Some people here criticize Donggook parenting style like bzzz he has 5 children and they are all growing up fine, well mannered, sweet, and polite. He knows what he is doing. And yes I disagree with Donggook's "boys don't cry", but I understand. He came from old generation and different culture. It's not like he intended to make Daebak can't express his emotion haha
he purposely makes sian cry (by teasing etc) because he's worried that he is bottled up due to his emotionless face nowadays. he said it once in an interview. he is in no way encouraging his son to bottle up his emotions but only said that quote to try to stop him from crying over fake insects.
I think it's good he's making sure he will survive as a guy in South Korea, I think he specially worries because he's surrounded by girls growing up. I remember an anecdote of a guy that accidentally never taught his kid how to lie well because he wanted his kid to grow up honest. And that kid's life was in shambles as a teen because it was really obvious when he was lying (because his parents always played dumb when he lied badly as a kid that he never adapted it). So we all have good intentions, but we have to consider what would be best for the child to survive.
Donggook is such a fun dad. seriously these kids are so lucky to have him as their dad. he knows what his kids likes and dislikes. i know there are things that he has said we all dont agree on and instead of arguing and say bad things to him, lets take that as an example to us so that in the future we know what to say and not to our kids :) this show is so pure so lets spread positivity ok :) ps: if u trying to say Donggook dont know how to raise his kids, just look at his oldest twins Jaesi and Jaeah.
"you're scared of bugs when you're way bigger than the bug , the bug should be scared of you" Exactly my parents to me when I ask them to help getting rid of the bug
So many people trying to say that "Boys dont cry" is wrong. i think he just wants Sian to think that crying won't solve anything. Of course you will cry, thats in our nature. But "boys don't cry" doesn't literally mean don't cry forever. It means do something since you're a man. He wanted Sian to grow stronger since he's the only boy in the siblings. He's living with 4 girls.
This is actually a form of behavioural therapy called systematic desensitization used for phobias and anxiety I love how he used it in the this situation 👍👍👍
Its just too cute everytime their dad teases Daebak. Good thing he's not being criticised for being playful. Its more of cos Daebaks is his only son so he wants him to be brave for his sisters.
I can see in the future, Daebak will pranks his appa more than his appa did to him kkk~ But i can also see that their bond is stronger than anything else.
I really like Donggook's way to raise his kids, saying to Sian "boy don't cry" means crying is not always the solution, you should sometimes be brave enough to face your fear, also Sian is the only boy in the family so I think it's nice Donggook tries to make him feel manly. It's good for young boys like that to feel "strong to protect girls" it's good for their self esteem! I think he's a good father, and I can tell you Sian became very brave, energetic and sometimes prank his father too haha
I see a lot of commenters filleting the dad for saying “Boys don’t cry” and I can’t deny that I don’t support or endorse this motto myself BUT to be fair, although he’s never used the exact words, he has said similar things to his daughters in the past. I remember one episode vividly in which he (much like this scene) roasts Sua for being afraid of generally menial things. He’s also scolded Jaea (one of his older daughters) for crying after losing a match to him (he doesn’t support the idea of holding back against a child). I think he’s a good father who is invested in teaching his kids how to be strong and toughen up. And though a part of me feels like if he’s gonna go the whole “boys don’t cry” route that he should instill the same motto in his daughters (Sua and Seola were tearing up due to fear however the dad does not admonish them for it) however tho he’s never used the exact words, to some extent he does similarly push his daughters not to be overly emotional about small trivial things (which is good:))
He just want sian to overcome sian scared as u can see at the end of the video sian become more brave then before. Dont take everything in negative way..
why just most of the comments here are about complaining as being a dad he is just trying to overcome his sons fear... coz he wants to make his son brave... i know its wrong to say man doesn't cry but there is also a subtitle boys like you shouldn't cry theirs a different meaning in these two sentence lets not question on how he is bearing his child.. and really m happy that sian overcome his fear.
It’s so sad to see such horrible beliefs being wired into such a nice boy. It’s going to be hard to get rid of them and finally be happy when he’s older. Please don’t do such things to your children. “You can cry, but afterwards try to improve your situation” is what Sian needed to hear. Im sorry thins is happening to you Sian.
after they left i rewatch their vids again :') it's funny to see how appa always teased Sian 😂 now when he grew up he become more fearless I'm so proud

Y’all relax, the message behind “boys dont cry” is to teach them to be brave and to motivate him to overcome his fear. The meaning behind it may be rather crude if you think about it but to a child, they may not think so much about it. It probably wont affect them so much if he says it once or twice. Anyways, in many asian households, parents may tell their kids “boys dont cry” or “big kids dont cry”, but the kids know its to tell them to be brave in trivial matters, so they dont take it so seriously. If my uncle tells my cousin that, he will just fight back, so it doesnt make a big impact either. I get that this isnt the most ideal way to say it but Donggook just wants Sian to overcome his fear of these trivial things, nobody means to tell them they cant cry over something serious like losing a loved one and im sure the kids know it too. I love how Sua and Seola help and take care of their little brother. Its a good thing that Donggook help his kids especially Sian to overcome the fear of insects or bugs. They need to learn this at the age of young so that at this young ages they also learn to more confident, found themselves and be independent. Donggook taught hid kids how to overcome fear and fight it. He is a great father. I really love this sibling.
people are still complaining about "boys don't cry" thing. When people say that, it's a way of comforting. Of course, when bullies use it to make fun of them, that's bullying. Obviously the dad is going to comfort him when he actually cries but at an early stage, the dad is just trying to teach him not to cry over something silly. The dad is such a great father and the kids have great manners and obey their dad. They're not spoiled and they help out each other.
Tbh i can put myself in Sian’s shoes bc i remember going through stuff like that as a kid and being terrified, and i understand the criticism about his parenting... but he knows when it’s going too far and he knows when to stop it and explain... he cares about his kids too and he’s trying to teach them not traumatize them
nothing is wrong with "boys dont cry" as long as the parents or family are always by the kids side and supporting him. its a way of teaching. Dongguk still slowly teach sian to become brave and follow his pace. people should just relax. duhh
The right way to make someone overcome their fear is being patient. Wait until they get older then talk to them over their fears. If you make a kid experience fear early, they will get trauma. Trauma can leave fear of something for a very very very long time. It will take more time to heal from fear if you show them too early.
I think him being an athlete makes him tougher and pushes his childrens limit cause that is how he got to where he is. My dad was very athletic and played football so i can see the similarity. He used to tease me alot and make me cry (i was real sensitive) bt I've realised that it has made me stronger. I got immune to his teasing at some point which im sure will happen to Daebak as well.
There are many people who complain about the things that Donggook teaches their children, but who has 5 beautiful, intelligent and well mannered kids? He or You? Maybe you don't like it, but you can not deny that Donggook (and his wife, of course) are doing an incredible job of raising their children.
