She used fancy English to say south films work because the audience DOESN'T want diverse and evolved storytelling i.e "simple storytelling". Such a joke. The reason South Indian films work is because they are inclusive and evolved beyond all.
Please understand that evolved doesn't mean you go to a foreign location to wear skimpy clothes and dance.
Diversity comes from representing ALL roots of this country's societies. Something Bollywood NEVER does. Just look at films like Super Deluxe, Karnan and Kantaara for examples.
Kalki 2898 AD will be the befitting reply to her. She is always insecure about her own industry.
She's only talking about telugu industry. Telugu movies have not evloved. If you make a movie like great Indian kitchen, kumbalangi nights or premalu in telugu, it'll flop bcuz the audience hasn't evolved that's why telugu directors are only making movies like the family star. The film makers give what the audience want, not what is actually good.

Telugu filmmakers are well known for pure entertainment which reach mass audience like no other films . Seeing comments blah blah about Malayalam and Tamil. First let Tamil , Malayalam film makers deliver a true Pan India film like Baahubali film and then teach Telugu industry on how not to do . Users think that making a film like Baahubali, Pushpa or KGF is easy and can be recreated so let me tell this I will never see a Tamil or Malayalam in my lifetime reaching the grassroots level audiences of PAN India because it is nature or people thee who are averse to integrate with Rest of India

There's no "South" film industry.
I don't know anything about Kannada industry other than Kantara and Kgf. So I won't speak about that.
Telugu films have more in common with bollywood than others. They are larger than life, they are loud, it's an industry filled with nepotism and it's misogynistic and regressive. Hero worship is the core theme there. Cinema is hardly evolving there except the budget. I wish the filmmakers and the star actors take more risks in films. Every film from their major actor feels like it follows the same template. Only Rajamouli who is the best Indian director dares to try something different but then again he is bigger than Telugu now, he himself is a bigger brand than all superstars. Telugu has so much commercial power that it's surprising their films still follow the same template: Hero worshipping, item songs by North heroines, hero saves heroine from rape and kills 1000 villains alone etc.
Tamil has a mix of both larger than life and serious cinemas. It has some problems like Telugu but Tamil industry genuinely produces some of the best films every year. They have the most diverse collection of quality filmmakers available. They can do Periyerum Perumal as well as Maaveran and both can become successful. Tamil films do take serious risks and I like that. Although the Vijay and Rajni films are annoying to me now due to the insane fan worship.
Malayalam is the best industry without a shadow of a doubt. The sheer creativity and quality of films malayalam produces with the limited budget is unbelievable. I would say it's among the best film industries in the world considering the limitations. The malayalam actors and technicians are some of the countries best. There is no star power in malyalam anymore. A superstar film like Vaaliban could flop and a few weeks later a movie like Premalu with young leads could become a blockbuster. Content is the king in malayalam. I wish malayalam industry would have bigger commercial scope than it has now.
I absolutely agree! Malayalam industry is one of the best in the world! Adding a little more to the last , they shud have more commercial scope with keeping skill of conveying the story of a movie in the most organic way!

Somehow the diverse movies in Telugu don't become so popular to reach to other non Telugu audience. The audience of respective industries play a key role in it.

I think mainstream bollywood is simple at heart. Just cuz you spend a lot money, and shoot primarily in rich, urban, even foreign locations, with characters with whom most folks cant relate with, doesnt make you complex. It actually limits you, makes you simple, maybe even a bit stupid. I doubt Rani has seen enough movies from the South. Bollywood is mostly portraying the lives of their own industry people or the rich elite whom they deal with. So much so that they dont even know how to portray grounded stories and characters.
I'm not talking about the 12th fail or movies like that. I'm talking about the movies made by the biggest, richest folks. The folks in the inner circle.

Well, I don't quite understand what Rani means by "simple storytelling".... films in South are generally more in tune with reality and real characters. Okay, I am a Malayali, so will talk with reference to Malayalam films. There is masterful storytelling and great content at heart. That's why films from that region, particularly Malayalam cinema excels in every sense. I was expecting a better answer from Rani, since she is a Bengali and Bengal was at one point the cradle of amazing cinema in India. They are known for their great creativity, talent, etc. Here Rani sounds more Bollywood than ever.
To be fair enough, Hindi cinema was perhaps very interesting in the late 1970s and early 80s when off beat cinema gained prominence as opposed to the mainstream. Amol Palekar, Naseeruddin Shah, Farooq Shaikh, Deepti Naval, etc who were all part of that kind of cinema that depicted the lives of real-life characters, not some demi-gods and larger than life heroes.
I used to think malaylam industry is best till before covid. But once I start watching English or other language web series or movies from other countries... I got to know about the malaylam industry. They simply copy from some Spanish or some unknown language movies which most of the Indians don't watch. And then they tag themself they are best industry in India. Some what bangali movies are original i feel, but malaylam film stores, most of them are copied.
All industries are interconnected in India each other bro. But success of Tollywood is sticking to it Indian roots like Sanskrit and sanskruti.
Get some directors from south & make some wholesome entertainers
South movies are helping Bollywood to be better ..there is nothing Bollywood is capable of offering..

Telugu films are meant for low class majdoors from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. There are 300 million of them. That's the mass audience. Malayalam movies are classy films meant for people with refined tastes.

Again, Rani Mukherjee elitism shows again. She thought so much to say that Film Industry in south still makes dumb movies that she kept saying Simple Storytelling and somehow Hindi Cinema is making complex movies with complex storytelling and whatever Evolved Cinema is. Bullshit, Hindi has good cinema but they just forgot to make good emotional action dramas or thrillers and they starved the Hindi moviegoers of the same. They kept making only urban films or foreign location films constantly copying and only making rotten love stories based in infedility and sex. All languages in the South still yearn for good action dramas or thrillers that found space with Hindi audience. Also Hindi movies are always against Hindus showing Hindu symbols in negative light which led to losing their audience. Look how Bramashthra faked just using that meaningless introduction piece with cartoon sages doing something to get simply weapons and then again somehow the weapon on its own becoming more powerful than the GOD with ability destroy universe and they campaigned it to be Indian and based on our culture. They lied, they wanted to make Dragon based on some Iranian Rumi ideology and sold it to us as Indian and thatswhy through out the movie no reverence to any of our Bhagwans and went Shiva wants to maximize or control his powers, and Noone in the movie invokes our Devi Devathas for any of our weapons. Simply look at Baahubali, it was a story of the past and meaningfully celebrated our Hindu cultural symbols, there was nothing frivolous about it.
