Thanks so much for explaining the TDC and timing mark. I bought a broken x430 machine for $20 on a chance. The cam was seized and the belt jumped off. Freed up the cam and I guessed at the timing. It did run, but seemed weak. After watching this video, I re-times it. It idles perfect and revs up quickly with lots of power. Much better. Thank you.
Thank you for this video. My ryobi almost ended up on the curb today. I spent half the day tearing it apart and replacing everything from the spark plug to the gas lines and filter. Between your video and one other I was able to get it running and the carb adjusted.

@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Thanks! Got it running for about half a second before it died. Added oil, fuel, checked the spark, timing, and sprayed starting fluid inside the cylinder. Might try replacing the fuel lines + filter, or might just put it back on the curb.
TDC and timing tip fixed mine. Ran perfect last time I used a week ago. Wouldn't start after many many pulls, removing carb and spark plug. Thanks for the video!
thank you for this- my Ryobi is just like this model and I've been looking for the idle adjustment screw(s), and it was the one that I thought "no, can't be that one" so I'll give it a go later this morning
I sorted out the timing belt jumping off by fitting a thin bit of metal cut from a tin on the front of the " timing " cog. I held it on with wire passed from the back around a spoke and through holes in the metal. I put four wires on and it solved the belt coming off problem permanently.
Same problem here. The camshaft don't have bearings, have some plastic bushes. Those bushes ware melted and allowed lots of play in the timming belt pulley. Even the camshaft case was worn. The belt was keep jumping off or missing teeths. I guess are build not to last long.
I would love to see this engine torn completely apart! I have not found any videos where they take this model trimmer apart. I could be wrong but I think there may not be any bolts holding the cylinder to the crankcase so you may have to cut the engine apart. But that’s okay none of these trimmers are worth fixing, it would just be cool to see the piston and everything inside. I’m not sure how they even put the engine together if you can’t take the cylinder off lol. Anyway I appreciate your kindness and good spirit even when people don’t leave you the nicest comments! There aren’t many people like you out there!
I'll have to take a closer look at the cylinder head arrangement first. Besides I was only going to take it done to the front of the engine to look at the timing gear on the crank
Oh okay I mistakened that for tearing the whole engine down to the crank. I would love to see that but I would also like to see it working again. Especially since this one had the metal camshaft and many variants of these trimmers have a plastic camshaft. I have always wanted one of these trimmers because I think they are very neat with the timing belt
I got 7 of these like-new at an auction. (One had a fractured flywheel, and ended up being a parts machine.) Not a one of them ran when I got them. They key to success was adjusting the valves. After that every one of them purred. Sucks that you cannot tension the belt. Two of them had slipped. Also, you have to keep that oil fresh. It gets black pretty quickly. I think 15W50 is the recommended.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Of course. I have kept one of these around for my use. It has been very dependable. However, you have to keep the oil fresh, the valves adjusted, and watch carefully for the rocker posts loosening up.
I actually worked on this same exact trimmer that had a string attachment. Lucky on mine is that the belt was tight. Only thing I can say is to get a new belt as those do tend to stretch out over time.

I just think that there's an issue with the timing belt like it needs replacing or if it has a tensioner mechanism it needs repairing. It definitely needs a new carburetor because its internal main jet check valve is leaking. I have this exact model sitting in my shed. My neighbor had picked one up brand new from Home Depot. He asked one of the employees in the department which one of the trimmer was the easiest to operate. This is way before batteries. He told him that this one takes regular gas and you don't have to worry about mixing oil. Once he got home he couldn't figure out how to put it together and how to add line to the trimmer. I showed him he went off to use it and kept on having issues with it. The second time he used it he came over and told me here you can keep it. He said that he could not figure it out and that his dad was going to hire people to take care of his front and back yard. I tried it a couple times of course I know what I was doing but I did not like the feeling of it. It just feels like it doesn't have a lot of power like a two-stroke. So I ended up making it a dedicated edgar. As always I enjoyed your video and I always make sure to hit the like button. Look forward to the next video.
if you're also saying the engine isn't getting up to speed either, I would first look at the exhaust being blocked either by a mud dauber next, or carbon on the screen.
Okay I have a question I have a homelite ST275 that has good compression good spark replaced the plug but could this be the problem that the metering diaphragm is different even though the needle is the same height And it still won't start even if I put fuel in the engine it will pop and the carburetor will still pop so what else could a problem be?
It looks like there is a problem with the belt tension. I don't exactly know how these engines keep tension on the timing belt, but I assume that is why it keeps falling off the timing gear.
My second summer with the same Ryobi as seen here. The Cord itsef seems jammed up. I thought I might tear the cord it was so stuck. Fresh gas, new oil added. And still nothing... it did loosen some what but not enough for a turn over. No start after one season. snake bit.
The engine is hydrolocked with oil. It must be stored right side up or the oil runs into the cylinder and hydrolocks it. Remove the sparkplug and crank it through a few times. wipe the oil off of the sparkpug and it should run.
I have a Ryobi S430 it get really hot and shut down soon after it starts., I have already remove and re install the carb, and give it a full clean also while doing this I make sure all the components were working and in good shape, I also change the oil, it has spark since starts right away, any idea what would be wrong with it, btw it runs perfectly without attachments.
sure, if the carb is clean, and the metering diaphragm is still flexible, you either have a gas cap that isn't venting or your carb needs to be readjusted.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE but as far as aligning the pulleys . . . like, if you put a straight edge along both pulleys, would they be in line? Is there no way of adjusting the lining up of those pulleys? Maybe the cam can be adjusted left and right to move into better alignment with the crank pulley? I've got one that I'm starting to work on. Thanks a lot, Buddy. It looks like a cool motor. I don't know how long it will last but it would make a great model boat motor.
I have 2 of these and the belts keep popping off and I noticed the top cover that goes over the head holds the timing belt on mine kept falling off without it and now its fine
This motor has a flaw that the cam has wear to it ,it plays and that's where the belt skips. There is a way to fix you need to heat up the cams inside the head just a little and then hit the camshaft with a hammer then with a rod until the shaft pops out of the head. Then you pull out the oil seal and instead put a 8x16x5 sealed bearing in the seals place. then just hit the shaft back in very lightly not damaging the plastic timing belt cam on the shaft . That will fix the timing belt from losing position , just need a bearing in place of seal. That's the fix I did to my free ryobi I picked up.
How can I tell when the piston is at the top. What should it feel like? I can feel my screw driver going up and down and then it goes way down (further in). Thanks for any help!
I'd try and see why the belt kept coming off because there is a lot of slop in the belt itself. You can see it on the side of the belt. I don't like 4-cycle trimmers either and unless you have all 4-cycle stuff you'll end up mixing gas anyhow. Thanks and GBWYou!.
on this particular one? sure, it's running, I made an adjustment on the cam gear so that more of the belt would make contact. However its not over for this thing. I plan on making more changes to make it a permanent fix. Should be getting back to this thing soon. Thanks for asking.
Where can I buy metering diaphragms in bulk for the small weed eaters and saws. Most carbs all I find wrong is the metering diaphragms are hard and just need them to fix a carb.
I know its been a while since you made the video. I have 2 of these trimmer motor heads. Now Im wondering what caused the belt to come off the cam gear. Defective gear, bent shaft, bad belt, I have to ask, did you fix, if you did how?
the reason is poor lubrication causing the bushing to wear on the camshaft. Because of the weaver the cam gear is able to move closer to the drive gear, resulting in timing belt slack. unfortunately the fix for this requires the most of the engine to be disassembled. So no I have not fixed it yet.
I agree, keep going. Is it possible the previous owner took the cam gear off to inspect it and put the gear on backwards? The gear has , for lack of better words a retaining ring around the backside as it is installed now. Or perhaps the crank gear has moved in some way. I noticed the belt always moved toward the shaft end. I would think the timing gears are out of line in some way, or the belt has stretched. Trimmer is in good shape. I would fix it and use it or flip it.
As a small engine mechanic I these strimmers are junk did a full carb rebuild made no difference ended up placing a £7 after market carb on works great but reluctant to sell on.
Let's see what it is it might be a lemon that may be what it is I haven't seen that one before but it's bad enough when they use belts as timing I mean they use it in cars but
Not familiar with that trimmer, does the parts breakdown show a washer (for lack of a better word) that goes on the front of the cam gear to keep the belt in place? Seems that would be a good idea. As for whether you should keep it or not, if you need one, why not. It can be fixed to work whether it was a factory issue or lack in the design department or not...
Man top notch video bud I found mine on the curb also n tried same things so the timing was off it runs good so far but it was out of oil when I got it so we will see for how long anyway thanks again
Have same strimmers. 3 design faults with these. 1. Carb is too small to comply with emissions. 2. The front bearing /casing behind the cam sprocket wears and allows the camshaft to droop which is possibly the issue with your belt sliding off. I had a close look at mine when I had it apart and think it’s possible to modify this to fit a roller bearing block and seal , but room is tight and would require engineers skills. 3. The throttle cable clamp in the handle is really badly designed. No way to adjust the throttle cable tension. Some years ago I replaced my carb with a generic one from eBay. Cost around 10 euros including shipping from CZ. Distance between mounting bolt Centre’s is 31 mm and I can’t remember bore/throat size of the carb. Iirmc I measured mine and one I bought had a slightly larger bore. This solved all starting problems for me until the throttle cable broke. Checking local gardening services was told cable not available or quoted repair cost close to cost of a new one. So So Since I have many dewalt cordless power tools I decided to go electric. Purchased a flexvolt 54v unit with motor in handle ,which gives me a 9 ah battery that will also run my other cordless items. Have ordered parts online for the ryobi which I will repair as a spare.
Personally, I'd totally tear it apart and find out why that belt keeps coming off, but I am that kind of person, I like to know why. Makes me wonder if that was the problem with my old Ryobi trimmer when it went to the curb after 2 years of use.
Hiya, thanks for this. Mine has a similar issue, but I noted some plastic shavings on the shaft where the gear mounts so I am concerned that the gear actually stripped at that point. The way you show the timing relies on the gear still being correctly aligned to the camshaft. How would I check this without having another camshaft to compare it to? I know people might say it isn’t worthwhile, but I love fixing things and getting something more out of it, so would like to try
that would be tough without another to compare. The only way would be to use the video to use a reference were the cam lobes need to be but I would think would be even tougher.
Well, to sum it up, the only serious issue is the timing belt. The carb looks just like it's been mis-adjusted, High and Low side. Did you look at a way to adjust the belt tracking or perhaps that belt is worn enough to stretch out which can cause it to slip ?
There is no tentioner, the belt has lost its tightness and needs a new one. and if the belt was good the unit will over heat and stop unless you remove the muffler I wasted money and got a new muffler but still over heated Works good without a muffler but it's hella loud
hi, great video as always! I've been following your videos and have been able to fix various machines to use at home for the cost of trouble shooting and some parts! Just a quick question, I have an older 4 stroke ryobi trimmer (875r model). I obtained a gasket kit for it and did the usual cleaning and replacing gaskets, it works and seems to run fine, but for some reason if I depress the primer bulb more than 6x, gas leaks from between the bulb and pump diaphragm gaskets. I tried tightening 4 the screws down, but still leaks! Could the issue the wrong diaphragm pump gasket (long vs flat nipple?) or something else? thank you!
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Thanks! i re-used the old gasket and no more leaks! gasket GC issues i guess! btw: what is the difference between the two channels you have (both equally enjoyable) but was curious.

@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE I mean you already knew right when you saw it at 3clock instead of 6 and said but what caused this to happen. literally running 10 of these trimmers hard in factory would have showed them that flaw based on your comments and clearly how often it happens, and the breaking the trimmer into interchangeable parts is a smart move because it kept me with the company when needing to replace my first because I saved little bit only needing new engine and not entire setup. Ill admit they got me twice ;'(
I have one of these with all attachments. It just stopped and with all I have invested even to a small tiller for the wife's flower garden, I would like to see what it takes to repair it. Will be watching. Jim
That's a serious downgrade from prior models. I have a vintage Ryobi 960r manufactured in the 90s, and it uses push rods not a timing belt. Other than the old engine issues you'd expect with the carburetor and fuel lines, it has never given me any trouble. Oh, and it also has an air filter not a screen.
I have 2 of the same Ryobi 4 cycle trimmers and they have been amazing. They are lighter than newer 4 cycle trimmers and I they still run perfect. I change oil 2 sometimes 3 times a year, they deserve it. They are the only 4 cycle trimmer I would prefer over a 2 cycle. Best part is I got them for free and I did not expect them to be this good
I should have been more clear I was talking about the older 875r push rod ryobi 4 cycle trimmers. I have two of them and those are phenomenal. As for the one in your video I can not say I am much of a fan lol. I do think it’s very cool they made it with a timing belt, it’s one of a kind. I just wish they were reliable. if you're also saying the engine isn't getting up to speed either, I would first look at the exhaust being blocked either by a mud dauber next, or carbon on the screen.
Great videos, but if you had the time it would be interested in seeing what the issue is. Thanks
yes I'm hoping to get to the bottom of the issue soon
I've been using mix gas with oil . runs great . but that's my problem . thks for making this video
You are welcome
Okay I have a question I have a homelite ST275 that has good compression good spark replaced the plug but could this be the problem that the metering diaphragm is different even though the needle is the same height And it still won't start even if I put fuel in the engine it will pop and the carburetor will still pop so what else could a problem be?
I would like a compression test number on the engine first before I try and guess what the problem is

@@weedeaterkid666 thank you. There might be a leak on the engine that's causing a problem. Either an engine seal or gasket.
It looks like there is a problem with the belt tension. I don't exactly know how these engines keep tension on the timing belt, but I assume that is why it keeps falling off the timing gear.
yes it is a bit loose and there doesn't look like theres any sort of tensioner on the belt.
The one I worked on few weeks ago was 4 stroke but still used gas mix it had a cool sound and more low end power was on a pole saw
was it a stihl?
Yeah
I would repair it and would also try to figure out a way of making something to keep the belt in place 👍
I might have to try that.
My second summer with the same Ryobi as seen here. The Cord itsef seems jammed up. I thought I might tear the cord it was so stuck. Fresh gas, new oil added.
And still nothing... it did loosen some what but not enough for a turn over. No start after one season. snake bit.
that sucks
I would perhaps try replacing the timing belt as it may have stretched, but its not worth spending a lot of time any money on it.
very true. I'm having a hard time seeing how to remove and replace the belt though as the diagram doesn't show a lot of detail
I wonder what determines the alignment of the pulleys for the cam and crank pulleys?
TDC for the timing gear, and the cam gear has alignment marks on it as well .
Great video bro. Thanks for not getting off topic and talking bs got 20 minutes
Glad you enjoyed
I have 2 of these and the belts keep popping off and I noticed the top cover that goes over the head holds the timing belt on mine kept falling off without it and now its fine
yes these have lots of problem. I'll have to take a look again, and see if mine is having that issue.
Since it’s free and it’s a ryobi, I would maybe try fixing it
that is a good point
This motor has a flaw that the cam has wear to it ,it plays and that's where the belt skips. There is a way to fix you need to heat up the cams inside the head just a little and then hit the camshaft with a hammer then with a rod until the shaft pops out of the head. Then you pull out the oil seal and instead put a 8x16x5 sealed bearing in the seals place. then just hit the shaft back in very lightly not damaging the plastic timing belt cam on the shaft . That will fix the timing belt from losing position , just need a bearing in place of seal. That's the fix I did to my free ryobi I picked up.
wow you did a lot of work on that thing.
How can I tell when the piston is at the top. What should it feel like? I can feel my screw driver going up and down and then it goes way down (further in). Thanks for any help!
when the piston is at the top of its travel right before moving back down. Just keep an eye on your screwdriver
I'd try and see why the belt kept coming off because there is a lot of slop in the belt itself. You can see it on the side of the belt. I don't like 4-cycle trimmers either and unless you have all 4-cycle stuff you'll end up mixing gas anyhow. Thanks and GBWYou!.
cam bushing wear.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Yessir, they'll run downhill.
So can we get an up date on the 4 cycle trimmer?
on this particular one? sure, it's running, I made an adjustment on the cam gear so that more of the belt would make contact. However its not over for this thing. I plan on making more changes to make it a permanent fix. Should be getting back to this thing soon. Thanks for asking.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Alright!! 👍👍😀
Where can I buy metering diaphragms in bulk for the small weed eaters and saws. Most carbs all I find wrong is the metering diaphragms are hard and just need them to fix a carb.
I search for metering diaphragms, at Amazon , and just order a couple of differently varieties, of 10 or 20 packs of them.
I would fix it and use it or flip it.
thanks Rickey Mitchell
As a small engine mechanic I these strimmers are junk did a full carb rebuild made no difference ended up placing a £7 after market carb on works great but reluctant to sell on.
thank you for the information I appreciate it.
Let's see what it is it might be a lemon that may be what it is I haven't seen that one before but it's bad enough when they use belts as timing I mean they use it in cars but
true, the only problem is that this timing belt doesn't have a tensioner assembly .
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE like I said before: design flaw
Not familiar with that trimmer, does the parts breakdown show a washer (for lack of a better word) that goes on the front of the cam gear to keep the belt in place? Seems that would be a good idea. As for whether you should keep it or not, if you need one, why not. It can be fixed to work whether it was a factory issue or lack in the design department or not...
no, theres no washer, the fix was to remove the cam gear and flip it around.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Well that sound perfect...
Please do a caberater adjustment from scratch and the echo 225 both and the L and H screw thanks.
Just found one in local metal dump and it runs perfectly, 2pulls and it starts, I must have found the one good one.
you must have, but over time, it might change.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE it is low on compression , I have a idea for another use,. I want to connect it to a small compressor
how small? like a pancake compressor something bigger than that ?
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE no just a 12 volt mini comptessor
Man top notch video bud I found mine on the curb also n tried same things so the timing was off it runs good so far but it was out of oil when I got it so we will see for how long anyway thanks again
thank you Joshua O'brien
Mine is about to be on the curb. Bought brand new on offerup unopened unused. It won’t start super annoyed.
sorry to hear that
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE we’re you able to get this one working without it stopping?
@@tcaver to some extent. I had to take most of the engine to do it though.
Yo I think I have a timing problem too but I don’t know what you do with the screwdriver to figure out when it’s at the top
the screwdriver will stop moving up and start to move down.
I'm in the same situation. however mine starts, but when I give it gas it bogs down. any suggestions?
sure adjust the carb, if that doesn't work, you'll have to either service the carb or replace it with an aftermarket one.
So So
Since I have many dewalt cordless power tools I decided to go electric.
Purchased a flexvolt 54v unit with motor in handle ,which gives me a 9 ah battery that will also run my other cordless items.
Have ordered parts online for the ryobi which I will repair as a spare.
thanks for the information
Personally, I'd totally tear it apart and find out why that belt keeps coming off, but I am that kind of person, I like to know why. Makes me wonder if that was the problem with my old Ryobi trimmer when it went to the curb after 2 years of use.
this one is unfortunately not good new, the bushing for the camshaft has worn out, and without a tensioner on the belt, the belt won't stay on
If you don’t find anything major at the crankshaft, could you shim out the cam gear it get a better alinement of the two gears.
that's an idea.
Having similar issue with mine. It want continue to run
Yours might be just a carb issue.
Mines turns shuts off when I tilt it. it’ll stay running for about 30secs then shuts off. 😭😭😭
these are not meant to be tilted
Well, to sum it up, the only serious issue is the timing belt. The carb looks just like it's been mis-adjusted, High and Low side.
Did you look at a way to adjust the belt tracking or perhaps that belt is worn enough to stretch out which can cause it to slip ?
not adjustment can be made, unfortunately.
excellent video. I guess its time to put my '"almost new" ryobi out on the curb.
yes it's not worth the hassle sometimes.
very good video. THANKS I have the S430 Model with the same problem , it wont start
have you tried to put fuel into the carbs throat and do a test start?
Did you fix it? i have a pro 4 more, older and much heavier. this video gave me some insight. my guess ryobi cheap out.
no, it requires a lot to fix.
Heard some valve noise
yes or its just a noisy engine.
I know this video was made 3 years ago but did you ever figure out the issue? If so, what was it?
yes the camshaft bushing was worn causing a loss of tension on the timing belt.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE got it makes sense! Did you ever fix it and sell it?
no the cost to fix was not worth the selling price.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE ah sorry it didn't go as planned
Any chance it can be the valve gap
I wish it was but not here.
There is no tentioner, the belt has lost its tightness and needs a new one. and if the belt was good the unit will over heat and stop unless you remove the muffler
I wasted money and got a new muffler but still over heated
Works good without a muffler but it's hella loud
really, I'll have to look at the muffler. thanks
How would i fix a echo that wont stay running and when it does it will not reve all the time?ps its a weed whacker
sure, the Carb needs to be replaced, as it seems like the metering diaphragm inside it, isn't controlling the fuel flow thru it .
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE i checked it it seems fine the bulb it wont suck up the gas
either the bulb won't suck up fuel, or theres a blockage in the Carb, that doing the same thing.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE ok i will look
hi, great video as always! Could the issue the wrong diaphragm pump gasket (long vs flat nipple?) or something else? thank you!
yes it could be a gasket issue, not the diaphragm.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Thanks! i re-used the old gasket and no more leaks! gasket GC issues i guess!
btw: what is the difference between the two channels you have (both equally enjoyable) but was curious.
How is the carburetor adjustment made on this trimmer?
there is a screw on the top of the carb, in the middle of the axis for the barrel. clockwise for less fuel, counter for more fuel.
Mine starts just when it gets hot then dies let cool it’s fine ?
interesting, how much time would you say it takes before it gets hot enough and it dies?

quite possibly
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE I mean you already knew right when you saw it at 3clock instead of 6 and said but what caused this to happen. literally running 10 of these trimmers hard in factory would have showed them that flaw based on your comments and clearly how often it happens, and the breaking the trimmer into interchangeable parts is a smart move because it kept me with the company when needing to replace my first because I saved little bit only needing new engine and not entire setup.

Why does the belt move?
the support bushing for the camshaft wears causing slack in the belt
I have one of these with all attachments. It just stopped and with all I have invested even to a small tiller for the wife's flower garden, I would like to see what it takes to repair it. Will be watching. Jim
have you taken the top cover off to inspect the timing belt?
That's a serious downgrade from prior models. I have a vintage Ryobi 960r manufactured in the 90s, and it uses push rods not a timing belt. Other than the old engine issues you'd expect with the carburetor and fuel lines, it has never given me any trouble. Oh, and it also has an air filter not a screen.
thank you KJ6EPL for the comment. Yes it's definitely not the same quality as previous models.
