 = 328
328 + 4 = 332
50 + 8 = 58
58 * 4 = 232
232 + 100 = 332
8÷4=2
(100+75-9)=166
2×166=332
Also works
963 75+2=77×50=3850 +3-1=3852÷4=963
50/2 = 25 75-1 = 74X4 = 296+25 = 321X3 = 963
75+8 = 83X4 = 332
8/4 = 2 100+75 = 175-9 = 166X2 = 332
100/50 = 2 8/2 = 4 75+9 = 84X4 = 336-4 = 332
50-9 = 41X8 = 328+4 = 332
100-8 = 92/4 = 23X9 = 207+75 = 282+50 = 332
100-8 = 92/4 = 23X9 = 207+50 = 257+75 = 332
75-50 = 25+4 = 29X8 = 232+100 = 332
8/4 = 2 50-2 = 48X9 = 432-100 = 332
50/5 = 10 75-9 = 66X10 = 660-7 = 653
50X9 = 450/75 = 6 100-6 = 94X7 = 658-5 = 653
10-7 = 93 50+5 = 55X9 = 495+93 = 588+75 = 653
75-7 = 68 50+5 = 55X9 = 495+68 = 563+100 = 653
50-7 = 43 75+5 = 80X9 = 720+43 = 763-100 = 653
