How long does the transplant surgery for the recipient usually take? From out with the old to in with the new?

Great question. The heart implant in a patient who has never had surgery before, takes about 1 hour. If the recipient, had previous open-heart surgery, the transplant can take approximately 90 minutes or longer. It varies however, the entire time outside of the body for the heart is 4 hours in total.

@@cardiacsurgerypatienteduca2445 Thanks for the response. I would have thought it took longer. This is a great channel. Please continue with the content.

Thanks for the video once again. Please Dr Anthony, I have some questions. I'm so sorry to bother you.
    1. Does the organs not die when the donor is brain dead, or how long after does the organ die and becomes unsuitable?
    2. After resection, how long will it take before hypoxia-ischemia render the cardiomyocytes dead?
    3. Do you keep them in a preservation environment during the time before transplant into the donor?
    4. How do you handle the immuno-recognition part, will the recipient require immunosupressant?
    5. What's the prognosis for the recipient after the procedure?
I'll be happy to know how long the process takes.
Please only answer when you feel comfortable and unhinged Dr Anthony. I am very sorry to bother you sir.

I apologize for the delay in responding. 1. The organs of patients do not "die" when a person is brain dead as long as the person's heart is contracting and working normally. In fact, this idea is why patients who are "brain dead" make good organ donors because their organs are normal as long as their heart is providing oxygenated blood to their bodies. 2. There is a 4 hour "ischemic time" that we have to take the organ out of the body and put it in a recipient. There are a lot of details I'm leaving out but the short answer is 4 hours. 3. Yes the donor heart is left in a cold preservation fluid storage container. There are multiple options for this. 4. The immune-supression regimen is very complex! More than I can give in a few sentences. Please read up on this. 5. After a heart transplant, the average length of the heart lasting is 10 years. This varies for each organ. Take care.
