No, people do not not smile in their passport photos because of a microchip. Microchips are not used in passports to store the person's data, including the distance from nose to mouth. The distance from nose to mouth is not a security feature. The main reason why people do not smile in their passport photos is because smiling can distort the facial features, making it more difficult for facial recognition software to identify the person. A neutral expression is considered to be more accurate and representative of a person's appearance. This is important for security purposes, as it makes it more difficult for people to use false identification documents. In addition, smiling can also make it difficult to see the person's eyes. The eyes are one of the most important features in a facial recognition scan, so it is important to make sure that they are visible in the photo. Finally, smiling can also make the person look younger than they actually are. This can be a problem if the person's passport photo is used to verify their identity at a later date.

@@dominicg2456 I don't know which part you mean. They do scan your face at (edit: some, not most) airports when you're flying especially at customs. I have had to stop and look into a Logitech webcam many times. Upon entering the U.S. the last time, the first agent scanned my face, said my name, asked me a few questions, and didn't even look at my passport. They scanned my face at the country I was leaving, so I'm pretty sure he had that scan, and when he scanned in Detroit it pulled up my info. In fact, I flew during COVID and we had to pull our masks down for this process. Even in the countries which took COVID way more seriously. You also usually have to take your glasses off for glare. Edit: *this is new tech and not at all airports by any means* But it is still true and being used daily
They scan your face at the airport too. It needs to match your face to the passport. I was told that it's not fun to stop an exhausted traveler coming from a 6+ hour flight and force them to smile to get their scan to match their passport photo.
@@lizzyblitz07 that isn't true
It's not a secret so idk what you mean saying it's not true 😅
@@lizzyblitz07 there's a difference between a scan and a picture.
I couldn't thank Zack enough because finally there's a reason to a question I've been pondering for, what, a decade I suppose? Needless to say, Zack, thanks man.

@@DARKXWOLF1747it’s creepy not to smile. And besides just a polite 🙂 won’t distort your face like he says it would. It’s a passport photo not a mugshot
@@Minelaughter What

nah bro one time when i was very young i had to take my passport photo and when i barely even smiled, the dude taking the pic kept yelling at me to stop so i started crying and we had to stay there for 30 minutes retaking pics bc the dude kept yelling at me when i was “smiling” and making me cry which turned my eyes red. finally another person came and told him “stop making her cry or you wont get thru this” and he finally took a decent photo of me. i hated that day 💀
Damn bro😂😭💀
Damn I feel you
I'm so sorry
Your father shouldve srop kicked dude
@@Dude_Ronin it was actually my mom with me that day lmao but yeah
My passport has no Micro-chip. I still can't smile. Your logic has a counter example. Your turn sir.
Bruh they really gonna look at my passport and be like
"Yeah that's not him. Here you can see his lips have a 2.7 cm spread but if you look at him standing over there they clearly have a 3.0 spread. Give em the death penalty for identity fraud"
No, but automatic face recognition systems e.g. e-gates will look at that
As a Spanish person, I’m glad to say that we’re allowed one of the few countries that are allowed to smile in passports

You can smile but as long as if it you didn’t squint your eyes to much

@@meowclaws4690 you could smile as long you dont show your teeth
In Poland we can’t smile in any documents, passports, driving license, ID, military booklet etc. but it’s not a problem, we don’t usually smile.
polish experience

Nawet nie wiedziałem , że nie można bo w Polsce nikt normalny tak porostu się nie uśmiecha na ulicy...
That's the same in Czechia as well.

This guy just casually has the answer to everything 😂😂😂😂
The airport security asks you for your passport after a 14 hour flight.
You will not be smiling
can confirm lmao you'll wanna just lay down and die
My passport photo looks like I’m a criminal. The lighting is awful, the saturation is atrocious, but apparently my library taken passport photo wasn’t good enough so they had to take it at the place instead. At least take a good photo, I look god awful ugly (I don’t wear makeup on a regular basis, the photo was just that bad). Ever since I got that photo, everyone always has to stare at my photo for a second longer to make sure it’s mine.
That just means youre ugly. I take mine with full confidence cause I dont give a fuck.
The fact that in that passport is written "nationality: UA-camr" 💀
Where this guy puts his watermarks are literally so creative.
I have always smiled when taking my passport and id photos and they’re pretty chill abt it 🤷🏻♀️
Guess you got a fake one ...
nah i smiled in mine too
