    Theaters really protect movie companies. Because if a person doesn’t want to pay for a stream of something, they will just google the name and the words free online. Theaters give them some exclusivity window before people can watch it at a decent quality.

      It’s not just AMC; it’s the vast majority of movie theaters in the country. It’s been nearly impossible for movies with budgets in the hundreds of millions to be profitable without a theatrical release. Keep in mind that AMC is as much in the business of selling popcorn as it is making a fraction of the box office revenue which studios keep a lot of. The only reason why you have big movies to watch on Netflix is because they made money during their theatrical release. Otherwise, you’d be paying $20 dollars for every single movie you stream. If people are ok with paying that much to stream a movie at home, then AMC will fail, but it’s not like it can be priced extremely low like most streaming services.

    • @timf7413
      @timf7413 4 роки тому +4

      That's debatable. Most modern blocbusters (even successful ones) don't make all that much, if any, profit (on an ROI basis) during their initial theatrical runs and increasingly make money on a slower, but much longer curve after their theatrical runs are over. When coupled with the fact that streaming services such as Netflix are now producing original films with budgets every bit as large as major theatrical releases, it's very much an open question just how much value exclusive theatrical distribution really provides to the industry as a whole.
      Further, even at something like a $20.00 price point, that's still around the price of two theatrical tickets (at the approximate national average), many consumers are still coming out ahead in such a scenario.

    • @MattSezer
      @MattSezer 4 роки тому

      Tim F I’m not saying that a modern blockbuster could return a profit just on a theatrical release alone, but virtually every blockbuster has needed a theatrical release to get them there. It’s normally something like 60% of the revenue. Netflix has had negative cash flow since 2011 and a lot of their high-budget original films are designed more as marketing tools to gain more subscribers rather than sustainable ventures possible under their normal recurring subscription revenue. That being said, if people are willing to pay around $20 for a movie and they come ahead with that, then it’ll work. Just don’t think that studios are going to spend $100+ million on several movies a month when people are only paying $10 for an unlimited streaming subscription.

    • @timf7413
      @timf7413 4 роки тому

      Over what span of time though? The back end profits of most movies via home media and other channels last for years, if not decades. The numbers may not be as flashy as the box office take, but often they work out to a substantial amount in the end in many cases.

    I have always loved going to the theater for the same reason I love films themselves - it's an opportunity to be immersed in a story. I am told, very sternly, to not check my cell phone. There are no distractions. There's no pausing. It's the chance to be transported for 90-120 minutes. Obviously I understand that a lot of people out there just want quick entertainment, but I agree with the conclusion that there will ALWAYS be a demand for the box office.

People literally pay a premium to actually go have an experience at the theaters for these sorts of things and when you're saying, "oh they're going to go straight to digital platform" versus watching at a theater you'll be surprised what you are going to see when they do resist. This video is misleading af. Amc didn't threaten to boycott all universal movies because of trolls world tour. In fact, Amc did so because the NBCuniv CEO stated that in the future, they'd release movies theatrically and on VOD simultaneously. That fundamentally goes against the agreements that a theatre and a studio have. In addition, NATO was fine with studios releasing some new content on VOD because they knew the situation and worked with the other studios. Universal notified the theatres at the last minute and didn't even include the theatres in the discussion, which is not okay.

    It's true that OTT platforms provide us convenience and privacy when watching a title but movie theatres with giant screens of IMAX, sound enhancing technologies such as DOLBY, availability of refreshments at intervals and finally the experience of sitting along side hundreds to laugh, cry, fear, getting excited is altogether an unique experience. 1917 was one such example which was made to be seen in a cinema hall.

Art House films rely on awards season for income, and cable channels and streaming services have been a money maker for those films since they don't get wide releases either. I remember watching Back to the Future at AMC in 2010. 25yo Universal movie. They charged full price, then while the projector was on, pulled up Direct TV and streamed it On Demand. In other words, it was something you could have done for free, if not a few dollars pay per view. I don’t know what deal they had with Universal, as they did have a special event going on for the 25th, with merch giveaways and trivia... ...but I’m pretty sure Universal is suppose to get some revenue still on each ticket.

    Here's the reality:
    Studios haven't needed to release films in theaters in the 21st Century not just because of cable but DVD and streaming services.
    Financially what used to be the residual secondary markets for films can now become the primary one. Trolls has just demonstrated that you can do PVOD at home release and make enough revenues to justify such a release.

      It will probably happen to Blockbusters last, but I think it's the inevitable direction everything will go eventually. Netflix is already producing original films with budgets to rival any blockbuster.

    We rarely go to the theater. Cheaper to rent the film or get it FREE from the library in 3 months. The exception would be something I'm dying to see, or have acted in. THEN, we will go and see it at a matinee or budget film house.

    People go to movies because they are loud and the theaters smell like buttered popcorn. Speaking of which, movie theaters make most of their revenue from selling $12 buckets of that popcorn.

    I feel the majority of people are okay with watching movies on their TV at home or tablet. The care about good audio video disappeared when we had our first recession and people gave up on expensive home theater systems and were content with a sound bar.

    Worst year since 1997? My family went to the movie theater at least once a week! Heck, one neighboring town had, at one time, 4 active movie theaters! (7 if you count the closed ones). And we’re talking large multiplexes here. Not some one or two screen theater! We would go to the matinees due to the cheaper prices, but also to be able to find a good seat, as evening showings of new releases would sell out!

    Going to movies in a fun experience, in Vancouver their are V.I.P rooms where you pay more for more exclusive seating in comfy leather chairs. Usually only 20-40 seats in a theatre with lots of space and food and alcoholic beverages are brought to you, I quite enjoy it.

    Maybe if theaters didn’t charge $21.89 for a small popcorn they wouldn’t be in the position they are in. I love the movie theater experience but they take advantage of consumers IMO.

    • @timf7413
      @timf7413 4 роки тому

      That's largely due to the overhead involved in operating a theater though, which is a huge part of the problem. No matter what they do, running a massive physical location just isn't particularly economically competitive any longer when compared with many of the alternative options for getting content out to viewers.

    A room full of strangers where there might be a baby crying or somebody on their phone all kinds of other distractions has never seemed like a really great place to watch a movie but at home on the right TV for twenty bucks it's amazing so I hope AMC in the other theaters fall to the level of novelty like the drive-in

( I know the world is more expensive now, but I also know when can take my brother to the movies at their competition for the same price for both tickets that would be for one there that just crazy. )

    Movie places will reopen with limits to start when they are allowed to do so. at some point later they may not get the big hits if this virus keeps spreading and keeping places closed for safety. so studios will at some point send movies to stream cause will get tired of delaying movies cause the virus and places closed. time will tell what gonna happen later.

    Lately, I've been plagued by big hair women sitting right in front of me or a rowdy group right behind me. The worst is bringing young children who can't sit still for 5 minutes and talk and Yammer. Last movie I saw at the theater was the jungle book. I'm like the other dude here. Yify torrents or just a Google search for not so popular movies. VPN? $7/month.

    I haven’t been to a movie theater in years and I do so love the old-fashioned movie going experience...but...the behavior of most folks is beyond reprehensible in theaters. So, I had a local company (a big thank you to ListenUp) install a home theater in the basement and I never looked back. (Yes, talkin’ about you, people who bring infants to movie theaters.) And, did I understand that a 48-hour, one time rental of “Trolls” was $20? $20!

    Technology is bringing what the consumer wants at a lower price. Movie tickets are already expensive and renting a $20 movie to watch with my family at home (where we can have our own food and drinks) is cheaper and more convenient. Most people want to watch new movies, not new movies at theaters. That said, movies theaters will always have their place. It is fun to go watch your favorite "movie universe" in IMAX and get that experience. Just won't happen as much as it used to.
