- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- We recently purchased a collection of heritage synthesizers from iconic 80's band Tears For Fears. Our Music Tribe UK Care team begin repairing the Prophet 5 in a quest to bring this piece of musical history back to life.
This gent really knows his vintage synths .. lovely to watch a master of his trade at work
Synth restorations are so satisfying.
You should check out Syntaur's series Synth Wizards
@@charizmawolf6490 Nice, thanks!
@@kemek3000 Also Synth Chaser, his videos are very long and detailed. Markus Fuller has a great channel too.
I'm an 80s lover, partly due to the fact that i am a 80s kid. So cool to see this, and the technic guy doing all this testing, props for that, mister!
This is incredible to watch. Not just do you have to know the electrical engineering side, but also the musical side, in order to properly serve this instrument. This has been a pleasure to watch, Behringer!
Behringer team did a great job with respect for analogue synths. Go on, some day behringer will be the best synth brand!!🎹🎹
To become the best brand they'll have to start making their own classics instead of copying ;)
Maybe "most popular" or "most common" but will never be the best brand.... no chance!
nope. never happen
Sounds mystical and unwieldy. Like an old wizard. I love it.
I hope this guy is teaching others, knowledge is lost if it is not passed on
The patience and skill shown here is amazing, what absolute genius folks these are, thanks for sharing such an interesting video.
It has almost a church organ like quality to it. So nice to see it restored.
Now that is what a synth demo should sound like. :)
Nice work bringing that classic back to life.
Great, bit of Gary Numan's M.E. @ 9.19 and Wembley Farewell/she's got claws intro @ 10!
Very nice work! I do so hope Behringer intends on doing a P5 clone. I’ll be an early customer.
Beautiful, and what a noble project. Behringer is doing such extraordinary things.
What a gnarly soldering iron!! Nice work.
Very satisfying! This also made me think of my dad, soldering all the oscillator boards and bending all the keyboard spring wires for the organ he was building when I was a teenager
That's the reason for loving "old gear": it can be repaired :)
Amen brother. As a sound tech I am often repairing older equipment. The parts can still be found and the thrill of the finished product is beyond measure.
Well done. Very nice work for the doctor of the old synthetisers. ;)
Sounds great , very cool !
Great example of why the prophet 5 is so amazing and thick.
Inspiring! I have a polysix and a oberheim 6r that need this attention. I had both working for a while, but vintage gear is always a time bomb...
this man is doing the job of my life
I love this recording. This is exactly what expert engineer must be.
Lovely to see and hear this back in action - hope it won't become a museum piece though - well done for getting it up and running. Love that your keys player at the end is into Numan and Japan :-)
Very nice video, interesting, thanks for sharing:)
Great work guys… But you’re mistaken by saying your model is only 40 presets! You have in fact got a 120 preset version there. When you held the bank button down and pressed patch two, you should’ve noticed the decimal dot come between the 1 and 2... this in fact shows you you are in the second bank of 40 presets. By holding the bank button down and pressing 1, 2, or 3... you switch between the 3 banks of 40 memories.... Hope this helps?
That's damn useful to know.
I know nothing about synths but found this fascinating just the same!!!
Fascinating to see some of the work involved to revive this classic synth.
Great to see these instruments getting some love
I'm very impressed by your skill and knowledge. Well done.
Bringing it back to life! Great job! Congrats!!!
Wow! had their first album, one of my best friends who played keys for Reba McIntyre had a Prophet 5 & a DX7, we grew up listening to a lot of music that came from Sequential Circuits. Great video.(RIP Joey Cigainero).
Aw this is beautiful :) hope all Prophet repairs get this much attention. Great job
Enjoyed this a lot! Thanks for putting the effort.
A-fucking-mazing! That sound though - so evocative and ethereal. Shocking how different the Arturia emulation is. It makes you really appreciate the real thing.
Just got an actual analogue hard ware synth....there are only a couple of soft synths that I'll even bother with now (U-He). Arturia looks nice, but doesn't make the cut.
I owned a Prophet ten for 21 years. Essentially the Prophet ten is two prophet fives with a sequencer. The Arturia one is very very close.
The alien sound he is using towards the end of the video is the one sound I noticed was the most different from the Arturia soft synth and my Prophet Ten. This one sound was the most off. Most of the other sounds are very close.
@@scottfelsen - Did you sell it? If so - why?
@@NeuronalAxon I sold it for a ton of money. I am not a keyboard player. I do play keyboards but I am mainly a guitar and bass player. I wasn't using it. I was tired of the 1600.00 bucks it cost every 5 years to keep it working perfectly. I used the money to pay off some debt. Once it was gone, of course I missed it terribly. So I bought the Arturia V Collection and have upgraded it ever since. Wow. Amazing program. I bought Omnisphere and must say it's the greatest synth I have ever owned. I bought the Korg Legacy collection and was blown away. I bought a soft synth called the OPX Pro2 that is an amazing reproduction of the OBX Synth plus Native Instruments Komplete Libraries. Now I have way more than a Prophet Ten, although I do miss it... I don't believe, in a mix, you can tell the difference between a real analog synth and a software synth. The hardware synths tend to need electronics work but as long as your computer boots up your software is ready to go. I don't play out live anymore plus I still have one old korg synth if I had to do something live. Anyway I am a guitar and bass player so... lol I hope this makes sense. Mostly I am recording now...
Japan - Burning Bridges @11:55
Correct well spotted - my little tribute :)
I really like that background piece in these videos that's almost, but not quite...
It has a very nice distant familiarity to it. I'd love to hear the whole track by itself if you guys would ever release it.
Neo Te Aika
I blieve, itz alternative version of EVERYBODY WANTZ 2 RULE THE WORLD, by Tearz 4 Fearz.
Fascinating! Great job.
Great job! Congratulations!!
awww that 1970 / 1980s synth. Love it!!!
Actually, 1970s, because it's date is 1978.
Mesmerizing.... This brings me so much joy.....
Amazing.i'm all for people restoring old synth's.
simply beautiful! dave smith would gush with pride. good on you!
while with intel corp, funded dave's seer systems company and built synthesizers for the x86. he's the greatest guy: humble, curious, mentoring, and he skis the snow off of every mountain he sees. irreplaceable in this industry--his generation's john chowning--an engineer par excellence. thanks for the T4F gear video--major fan boy.
Marvellous job!
Wish we could have a Behringer Prophet 5 clone :P
One Dark Martian looks very much like they’re taking notes. So it wouldn’t be impossible.
They already have working pro-one, all is needed now is polyphony. So I guess we will see Behringer Priest 5 and Priest 10 soon. ;-)
One Dark Martian Will be nice if we can see also a remake of an OBERHEIM :)
@@eaglechildkeys they have finished the Ub Xa
@@DestroyER82 Priestess 10, let's not waste time on a 5-voice poly ;)
Something happened, now I'm head over heels ... for that thick ass Prophet 5 sound
Impressive restoration project! :)
Oh I see you prefer the M32 as Mixer in your office :-) Great gear and greater work on the old Synthjuwel thanks for sharing
Music Tribe CARE (where the synth was repaired) represents all Music Tribe brands ;)
BEHRINGER Ha ha thats more than right .... You have a ton of great gear I startet with a X32 an I have now a M32 - both great mixers speacial for the price :-) You do a great job !!
Very good this video!
lovely synth
It's come a long way since part one, great work.
I'm fascinated, thank's for the insight. You guys are doin a great job.
9:19 ”Where’s your head at” 😄
I hear M.E. by Gary Numan, the source of the Jaxx sample. Both great songs 👏
Sound + Sound There you go! 👏🏻👏🏻
This is so fascinating. Thx for posting it.
gotta love the comb over
Very nice voice specific troubleshooting lesson!
I heard Behringer are working on an EMS Synthi 100 clone ;-)
Awesome... move videos like this
I used to repair the electronics on the goalkeeper and such so you have got have the! most wonderfull job of all!!! repair this kind off lovely instruments
Sooo cool!! Thanks for sharing ♥️🎹
Amazing sounds!
This man is the real deal !!
Dear Sir
Thank you very much for this video :)
However I can’t recognize any sound of TFF. I’am really into vintage synths but I think what made them great is all about the effects added and the mixing (production). Harmonizers, chorus,...
I wish I could have some explains about them
Dear Behringer : Make a Prophet 5 clone, make it sound more like the Prophet 5 than the Prophet 6 does, give it 8 voice polyphony, more preset storage, some TC Electronic FX as a bonus and ............ I`ll buy one to go with my other main Synths : Deepmind 12D, Nord Electro 6 & DSI Prophet rev 2 ...... thankyou and goodnight
Prophet 5 and 8 voice polyphony? Does not make any sense
@@filkry8832 The new prophet 08 rev2 has 8 voice polyphony and sounds just like the prophet-5. I think that's what he's getting at. However, I think Sequential might get upset if behringer makes a clone of a brand new synth.
nuts
+ The ability to store presets
I wouldn't be surprised if they performed with complete backing tracks.
nice job . and glad to Hear Japan song....Burning Bridges! Fine. but... in the song I hear OB sound...... lol....
It would have been cool if the battery was alive and the TFF user sounds were still in memory. I used to own Chick Corea's OBXa and his presets were still in the memory bank.. pretty cool
No. Fucking. Way! Pls tell me you saved them..
9:18 Gary Numan - M.E.
10:00 Gary Numan - She's got claws
11:57 Japan - Burning bridges
Interesting ;-)
Plus an attempt at a Schubert trio.
It would have been more efficient to play something off of dance!
@@mickeythompson9537 Correct :)
Perfect!
It IS still an amazing Synth!
Very cool video , be great if you could upload the background music as a seperate video
I would love to find this keyboard in some TFF live concert footage but, I suspect this historical instrument was strictly for the studio.
the synth was used during The Hurting tour. The keyboardist next to Curt's side of the stage was using it
@@jeffcappelletti1986 Oh, Ian Stanley?
Ian had the Jupiter 8 and P.P.G. Wave. The other keyboardist that had eyeglasses on had the Prophet5 and an Emulator 1
These guys are good! I wish I could solder like that...
Bro, soldering is very easy. IMHO any synth owner should know basic electronics, how to fix electronics and how to solder. Don't pay some technician a lot of cash just for simple stuff you can fix yourself easily. I can recommend you the following books:
- Make: Electronics: Learning Through Discovery (2nd Edition) by Charles Platt
- Electronic Circuits for the Evil Genius (2nd edition) by Dave Cutcher
- Practical Electronics for Inventors (4th edition) by Paul Scherz
- How to Diagnose and Fix Everything Electronic (2nd edition) by Michael Jay Geier
The best books you'll ever need if you're a hobbyist. You can get these books for "free" if you know what I mean ;)
sampled! I thank you ;-) very interesting
SANSKRIT On the pcb’s ground plane inside a Sequential Circuits synth?! I’m gonna have to buy some Squential gear and look deeper into that. THANKS for sharing!
Oh, you hit several star trek the original series sounds there. Hehe.
excellent series ! bravo
Excellent
What a beast...
11:57 : ‘Burning Bridges’ - Japan
You got it.
Correct - my little tribute to the Prophet 5 masters :)
Bit of Gary numan played there..
Very nice work!
I actually wonder what Behringer could do if they did what they with the Deepmind vs Juno with a Prophet-5. It would be epic. The Deepmind is such a good versatile synth, especially for a first attempt.
I wonder if Roland Orzabal would like to come and play with his old synth.
god i wish i knew how to do things like this so cool
very interesting. would like to see more restauration videos.
why not fit a battery carrier ? so you can swap out batteries ?!
Ignorance to their existence is the only excuse acceptable, but I doubt it........unless its because he wants to wait until he has the proper battery for it to put in a holder.
I guess maybe one reason could be that it won't work with standard 1.5 V AA/AAA or 9 V block batteries, but some special battery is required here. I also think its a buffer battery for that the presets won't disappear, once the device is disconnected from wall power. You need to replace those kind of batteries only very rarely, so a battery carrier isn't really necessary.
@@whoozl3540 special batteries have holders as well
Well normal batteries are going to leak and cause damage at some point. Also the battery probably will last for 10 years or more once replaced
@@Johnsormani 10 years goes by like lightning
12:34 sounds like something from Jean michel jarre
What cover of “tears for fears - everybody wants the rule the world” is it in the background!?
Thanks! Is the backing track available to listen elsewhere?
I want to know this too!
kozepz
LOVE Tearz 4 Fearz!!!
What's next Tears for Fears Video? I waiting for that!
How do I learn how to do that? would I need classes or could I learn that on my own by buying the right books? What a skill you’ve mastered 👍👨🎓
It'd be a crime to take apart one of these normally but looks like you know what you're doing ;D
So much Gary Numan in those sounds
Amazing.. what a fun synth! Wouldn't it be something if Behringer decided to put something just like it on the market? Like maybe a polyphic pro 1? ;)
So... Can we expect a Bro-24 with the same Mod Matrix and Fx as the DM12?
@@SPAZZOID100 the menu system on the dm is childsplay. Everything is arranged by the click of a Edit button underneath each of the DM sections. Easy, fast, no fooling around
Behringer, Please Please Please make this full size. Metal and wood. 5 Octaves. And a proper look to the original with some built in effects. This would be a solid hit.
Awesome.
Tears4fears was such a successful band, I can't barely understand how these synths could get so much damaged !!!!!
Take them on long worldwide tours and see what happens.
penzman I actually world as à Touring musician ( not wolrdwide though )... Flight cases, truckpacks, roadies... they have always existed you know...
