In June, the 40th Anniversary of the first series of Black Adder, the Royal Mail is issuing a set of commemorative postage stamps featuring many characters from the various series.

@@ingoatwetrust8086 People have been collecting postage stamps for decades. I've always thought FDCs to be rather lovely and very affordable collectables, tbh. They make people smile...

FYI: anyone wanting a Blackadder FDC set needs to buy them this Wed 17th May only.
Postmarked *Cunningsborough;* frank reads: _"I have a cunning plan."_ 😆
Sadly no sign of Flasheart on any of the stamps though... Woof!

Yes, 'Hun' is slang for German at this time. I think it comes from a speech the Kaiser had made some years previously in which he compared the military might of Germany to that of Huns against the Roman Empire, a comparison that rather backfired when, for the Allies 'Hun' came to stand for German brutality and barbarism.

Probably my favourite series of my favourite show. Ever. Watched it over and over and it still makes me laugh out loud. The running ‘Darling’ joke might be one of the best ever written.

Howard Goodall's theme is a masterful piece - the "March of The Grenadiers' segues into the Blackadder theme seamlessly.

Connor, bless you, I don't think you actually 'get' it. This is truly masterful writing and mastery of all the range of British humour- it can be both be very subtle and very broad. But, yes, do please continue; your reaction is always worth watching.

It was definitely a darker humour, but with a hidden anti-war message. During the first World War there was a notion of the army being "Lions led by Donkeys"
The theme tune is slightly different to the usual theme, it's a mix of the traditional Grenadiers March and the Blackadder theme.

    • @finncullen
      @finncullen Рік тому +6

The anti-war message is not exactly hidden, it's front and centre. In fact as Captain Blackadder might say "It's about as well hidden as Colonel Albert "Whitey" Beaner, the albino artilleryman from Aberystwyth was he tried to hide in the front line of the zulu horde attacking Rorkes Drift"

I think if you watch black adder in this series you'll see a dirt if way of understanding depression and anxiety. The fact he says stuff like his resignation and suicide would be a strat... And if course melchett hears what he wants to hear... Kinda like children political parties and activists.

when German soldiers were sent to assist in the relief of the European diplomats and their families, besieged in peking during the boxer rebellion at the start of the 20th century, they were told by kaiser wilhelm II to behave "like the Huns of old".

My thoughts exactly... Connor is NOT listening to the comments or, is just ignoring them completely!? He SAYS "I read the comments..." - But doesn't appear to actually care what they say??? He FIRST watched 'Best of' snippets of shows, was told DON'T! (He was recommended "Please watch a whole episode, to appreciate the comedic 'build-up' etc".) - He followed the advice..
So he then started Blackadder S1, and seemed to appreciate it - DUH! Stopped, then started a completely new series, without finishing the FIRST - WTF!? He even 'jumped' into S2, but now is in S4... WHY??? Sorry, but he is losing subs due to his lack of consistency... SMH

Yes, the Huns were an asiatic barbarian horde who overran the Western Roman Empire during the reign of Emperor Valentinian III. Their leader, Attila the Hun, was finally defeated by Roman General Flavius Aetius in 451 A.D. In a battle of epic proportions, in the Catalaunian Plains (modern day France) a combined army of Roman and Germanic men (Visigoths) defended Europe against the nomadic hordes of the east.
It is considered a civilizing moment in history. Yes the Germans would eventually topple Rome but they would no longer seek to destroy Roman Civilization. They would emulate it and claim it as their own. The Germans had been civilized. Europe had matured.
During WW1 the word Hun was typically used by the British press as a slander against the Germans. Portraying the image that the Germans wanted to destroy civilization and the British would protect it.

You can compare the use of the word “hun” at the time, to the use of modern propaganda terms like “racist”, “nazi” or “extremist”. Remember, “nazi” was’nt a word yet in 1914, so they had to come up with something clever.
It goes to show how little we have evolved as a species in the last 100 years.

This is simply not worth watching. You’ve managed to block out the majority of the video with these ridiculous overlays. How come other people can deal with it by other means which do not ruin the picture but you cannot be bothered. A waste of time
