Title says it all. I've been wanting to make a Dream SMP animatic for a long time, the only problem is that I can't draw, let alone animate. So I chose the route of stock footage and a little bit of (bad) editing in After Effects.
Of course stock footage in a sense is way harder to work with because you're very limited, so I apologize if I wasn't able to include everyone. But I got really lucky on a few clips.
This video cost me not only time, but money as well. To be more precise, around 100 euros.

Hello kind people! Commenting again, because I wanted to reiterate a point that a few people have missed:
I DO NOT APPROVE REUPLOADS/EDITS of my videos on other platforms like TikTok, ESPECIALLY WITHOUT CREDITS.
If you want to make something similar from scratch, go ahead! A lot of people made other DSMP live action videos with stock footage, and they all look very cool! Of course I don't own stock footage, no one does, so if you feel inspired you should absolutely try to make your own version!
But what I DO OWN are the hours I've spent editing a lot of those clips on After Effects. Taking those clips, or even the entire video, and re-posting it to make it look like your work is extremely disrespectful. If you want to make edits out of this, you have to be crediting me, especially if you're planning to use those edited clips that I was talking about before.

this made me realize just how much the dream smp varies, like we've got medieval period with church prime, pirates with captain puffy, fantasy something with the egg, the 1700s in the US with L'manberg, Las Vegas vibes with Las Nevadas, future techy stuff with purpled's ufo, ancient egypt with foolish, Japan with kinoko kingdom, and literally hell with the nether. Like it's so cool how they make it all work in one continuous story.

It's not until you see the irl equivalents that you realize how dark and disturbing some of the SMP is. Destroyed cities, uncontrollable fires, people forced into exile, bloody, bloody war, drug addictions, nuclear programs, demonic powers, burning books, people trapped, torn apart between two worlds, imprisoned and tortured. It's DARK dark.
And childs being forced into wars early
I find this absolutely amazing, because to a outsider of the DSMP it all looks like chaos, casino, demonic creatures, and royalty don't look like they're even somewhat related to other people
But if you know the DSMP you know what all of the cuts mean, even who the characters are.
It's so pretty put in a real life setting

This is actually brilliant. I saw Lmanburg, Snowchester, Kinoko Kingdom, the Arctic, Las Nevadas, Eret's Castle, all at once. I saw Tommy and Tubbo exploring the dense forest together. I saw the Holy Church Prime. I saw Niki's innocence and naivety. I saw the Crowfather and his grandson go fishing together. I saw Ponk's lemon tree burned. I saw the Captain departed on November 16th. I saw those black horsemen. I saw Friend and the Train Limbo, and how Wilbur was ressurrected. The past, the present, and perhaps, even the future.
This is more than just a trailer. It's an experience.

i saw the inbetween, karl's time travelling and his library, a memory book getting burned?, dream in prison, schlatt and quackity's deal, ranboo's panic room, the festival fireworks, this is just so lovely and the fact that to someone outside the fandom this barely makes any sense, but to us there's a hundred different scenes and meanings, it all connects beautifully makes me very happy :3

To any outsider, this is a collection of images, barely making sense by themselves, and even more confusing put together. Random bits of death, destruction, buildings, cultures, and people.
But to a Dream SMP follower, they recognize the nuances, the cuts, the symbols, and quickly equate them with characters, places, and stories.
It is absolutely incredible that this can be done, and I can't imagine the amount of time and effort that you put into this video, no, this EXPERIENCE.

I’m amazed at how many stock clips you found that fit so well. The Ghostbur segment was particularly amazing, mixing cuts of the blue paint on fingers and the sheep with the train? And the flash of the pickaxe toward the end (any of the big Q clips, really) was amazing. The cut from the casino to the burgers caught me off guard. And the crows/ravens in the snow at the start (followed by those emerald earrings, how did you find something that fit so well??) had me screaming.
How many hours did you spend curating these clips? This must have taken forever to collect and organize, I can’t even imagine. You somehow managed to get every plot line and most of the characters, it’s amazing.
Well worth every second (and penny) spent. This is definitely joining the ranks of my favorite dsmp videos of all time. Just right up there in “I don’t think there’s anything better than this” sort of territory.

To answer your questions: the editing part took me less than 2 weeks, and that time was used mostly on After Effects. But I started collecting clips at the end of June, and I kept searching for stuff all the way until the last day of editing, which was when I uploaded it. So it was almost two months spent only curating the clips (not full months tho, I took breaks :D )

The way I understood all the little references and plot points IMMEDIATELY. You're so talented, doing this from found footage? holy cow, I'd literally watch any movie you'd make a trailer for. This is beyond impressive, and the aesthetics are beautiful!

The fact that I can correlate the stock photos to the Dream SMP plot itself means that you have achieved the exact purpose of this imagery. Job well done.
Anyone couldve mistaken this as a real adaption made by a group of people (cmon dsmp fans are making rpg games and a animated series and full out songs about dsmp) then just some stock footages edited together. In the trailer, I saw everything I expected: a CD war, a bloody party, a festival in Manberg, and some moments of time travel. It's just incredible. You know, while watching, I watched the trailer, and at the same time I remembered all the events that took place there. And he mentioned some heroes. I don't know everyone yet, but I can visually guess who is who, which made watching the video even more interesting. Thank you for these vivid emotions. I wish you more inspiration for new projects and more fans. :)

dude the actors for the clips of the two boys in the woods actually look so much like tommy and tubbo, especially the boy on the right in the clip where they’re lighting a match, he looks EXACTLY like tommy. the editing is so amazing, this is so fucking cool and you’re very talented

I was actually thinking about those exact clips after I saw Wilbur's final lore stream!
I remember choosing them for the "aesthetic", I just thought they looked cool, and since the person in the clip is dressed like Wilbur they felt perfect to me!
But now, a year later, they gain a whole new meaning!

There’s a very good disturbing feel to this that just individually fits the events characters and feel of dsmp it’s super good just from stock and underrated!
Tbh i was kinda expecting like a crack video but this was??? Actually really really cool? Like I cannot even imagine how much time it took to put this all together, let alone edit it and put it to the song. It was really fun trying to pick up what everything was alluding when it wasn't as clear as designs somebody had control over

This would be such a fascinating exercise for a classroom. Like, assign students to identify with timestamps how many different storylines or genres they can identify, and then drop the bomb that it's all the same story. It's a brilliant eye-opener that, given the right medium, your art doesn't need to be restricted by arbitrary lines of "how it should be" and could inspire a bunch of young artists like the DSMP is doing now!
i love that the storyline is so eclectic that this works so well despite the extreme variance in settings/genres of the clips

Idk if this had already been mentioned but I love the themes of winter and snow in some of the clips because I imagine that, like the winter, war is akin to the season. This is genuinely the most creative thing ive seen by far holy crap! Even the fact that (if you are a dream smp fan), you’re easily able to tell what scene each cut was from as well as who the characters are. I cant even imagine the effort this took! Amazing job:)

This is really cool. I'll admit that some of it went over my head, even as a dedicated DSMP viewer, but the fact that you could create this out of such limited materials is really cool. I don't know much about editing, but I can tell this was well done.
Wow, this is incredibly well done, like omg good job! like you were able to almost recreate the scenes of the dsmp and make the scenarios real, I can not even imagine the amount of time and editing this probably took.
