I rode this many, many times when I was young, and never had any complaints whatsoever. I would love some newer coasters to have a first drop like this!!
Yeah, the Thriller at the time was a rather unique and ground breaking ride with very unusual circular loops pulling up to 6.5 g. The typical Schwarzkopf loop frame that you are referring to was the box beam frame. That construction particularly lent itself to the modest sized flat vertical loops that you saw on most Schwarzkopf rides but these large flat loops and smaller corkscrewing loops I guess where better formed by curving standard track and propping it as necessary.
Not entirely sure, I seem to recall filming the ride in 1996 and think Steve may have got the date wrong. However, I do know this footage is of the ride operating at its last ever German fair before it was shipped off to Astroworld in Texas. In fact I met the guy from Six Flags at the fair who had come to acquire the ride.
@@Jokkkke Rode this when it was built up outside Gröna Lund in Stockholm, Sweden one summer, and I can absolutely confirm that the last loop was pretty awful! If you didn't press your head back towards the headrest - and I do mean press! - the start of the loop would jerk you forward, and those G's would then push on your head, neck and back harder than you would think humanly possible. I didn't come away from it with permanent damage or anything, but it wasn't comfortable at all, and there was NO WAY that I was gonna ride it a second time!
@@isaacsweeney3915 I only got to ride it twice so I don't really remember too much about it. It did have a little bit of rattle though, the restraints that were added were bulky and the train was super tight to get into...
Rode this at Astroworld and I can still remember the restraints smashing down on my shoulders on the second loop. I spent the rest of the ride scrunched down in my seat probably with my back bent.
- Oscar Bruch/Anton Schwarzkopf's modern equivalent to Harry Traver's classic "Crystal Beach Cyclone" - the two have so much in common both in terms of crazy first drop, and notorious g-forces/trick-tracks
the headlines in Aftonbladet about people getting sent to hospital with whiplash injuries made it seem even more thrilling and awesome - It was definitely a badge of honour if you went on this ride!
Where's the line between a vertical loop and a corkscrew, and where does that final inversion stand with that extra wide spacing and wonky exit? Pretty sure it's considered a vertical loop, but man that is one odd "loop."
Insane how the footage isn't even sped up. That mad genius Schwarzkopf took the conventional wisdom that you need shoulder harnesses for inversions, and that loops must be teardrop-shaped, and turned them both quite literally on their head - albeit not on the same ride.
***** What, how dare you be so presumptuous. I have ridden Olympia Looping back in 1986 at the Oktoberfest the first year it opened. To be honest both Thriller and Olympia are both very good and equally intense rides. I prefer Thrillers first steeper drop though.
***** Steve you need to get some vintage Roller Coaster Magazine's out because you will find proof in there that I've ridden Olympia Looping as my on ride photos displayed in that Magazine will demonstrate. You will also find those photos in a later 1st Drop magazine dedicated to Schwarzkopf.
Andrew Marshall I beg your pardon it was actually 1989 when I rode the Olympia Looping three years after I went to Thriller official opening in Dusseldorf.
Well, that certainly rattled his cage !! Lol :-) They don't call him Anton for nothing. But the really good thing to come out of this is that we could have some early footage of Olympia Looping on the way, what say you Anton ? :-)
I have a laughing and the crying eye about that since it hurt my back when I rode it in 1986. It's sad to see Schwarzkopf's maybe greatest work of genius dismantled, but the 6.5 G circular loops are a mistake and are not safe for everyone. I wish they would find a way to keep all the good elements (like the original first drop and the overall feel of the layout) while making it a safe ride.
I from Finland, and i knew this ride also have been short time in Sweden Stockholm gröna lund. Sadly so close, but i this time little boy. Because removing elsewhere season 1991.
I know ive been on thriller on a Fairground in Berlin Germany in 1995 and the colour scheme at this time was blue tracks except the inversions and white supports. So i guess are right that these images must be recorded later
Yes, you are right the back seats were closed off because the g forces were considered too intense for public consumption. I took this film in 1997 at the last German fair that the ride ever operated at before it went to America and while we were there the operators allowed us one ride each in the back seat which was awesome. Needless to say I rode the back seat when the ride first opened in 1986 and then it was running furiously on a hot day with five trains in action. Sorry about the date mix up above I've finally got my facts straight on when I took this video.
So did the engineers and designers not know how intense it was? I'm confused. Didn't it go thru testing before opening to the public? I'm sure they would have known then.
Anthony Martinez This ride was designed by Werner Stengel’s engineering firm. They were legends in the business and knew exactly what they were doing and exactly how intense it was, they were trying to create the most intense ride on earth. It wasn’t enough to truly hurt anyone seriously, but over the years it proved to be too much discomfort for many riders and different venues might have made adjustments like closing off cars or even eventually changing the layout to avoid trouble with patrons. It’s possible too that adjustments were due to engineers starting to see unforeseen stress on the track and structure, not an uncommon problem on the more intense coasters that were designed to be portable, even with a solid firm behind them.
wow... this even has POVs in it (9:27) -- how come I have never come acros this so far. the worst part for me was the enrance to loop 4 - I rode it only once but I remember my neck feeling weird for over a week afterwards. I rode it at the very beginning it was still painted red, and I remember reading news articles about doctors tracing back spine injuries to this coaster - then they changed some of the track, which is when the more colorful version happened - it might have been OK for some, but the G-forces on this ride were simply too strong. I am glad it doesn't operate anymore.
The only reason I am here was because my cousin said 24 people died on a loop on a ride called thriller. But I know it’s probably mis info she got since this would have a report about it.
Die Bahn wäre ja fast wieder nach Deutschland in den Skyline-Park gekommen... leider haben die in den USA das Baubuch verschlampt, weshalb es wohl neu gemacht hätte werden müssen, was zu teuer geworden wäre. Schade, Schade... :(

Schade dass es die nicht mehr gibt
Those first two loops must be VERY intense ....
They sure do look like it!

Wow! Wunderbar, eines schones video :)
looks insane!
Your Lucky, I didn't get chance to ride it at all. Anton managed the footage on this one ! :(
RIP man 😢
Hello IT was my absolut Favorit rollercoaster for ever. Long time ago. IT comes never back.

Thriller did not have shoulder harnesses in the first couple of months.
Thank you, I'll look forward to seeing yours ! :)
Wasn't this located at Gröna Lund in Stockholm in 1996?
Where did you hear that from?
I don't know if it will ever reopen
glad you enjoyed it ! :)
die bahn ist so krass das die letzten zwei sitze nicht besetzt werden dürfen..zu hohe g kräfte
How many g force have the coaster in the last row ?
Wie viele g kräfte hat die Achterbahn in der letzten Reihe?
About 6.5
I rode it at astroworld but never in the back. And it absolutely was insane in the middle so that says something😂
Skyline Park 2015, Here we Come ! :-)
Oh right, thank you for sharing this good news with us.
When and where and are they going to put the loops back the way they originally were?
Excellent video...thanks !
Best 1986 roller coaster

Looping Roller Coaster 1 looks too intense for me!
Now the real question is.. what’s more intense? Mindbender or Thriller?
Skyline Park in southern Germany has bought it from Mexico. Annoucement says 2015. thats all i know atm.

You are right
These images has been made in Hamburg on the Fairground called Hamburger Dom btw.
It looks like they closed off the rear cars here. I know some fairs did that because of the monstrous G forces.
I think some of the ride is filmed from the back car and I don't remember seeing any seats closed off before at German Fairs.
