    A very good presentation of the types of Trex available. However, what I'd hoped to hear was 1) just how long the colors of Trex boarding look like new (since UVA & UVB blanches the color of everything) and 2) if there's any treatment compound which can be used to return long exposed Trex back to it's original color as carbonate will not naturally absorb stains into it's grain such as real wood does. I'd really appreciate knowing these issues. Thanks much!

      The Fade and Stain Warranty is 25 Years. They will warranty their capped composite decking any time within that period if the color shift is greater than 5 Delta E units...which would be largely unnoticeable to the human eye even though 1 unit is technically possible to be noticeable. If you put a brand new board beside a 20 year old board that has shifted 4-5 units...you will be able to see a very slight shift in colour. To my knowledge, nothing is going to bring that colour back long term. There are of course generic plastic revitalizers on the market that would likely help in the short term, similar to products that you would use on car bumpers and such. However, my guess is you may be referring to older non-capped product that did not have a fade warranty and would noticeably fade in a short amount of time. There are "composite oils" that could be applied that would add a richness back to the board...but I believe there are very few reasons one should use them. Seems quite gimmicky to me...and now adds a level of maintenance to your deck that you weren't supposed to have. But if you're that insistent on trying to give it a refresh...they do typically make a small difference. Thanks for the questions!

    From the US here, in north central Ohio. Nice video guys. We are trying to figure out how to build a new deck. Debating on composite vs wood. We had wood and tore it out for a water repair. It was in bed shape anyway. My number one concern is how slippery the composite may be when wet or slippery from cold in winter. I love the new composite colors in enhanced naturals. Foggy Warf or Rocky Harbor. But the wood was constantly needing updates, cleaning, etc. It would get green film and slippery. I had fallen on the stairs and broke my ankle a year ago in January. Bad break. So you see my dilemma and concern. Is there any composite with a non or less slippery surface? Thanks for all the information.

    I work at the ProDesk at a 'Big Box' store, and our Trex guy told us the new line requires a 12" joist center. That's what I've been passing onto the Pros and DIYers when they order the Enhance (Basic or Naturals line).

      So, I went to work today and checked the Trex Installation Guide. According to the book, 16" joist centers are still okay. I'm going to call the Trex representative on Monday (I couldn't get a hold of her today).

      Sorry for the late reply! The rep is misinformed (about his own product :) ). 16" centers for residential application is all that is required for Trex's whole lineup included Enhanced. Of course 12" feels better under foot like all decking.

      I had a customer in the other day with a piece of old decking they were trying to match, and they came in saying "we need to match this, we are pretty sure it's Trex." I took a quick look, turned it over, and said "it's Fiberon". They looked at me, "are you sure? How do you know?" I said " because of the style and depth of the embossing for one, but mostly because of the size and shape of the wood speck filler in the core of the board." I don't know if they thought I was serious or not until I should them some samples from current generation Trex and Fiberon...and then they just thought it was completely ridiculous that I knew what it was by looking at the specks inside the core of the board. What can I say, we nerd out on this stuff. :)

    Comparing Trex Transcend (probably earth tones) vs. TimberTech/Azec Harvest. We are installing this deck around a pool and are wondering how much more slip resistant Harvest is than Transcend. What would you recommend? Thanks.

    • @TheUltimateDeckShop
      @TheUltimateDeckShop  3 роки тому

      Harvest will outperform Transcend on the traction metric. If I had to rate them on a scale of 10, I would say Harvest is a 7/10 for slip resistance, while Transcend would be a 5/10 at best.

    • @TheUltimateDeckShop
      @TheUltimateDeckShop  4 роки тому

      Hi Kendra. Yes we have sold quite a bit of the Enhance line from Trex over the past year and a bit...mostly Foggy Wharf and Rocky Habor...but a bit of Coastal Bluff as well. We haven't had any issues with it. The fading is warranties so that should be fairly safe and consistent between C.B. and Spiced Rum. But Spiced Rum will for sure be a more durable option. The Trex Transcend line that Spiced Rum is in, is one of the most durable products in the market. I would give it a 9/10 for scratch resistance, while the Enhance line would be around a 4/10. Hope that helps!

    Quality and durability wise what is the difference between select and enhance? Why is Transcend more better? Is quality that much better? Don’t understand the pricing?

    • @TheUltimateDeckShop
      @TheUltimateDeckShop  5 років тому +1

      Quality and durability are comparable between Enhance and Select. Enhance Naturals are much nicer looking, but Select has some unique colors and a 7/8" thickness plank with no scalloping, so therefore hidden fasteners like Cortex plugs are available. Transcend is a noticeable step up yes. It's a full 1" thick board, has a much more durable and thicker cap, beautiful colors. It is a big price jump up from Select and Enhance, but if the budget is available, it for sure has its benefits. But if you're on a budget, then Enhance offers an incredible value.

    • @TheUltimateDeckShop
      @TheUltimateDeckShop  5 років тому +1

      @@ruchio Your welcome! I think you're best bet is to look at both Saddle options and see which grain pattern you prefer. Also, if you're planning to use a companion color with it as a picture frame or something, then Select will give you a dark brown option in Woodland Brown, whereas Enhance will give you a light brown option in Beach Dune. And the final factor is whether you care about hiding the screws with Fastenmaster Cortex plugs for not...if so, then Select it is!

    Can you comment on any preference between fully capped and partial capped boards? Heard mixed thoughts on whether it’s more important for more protection or to allow the core to breath.

    • @TheUltimateDeckShop
      @TheUltimateDeckShop  5 років тому

      The boards core most certainly does NOT need to breath. In 95% of instances, the capping of the backside is irrelevant. However, in situations where the bottom of the boards will not have proper ventilation...like a ground level deck or on a dock, then it would be important to be protected on the backside to make sure the wood flour component does not absorb moisture which would potentially result in failure.

      @@TheUltimateDeckShop Thanks for the reply. Any thoughts of product performance between Trex Transcend and Fiberon Symmetry & Horizon lines? Love the look of the Fiberon (trex just ok), but most of the local deck builders seem to recommend Trex. Difficult to determine if that is just out of familiarity or if there is a real performance difference.

    • @TheUltimateDeckShop
      @TheUltimateDeckShop  5 років тому

      @@vanb0057 I would say their position is based 99% on familiarity and brand power. Trex and Fiberon both make good products. In fact Fiberon was the first brand to market with a capped composite, first to market with a 25 year fade and stain warranty, and first to market with variagtated colours. All 3 of those things are now commonplace in every good brand of decking, and Fiberon lead the way.
      Now... Trex Transcend vs Fiberon Horizon. Transcend will be more durable and not be quite as slippery. It has more aggressive streaking in the Tropical line as well. Fiberon Horizon is beautiful. Likely one of the nicest looking lines out there. The sweeping colours are second to none. But the line is quite slippery especially when wet, and scratches show up quite easily because of the very smooth surface. Fiberon is capped on all sides which MAY be a benefit depending on the install scenario. Warranties are nearly identical, 25 Years Fade, Stain, and Structural on both...there is an option for a Labour Warranty from Fiberon as well if you have it installed by an approved volume installer.
      In the end, they are both good products. Go with Trex Transcend for the durability and slightly better traction (althought still a bit slippery)...go with Fiberon if you love the colouring or need the fully wrapped boards (ground level deck or dock).

      It's adds an additional second.of thought but it's rarely an issue. Fiberon and TimberTech have had scalloped boards for years with no issues on stairs. Trex plastic decking and all the others actually look OK ...if you stand about 10 yards away. When you stand next to it - they all look like plastic sticks- which is what they are. Great that they do not need much care, but you still have to walk on it and look at it- Ugly! Sorry, but I cannot believe anyone would put that on their deck. But, hey different strokes and all. Maybe take a look at the bamboo composite decking - it actually is mostly a wood product so it looks like it- very nice looking and eco friendly. That is the only product I have seen that is good enough to have on a deck surface instead of actual hardwood. Care is very low too- wash and reseal every 2-4 years depending on climate & conditions. Just my 2 cents.

    • @TheUltimateDeckShop
      @TheUltimateDeckShop  4 роки тому

      Thank you for the feedback. The plastic look is very subjective and depends on the product. A board like Trex Enhance Saddle...yeah that looks very plasticy. Azek Mahogany? Most people can't tell it apart from hardwoods without touching it. Higher end boards replicate the look of wood much better than low cost stuff. As to bamboo WPC composites, it's just another type of wood (grass) filler. No more or no less wood than other wood plastic composites. And the benefits are debatable. Everyone has their formula. For a composite that really has a distinct advantage in their formula, look at Deckorators Voyage...no organic material at all...and beautiful!

      These boards are all break strength tested to well exceed requirements. However, larger dogs with claws can scratch the decking. Some lines are more durable than others.
