When I was a teen, I took a small "paddle board" at the local pool, and somehow found a resonance to a wide but shallow warm-pool, deliberately. It was about 15 metres long and 5 wide, maybe half metre deep. I was astonished that after a few minutes of pushing the water back and forth, the whole pool sloshed (barely) centre-to-edges lengthwise. It wasn't busy there, and it kept doing it noticeably for almost a minute after I stopped. Hardly anyone noticed though. But I thought it was pretty cool at the time lol.

After my Fluid Mechanics 1 frenzy I had run out of disposable cup covers and faced with dilemma of which cup style was the most spillproof I concluded a thin and tall cup would develop a lot less potential energy during a horizontal acceleration and hence less pressure on the side walls. Pressure can also be expressed as mm of water column so you if you actually do the math you get a direct reading of the wave height for each acceleration vector and cup style you choose. Though your equation shows a different property (and is a ton easier to solve), while my approach focuses on the sudden and violent horizontal accelerations transmitted from my car's cupholder.

So maybe that's why waiters can carry drinks on a tray balanced on an upturned palm. Their arm may be acting as a reverse pendulum so that the tray is not oscillating in harmony with the waiter's steps anymore. Very interesting.
By the way if you walk backwards with the coffee cup it is also less likely to spill as your natural tendency to use you arm as as counterbalance to your steps doesn't happen so much in backwards mode. Of course on average you'll spill a lot more coffee
this way as you trip over your furniture ;)

This is, amusingly, exactly how I carry my travel mug without spilling it when I don't want to wash the lid. I just hold it by the top by three finger tips and let my hand more or less swing free as I walk. The same effect is much harder to get holding a coffee mug by the handle.

You could also add baffles to your cup. This effectively reduces the cup's radius into a collection of smaller radii. Then the frequency of your walking never adds enough energy to the system.
Of course the best way to stop your cup from spilling is to add a lid.

    • @metamorphicorder
      @metamorphicorder 5 років тому +2

Yes. Theres a book called rendezvous with rama. Its about a giant ass spaceship. Its cylindrical. At the 'equator' theres a body of water inside.
It was called the cylindrical sea. An annulus of water about a kilometer or so wide. One shore was about 100 meters above the water and the other side was 1000 meters above the surface. Fore and aft respectively.
This was so that while the se was liquid, when the ship accelerated, the water would have some slosh room aftward.
There were also antislosh baffle structures under the sea so that directional or rotational changes causing sloshing would be mitigated.
      Its pretty cool.

Just cut two plastic sheets about the inside profile of your cup, and a slot halfway up in one, and halfway down in the other, then interleave them to make a cross (viewed edgewise) Place this in the cup and try your drink. They probably won't seal well enough to warrant making more slots or holes in them, but you can if you want.

One thing I also noticed about many jars too, rather than using the screen trick, I first noticed with those clear straight Coca Cola drinking glasses... the inward bevel at the top is surprisingly good at rejecting spills even if the liquid begins to resonate. It seems the feature, if large enough, redirect the liquid rising up the sides toward the centre, and even if necessary, sloshes and throws it away from the outside edge. Even if the liquid rises above the edge, inertia directs it toward the centre instead of letting it climb out over the edge.
Apparently some places use a similar design for seawalls, to reduce seawater overflowing during storm waves at high tide... The water sloshing up to them gets thrown seaward instead of climbing up over the edge and flooding the walkway etc.
With the sheer number of glasses, cups and mugs made non-stackable, I'm surprised this feature isn't much more commonplace. Sometimes I'll keep a few small jars in the cupboard just to drink out of if I know I'll be up and about. As much as I like the Coca Cola glasses, I didn't get more because those ones are thin and easily break 😜.

There's another structure that reduces spillage due to sloshing, and I learned about it by using those straight Coca Cola tumblers, and it's also built into some walls built into a choppy shoreline...
The top edge of the glass is curved inward, such that liquid sloshing up the side gets thrown towards the middle, instead of up over the edge, avoiding spillage. It has that horizontal kinetic energy by the time it reaches the edge. Works well. On shorelines, waves will splash outward toward the water instead of splashing back down and soaking the walkway etc. above. It works only for sloshing, not long period overflows, of course.
