I've started to understand navy in hoi4. Tldr spam destroyers, minmax the highest possible light attack in cruisers and just a few strong heavy attack capitals. Get a 1:5 ratio of screens to capital, with destroyers as meat shields, cruisers as destroyer killers and capital ships as cruiser killers. Destroyers should focus on torpedoes since they cant get any wortwhile light attack. Or just spam them with just 1 gun. Torpedoes distract screens and deal massive blows to cruisers and capitals if they get through. Cruisers can output the best light attack and are well protected to deal with other screens. Build a couple with max seaplane recon slots for max spotting. They can also serve as lighter capital ships but ideally get battleships for that. Battleships or battlecruisers shred any cruiser or destroyer 1 on 1 but are vulnerable to massed attacks and their cost make them a liability. Battlecruisers are built for speed so they can run from danger but why run if you can win. Anyway reserve them for battles against other capital ships, you can deal tiny blows sinking fleets piecemeal but damaged battleships take months to repair and youll miss the real battle. Carriers ignore all this and their bombers straight deal rng blanket damage on all ships engaged at sea, but as with battleships, have a lot of screens with them because they have no defenses. Preferably you also get some land air support to do maritime recon for spotting and naval bombings to get cheeky hits in.

Bismarck class always were cruisers. It was their way of evading the stipulations on max size, had they been SHB’s they would immediately be flagged. The development produced two blueprints; one to pass the board, one with ‘aftermarket adjustments’; the adjustment being heavy guns. I think they were actually retrofitted. I play balanced most of the time, and I have to say that destroyers tend to be useless. I just build a general purpose light cruiser that is capable of attacking submarines if needed, and the same cruisers also command partol fleets (2 cruisers, 10 destroyers) and protect heavy ships (3 light cruiser for each heavy, and then the rest are destroyers) and it works better than relying mostly on destroyers for screening and patrolling.
@@Curtwhogameshey for some real advise a navy fleet of mostly destroyers and subs can beat the hell out of the UK, you mostly need to destroyers to just kill enemy subs other than that getting 1940 subs asap even if it’s over 500 days is worth it
