    IDK man, There is something about the delica/endura that just has that second kind of cool. Its just an awesome looking design too me...The cutjack just looks like everything else. Delica is a GOAT for sure.

    Spyderco heat treat on the VG-10 puts it above the OKC D2. By a long shot. D2 also corrodes pretty easily, not a true stainless. The locking mechanism on the RAT 2 is also very weak, had mine a year before it deformed and started to slip. The delica 4 is a laster, if I was betting on my knife breaking from use I’d go with the rat 2 but otherwise delica can take my money because it will take the place of two rat 2s and then some in how durable it is, the thing will never wear out from normal use unlike the other models you show.

      With respect, I've tried the little flipper liner locks. Was not impressed. But there's one other knife that's worth a look because the overall package just...blew my mind. And that's the Rat2 in D2. Very similar in size and weight to the Delica. Bout half the price. Pretty good liner lock as liner locks go--great ergos for the size, good action on washers. Delica is a better knife, no doubt, but for twice the price.

    I just got that exact knife, color and all, for my daughter for Christmas--and it's gotten even more expensive since your video. Still, I'm on the GOAT side. While I don't own one myself, it's a perfect choice for my daughter. She's a lefty, and it's truly ambidextrous. It's also her first knife, aside from some of my cast-offs she's picked up and played with over the years (always let your children play with knives), and the back lock is so beginner friendly. Plus, she'll be using it mostly for snacking, and it is super slicey with that thin stock and full flat grind. In fact, I may have talked myself into wanting one.

    Delica 4 is definitely overpriced today, but it is ridiculous to claim that D2 is a much better knife steel than VG10.

  • @herbertgearing1702

    I've had that knife in that color as my edc go everywhere blade for 5-6 years. The blade has been thinned down nicely so you can't see the Spyderco spider anymore, and she's razor sharp and smooth as silk. Vg10 responds very well to stropping. I've sharpened it maybe a half dozen times over the years and strop it once or twice a week. I have several delicas in other steels, but I wanted to regrind my edc thin and slicey so the vg-10 and a Zdp189 got that treatment because they were the most worn in and inexpensive.

    The only delica I own is a gen 1 I bought in 1990. It doesn't have liners and doesn't need them. Consequently it only weighs 1.8 oz. Probably the main reason the later gens have liners is to have metal to thread the clip screws into. The clip on my gen 1 is molded right into the scales.

    Never obsolete! I own 2. Sabre ground w/serrations, picked up for 25$. And a ZDP-189, what a cutter, super awesome steel.

    I have owner more delicas than any other knife. Maybe equal to pm2’s. Yet the more i sold them off except my ss version and my s30v zome. Something about the delica keeps bringing me back. Your exactly right about the price point. Honestly to compete, they need to drop the price. The delica should be 45 bucks. Thats what i think they are worth. Funny thing is the endura hits a specific niche, due to blade length. I dont mind the price on the endura at all.

    I’ve owned and gotten rid of a number of Delicas. They’ve been in and out of rotation over the years. But for some reason, I always want one around and it gets carried quite a bit. Currently, my flavor of choice is the k390 blade. I do agree, the standard VG10 requires a lot of regular maintenance to keep it the level I want my cutting edge to be.

  • @theplasticdesert2408

    The Delica 4 is priced so high because it has the UA-cam tax on it; pretty much every reviewer makes it out to be a knife you must own and can’t live without. Years later they’re selling them and they’re still being reviewed. In Australia they cost around $85 USD.

  • @georgemorley1029

    Saying a knife is “obsolete” is like saying that fire isn’t as hot as it used to be anymore. This is still a knife at the end of the day. “Obsolete knife” is an oxymoronic statement because cutting implements can’t go “out of date”. Your whole video is revolving around value, not obsolescence. I’d absolutely agree that the value of the object can’t compare with some other knives these days, but if it’s the knife you want, and value doesn’t matter, then it absolutely cannot be “obsolete”. It could only be obsolete if it couldn’t cut anything, which obviously would mean it isn’t actually a knife anymore. If it could only cut butter, it still wouldn’t be obsolete. So your video, although interesting when it comes to value, doesn’t do it for me I’m afraid.

    This being 2018, and the Internet, I must insult and threaten anybody who dares to disagree with me.
    The Delica is the GOAT, and I challenge anybody to a knife fight to settle this matter.
    Srsly tho, the Delica is thin and lightweight, I got an aftermarket deep carry pocket clip so it is less conspicuous in my khakis. It is a vicious little knife of a timeless design. To radically redesign it would be akin to redesigning the 1911. This is a classic and should remain largely unchanged.

    • @SliceyDicey

    *The Japanese have been making the worlds best knives for centuries. When you consider the quality, light weight and ergonomics of the Spyderco Delica... I'll keep buying them, especially the Sprint Runs!*

    • @assoverteakettle
      @assoverteakettle 3 роки тому +2

      True. Unlike the era of 1960's cheap transistor radios, since the 80's Japan have made the most reliable everything - let's face it - and other countries, including the US, try to crack the code of their manufacturing philosophies (e.g. ISO 9001 standards). Seki City is also one of the world's hub for incredible metallurgy and steel manufacturing with a lot of history. Dismissing that is a bit ignorant when it comes to knowing your steels.
      Taiwan and South Korea have closed the gap now I think. I have no issues buying knives, like CRKT, or other things like electronics made in Taiwan. I've found them to be very reliable and well made. China is still hit and miss but some of Spyderco's Chinese made knives, and Ganzo itself, are starting to change my mind. We can't just make sweeping generalizations on where a knife has been made. Benchmade has had quality control issues in the past especially with uncentered blades and rub.
      As for the Delica, it's still a great knife. Sure you can find higher end steels, faster deploy, and more modern locking technologies from other manufacturers but it's hard to beat the ergonomics and simplicity of the Delica along with the crazy strong lock up and reliability of Spyderco's lockbacks. However, I agree that it should be priced more competitively and then it would be the GOAT. At the end of the day, knives are a very personal thing and one person's GOAT might be someone else's reject and vice versa.

    Hahaha! I have that same knife in that exact color sitting right by my keyboard. To me the Delica is still the G.o.A.T. and my most-carried knife. I've got one in HAP40 on the way. To me a Delica with a FFG is the knife I'd choose if I could only own one folder. I have that same RAT 2 in the same color but AUS8, great blade for the money. I tend to agree that if you're getting a Delica you might as well spend $20 more and get it in a premium steel. In HAP40, K390 or even M390 it's hard to beat.

I appreciate Spyderco being an American company although they do produce all over, their Taichung offerings are solid performers that are unparalleled throughout the knife world including CRK and Hinderer type midtechs are concerned. I have a solitary disagreement with you, and that's that I think VG-10 is just fine. The corrosion resistance is actually pretty surprising on it, and the edge retention would really only bother me if I compared it to the super crazy stuff like Maxamet or ZDP-189.
    I think it's just fine under the caveat that you're already a knife nerd--so basically all of Spyderco's consumer base. It's pretty rock solid, customizable, and classic such that someone who likes knives would be able to appreciate it. I'd honestly go with it for the same reason as a GEC or other pricey traditional; it's classic and nerdy.

      There are so many proper alternatives to the clones, but Spyderco is especially susceptible. From what I hear, Ganzo conditions access to review knives on the reviewer not mentioning what the knife design mimics. Still, though the Ganzo designs are mostly derived from others, they do not pretend to be the same brand or the same quality. In the world economy, many have things to hide. The dishonesty in the industry extends to many, including some Americans pretending their Chinese produced knives are US produced customs and mid-tecs. This re-badging is done throughout the world. In some cases, such as Swiss watch movements, parts may be sourced elsewhere, such as China, and the buyer would not know. When Chinese companies produce near duplicate watch movements, some assume it is reverse engineering, but others know better; often, they do not copy parts, they made them in the first place. It extends into many areas of the global economy, and many US firms may be reluctant to admit the extent of outsourcing.

    Haven`t carried mine in a long, long time. Main reasons: replacement cost is getting way up there so I don't carry it at work where it will get abused and possibly lost, yet it looks and feel like a cheap plastic knife so it`s not really suitable for dressier kind of outing, the large ricasso gets in the way often for what I do with a small blade when doing outdoor activities and it's not a fidgeter knife; basically, I have better options for folding knife in every aspect of my life. I won't sell it though, so it just sit in my collection. Also, at current price it is not a knife I recommend to friends, family members and co-workers, it's just not worth that at all.

    Saw this video again and had to chime in. Within the last 6 months, since I first viewed the video, I've purchased Tangrams, Ganzo/Firebirds and, most importantly, Steel Wills. Don't get me wrong, I own at least half a dozen different Delicas, many colors, edge types etc and love them BUT, the time for the Delica 5 has definitely come. The one knife (for me) that pushed me over the edge was the Cutjack. Now I have a flipper in a light package with a choice of steels and I paid $38 for the Mini FRN model, grabbed a second one for $21 on an Amazon special, and now if I grab a knife in that size/weight range, I take the Cutjack. At HALF the price of the comparable Delica (or Endura if you go with the full size Cutjack) The shine has definitely left the venerable Delica. Hard for me to say after carrying a Delica for years (literally) but true.
    Which begs a question: what should a Delica 5 look like? I'm thinking:
    S30v
    Flipper
    ball bearings
    Same as current price point.
    I know, sounds a lot like a Domino (except the last point) but hey, I calls em like I sees um.

    • @joshuasutton2163
      @joshuasutton2163 5 років тому +1

      Oh please no. We have many more than enough ball bearing flippers on the market. I understand that people love 'em, but this knife is a great utilitarian tool, and to replace PB washers with bearings would greatly detract from that. If you want bearings and a flipper, check out WE, Civivi, Reate, Kizer, QSP, Ruike, SRM, and many others. I say good on Spyderco and Benchmade for keeping with the PB washers.

    My edc now is benchmade 940-2 for typical use expectations and if I will
    Be doing a more serious use of my blade, my PM2 is my go to.
    PM2 just naturally flips, has better ergos, and the compression lock is superior for one handed operating. Delica is not flickable as aforementioned. Requires more inertia to open and close

    Time will tell... but from the extremely short vids that I’ve watched from the 2018 shot show... the upcoming Mantra 3 seems like an unofficial upgrade / updated delica 4. Nevertheless good review with some hard truths. Coming from the owner of last years sprint run delica 4 with D.PS 15 VG-10 blade and foliage green FRN. Also have the Wharncliffe bladed delica. Great Knives... but as you suggested... slowly getting badly beaten in the market place. Thanks for posting!

      Slicey Dicey ouch. That would be scary high. Suddenly starting to make Benchmade seem like a bargain if that’s where Spyderco is heading (almost an exaggeration..., I know). But hopefully it won’t be priced that badly. The mantra 3 (and the rhino) are on my radar as possible acquisitions for ‘18. But if you’re right... I might need to pump the breaks and reevaluate where the knife money gets spent.

    • @rockets4kids
      @rockets4kids 6 років тому

      Eric Glesser said the Mantra 3 will come in at 20-25% less than the existing Mantra. That's less than it sounds considering the MAP on the Mantra got bumped by nearly 15%.
      But realistically the Mantra 3 is the same construction and materials as the PM2 and Sage 5 so it really *should* be in that ballpark price-wise.

  • @asmitty952
    @asmitty952 5 років тому +2

    Spyderco's Japanese manufacturing has been shooting them in the foot the last couple of years. The more recent higher end Japanese knives like the D'Allara 3 and ATR 2 didn't sell well because they were asking nearly $200 for simple black G-10 with either VG-10 or S30V knives. The US made options like the PM2 and Manix 2 which are US made with the same materials come in far under that. Manufacturing in Seki City is just not price competitive with their other offerings anymore.
    I'll probably spark some argument with this, but if I had to choose between the byrd Meadowlark and the Spyderco Delica as a new knife buyer comparing them side-by-side, I'd choose the Meadowlark. The difference in quality between VG-10 and 8Cr13MoV does not justify the price difference in the knives.

  • @EricWebSurfer
    @EricWebSurfer 2 роки тому

    From nearly all of my research, VG10 is considered by most to be 'better' than D2 and 420HC. D2 probably holds an edge a little longer, but it's semi-stainless and overall less desirable ...usually. 420HC is better than most people give it credit for, but it's still more on the budget end. Still, I agree it's overpriced for what it is. I'd be fine with S30V for that price.

    I have the Steel Will Cutjack, Modus and Tenet in D2 and the OKC Rats.. I think the Delica feels a bit more refined with better F&F..

There is a reason Spyderco knives still command a premium price. They are worth it. Kershaw sells their 30 dollar junk to people who don't know any better.
