MATT GOODWIN: How the Graduate Visa Scheme is Destroying the UK Economy
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 сер 2024
- In this clip from BBC Politics Live, I explore the broken state of the UK's university funding model and the flawed graduate visa scheme. Universities are increasingly reliant on international students to plug financial gaps, but this approach is unsustainable and damaging to our economy. Many of these international students, often from non-elite institutions, end up in low-wage, low-skill jobs, contributing less to the economy than expected.
The current system has turned into a Ponzi scheme, with an endless influx of students from countries like Nigeria, India, and Pakistan. This influx is not benefiting the UK, as these students frequently stay beyond their intended period, bringing relatives and adding pressure to our already strained resources. Our GDP per head remains weak because we're not focusing on high-skilled, high-wage jobs.
Subscribe to my substack at www.mattgoodwi... for an in-depth analysis of how we can reform the higher education system to better serve British students and our economy. It's time to address the real issues and make tough decisions.

Jo Coburn is impartial.
@@eightiesmusic1984 Really !!!
It doesn’t matter at this stage he’s gone in 6 weeks anyway🤣
Thank you Matt for caring , not many do care about us these days.
You held your own 👏
And thanks Matt for all you're doing for us.
What twisting facts a fueling lies of his Putin loving paymaster
What "soft power" is that woman talking about? Seem to me we are a laughing stock internationally and this only advertises us a soft belly target for chancers.
Soft power, indoctrination and pushing 'the message'.
She’s talking utter bs. Probably from the University of Grimsby or Grimthorpe.
“Soft power” is part of the idea that by having foreign students come to the UK to study, when they go back to their home countries, they will have a positive bias towards the UK. The idea is that life will be easier for the UK if people around the world like our country, because they used to study here, so they have a familiarity with our country. They won’t view the UK as just another random country, they will view us as a “friend” because of their time at university here. So that makes international politics and international business easier, because influential people around the world are already familiar with the UK, because they once studied here.
Labour BS used to undermine everything.
Get used to it for the next few years as everything continues to get worse.
Exactly, pakistan for example seems to provide no help in extraditing their foreign nationals, despite us giving them tonnes of aid etc. Soft power is a lie.
I only ever see the BBC on social media and they never fail to make me want to vomit. Kudos to you Matt for having a stronger stomach than me.
Not for our kids, only for foreigners then give them ur homes
Matt, you totally owned this. Your style is non-threatening, intelligent, and based. You would be excellent in Reform.
I have just completed a one year MA and saw first hand this kind of scam. Student X was hardly able to speak English, required constant support from staff and other students, plagiarised, and then played the mental health card. He has now brought wide and child over and extended his visa thank you very much.
Very true its been happening for many years this student visa scam they shouldn't be allowed to bring there family.
Who is the Conservative mp?
And this panel support the thousands of bogus students.
Some students from Nigeria now trying to get UK to pay for their courses.
Don't worry, there's now an army of taxpayer-funded interpreters to help out. My girlfriend is studying to be a nurse & one of her assignments was to visit a health centre in Sheffield. This centre had 58 interpreters on their books....guess who's paying for them?
@@cardroid8615 There are no conservative MPs are there?
This woman seems to take it for granted that we are educating foreign students to service the UK instead of expecting them to return to their countries with their skills.
And the ones that stay send billions in remittances back to their home countries
They send billions to their country you think.is it free? Your citizens can't do the type of work they do. They help you grow your economy.
@@yinkadearemuwe can't seem to make our continent prosper yet we come here and tell the British people we are growing their economy. They create the jobs and we come and take them that is not helping to grow their economy is it???, if we were so good at creating jobs in Africa we wouldn't leave in the first place. We are incapable of growing ours let alone another people.

The BBC host (sorry, i cany name her because i stopped watching years ago) really pushing back hard on Matt, not at all on the other 3. So, not just 'asking the tough questions', naked bias.
Matt is 100% correct. the Politicians just want to drag out any reforms until they fade away.
British Universities should exist for the British peoples. If their existence depends on foreigners, then they should be cut off of any taxpayers money.
Cut down I think 🤔 yep. With all these hateful muslims. You live by the White British peoples lands they are in. It's not theirs. It's White country
Exactly
It depends on foreigners because our governments have made them un affordable for us
Hilarious, Mr Ali has to waffle about the right wing as prompting criticism of mass immigration. No sir, immigration is a subject a majority of this country are concerned with, a majority who tend to be at the bottom end of the pecking order, and are thus most affected. We are not all farrrr right fanatics, just right in expecting that our concerns and needs are being ignored by those who, generally, can afford to be complacent about said subject. Because such fortunate folk, living as they do in their nice, comfy, safe bubbles, tend to remain unaffected by the huge downside of unrestricted immigration. Oh, and a note to Mr Ali, all aspects of our lives are being impacted by immigration. From infrastructure, including of course housing, decently paid employment and training opportunities, the availability of school places, access to medical services, all are failing as they cope with the demands from a growing population. And never mind the negative effects on our social cohesion by allowing in millions who share neither our culture or our values. I doubt Mr Ali, so keen to talk up the supposed advantages of immigration, has ever looked on it from the other side.
The top American universities are the same.
My god 4 against 1…. BBC at its best. Well done Matt for showing them the truth.
Just like the run up to the Brexit referendum.
It's usually 4 against 0 on the MSM when it comes to this dogmatic agenda.
They were no match for Matt though.

Immigrations DOES make a BIG different to this country .
No more ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
Remember BREXIT? Yeah, that Brexit, how well has it aged. Now it's "immigration" that is the cause of all the problems of the lower class Britons. Think for yourselves for once instead of swallowing up whatever the bandwagon crew is dishing out.
Well, Matt, I am a graduate visa holder who'd paid 3x more in tuition fees than the average Brit. I have no dependents or access to public funds. I work, I pay taxes and I am Rishi's grand plan to fund the NHS I don't use. I pay my own rent and energy bills. What exactly am I taking out of your country that I haven't put in?
Don't mind these self centered people that move around the world destabilizing and creating colonies and now you don't want them. What were thier ancestors doing in those countries if not searching for wealth?. I just can't stand the British pride and guilt
They are not ready to hear this. They think we are here for free.
They are in their eco chamber blinded by bias, they will not hear the facts that contradicts their view. Just to add, our visa condition specifically mentions no access to public funds, while we are double taxed with ihs and ni on top of all other charges just hear total bs like this

What? You don't want more Philistines? :)
" the underlying issue is Conservative Party in 2019 promised Britain a high skilled, controlled immigration policy.
What the Conservative Party delivered was a low skilled, uncontrolled immigration policy. Which is why the Party has lost so many of its 2019 voters. This isn't rocket sceince. "
100% correct
University is no longer a place where people go to learn, they are no longer gatekeepers of meritocracy (if they ever were really). They are producers, producing a product for consumers that expect to receive their product with as little hassle as possible.
My wife sees this as a lecturer in a minor university.
Well said matt all true this is another scam its way to come in the uk and why have the students family come too. While the student pays for the course who pays for the family and its not helping the uk.
What about the effect on housing costs for poor British people? The immigration numbers no way make up for the poverty created by the competition for housing. The only people who benefit from this are the rich.
Matt Goodwin only person with a brain including the host, who has the magical touch of cutting him off, when they don't like what he says
We need LESS students going to Universities ! Germany has 24% students going to Uni, we have almost 50% of students going to Uni !
Piss heads on shite courses half of them ! Was shocked the other day 3 or 4 19yr old lads in my local, and Wow they were Plumbing and heating apprentices, they wanted a trade !!! Which we don't have enough young people doing !
And Germany is a much better educated and more productive country. Not all universities deserve to continue in existence.
They never had polytechnics turned into Universities. The requirements to get into University in Germany is extremely high. They also don't have a load of BS waste of space degrees
That is a bit debatable since Germany has something called Fachhochschule which would be an University by British standards but are marked as technical schools due to the name.
@@SolomonSunder Technical schools produce skills that equate to UK apprenticeships, we need more of these !
As an indian i have been planing to come Uk for my further studies but after seeing hates of natives in comment section am afraid to come..💀
Study in India then!
@Yes, it is true it’s better to study in India then in the UK. I am a student in UK from India and I still regret my decision of coming here, paying 20k for tuition, 2k for VISA and then around 8k for a year’s rent is really not worth it. Getting a minimum pay job is not enough to sustain and good paying jobs are non existent in this country as majority of the investment have gone out for Economic failure, people are UK are happy with minimum paying job and have no intention of doing high paying job as well, and on other hand India might be a developing country but there are more opportunities there than UK. UK was a developed country and now going towards underdevelopment for these anti immigration mindset, these people like that we come here for free and we don’t contribute to there economy, but if they could calculate they would understand how much loss of resources they will face and your NHS will fully collapse if we immigrate decide not to come here. Anyway I am going back to India after I complete my useless degree here in UK and many people are as graduate visa is actually of no use to us. Enjoy your downfall as a country. cheers
Quite right Matt
The BIG Claim is that students contribute £41.9 billion to the UK economy . What they don’t tell you it’s over FOUR years. For each person entering the UK is &16.5k per permanent resident per year, pers person pro rata. That’s to maintain current appalling standards of service provision. Chuck in relatives that need hospitals , GP’s , roads , school places etc and it is not a rosey picture . She talks about” business models “. Theirs is privatised profit and socialised losses paid by the taxpayer
The more of these Degree Mills that go bust the better.
Shut down the ones no needed
It’s a breath of fresh air to listen to Matt who is actually truthful about the way our education system should be working. IMO at the moment many foreign students use useless universities as a way into the country and they never have any intentions to study for a degree,
Uk universities don’t work for uk students. Like Matt said, the graduate premium is falling. Do a STEM qualification in the uk - plough in 60k + , and enter an economy with a large,y moribund high tech sector. Do a STEM degree in Germany, pay maybe 200 euros a year in tuition fees, then move into an economy with a dynamic high tech sector….
UK is just not getting the gist
Thanks Matt. Would be good if the panel listened
You can bet your bottom dollar that the rest all have a financial stake in keeping the unwanteds coming
Immigrants from Asia typically bring in all extended family members too, this is what is destroying the social welfare system.
And they never leave
😂 What do you mean we take out more than we bring in ?
1) We pay double the tuition fees.
2) We pay for our visa and NHS before we enter the UK.
3) Then for a graduate visa, we pay the NHS fees, we pay the Visa fees and then we look for jobs.
4) We can't and we are not claiming any benefits, if I get sick I need to ring a doctor back in my country. When I called your NHS for a friend of mine who collapsed and was unconscious for a couple of minutes do you know what they told me " Is he awake can he speak" I told them "Yes he can speak but he is disoriented and can't stand on his own". They told me " Oh that's fine he is gonna be fine all he has to do is just lay down on the floor and he is gonna be alright".😒....
We do minimum-skilled jobs part-time during studies because we don't want to spend our parents money on top of all the double fees and charges we have already paid.
So What do you mean we take out more?😂😂
Then DONT COME! No one has forced you. And you are NOT representative of the thousands of scam students using these visas to get into the country, pretend to study for a few months, bring their economically inactive families and never leave. Britain is not a free for all for the world.
They just don't want you here.
1. Where are you from? Is it a culturally compatible country?
2. Are you financially self sufficient or do you require government support?
3. Do you genuinely fulfil a need in a shortage area?
4. Do you like Britain and its culture or do you want to turn it into a mini version of your homeland?
5. Are you intending to stay or go home?
6. Do you intend to bring lots of economically inactive dependents with you?
7. Did you arrive legally, semi-legally (ie abusing the student visa system to get into the country), or illegally?
Your answers will determine whether you are a source of British anger about immigration or not. If you are incapable of distinguishing between discontent with mass, unskilled, culturally incompatible, economically non-beneficial, potentially hostile immigration and ‘normal’ immigration at ‘normal’ levels then I would suggest you might not be compatible.

Matt go educate yourself about the contribution of international students in the UK. I work in a research lab in the UK, 90% of my team were international students and most are on £60K+ paying loads of tax and without any recourse to public funds so I don’t get it: We pay for everything, NHS, exorbitant visa fees and school fees.
They are the minority. There has been a massive number of scam student visas fished out by fish ‘universities’ as a way to get people into the country who have no intention of studying, or leaving.
That last line was killer. The Tory looked like he was going to have a stroke.
Well said Matt. Sad it falls on deaf ears of the panel.
So 4 pro mass migration people against 1 anti mass migration pro British person
If coming to the UK as a student you do not need to bring your whole family with you. I see nothing wrong with international students but they go home if they don't attend the course. They should pay for their own course, their own interpreters and health costs, it should not come down to foreign students having free access to everything here. The UK needs to invest in training UK youths to ensure our future in trade and industry.
It’s not free.. research before talking 😓, these uneducated people 🙂
@@lifeisanexcitingjourney5534 You are living in your own little bubble if you think foreign students pay for everything. Do your research, you seem ignorant of the facts of the true cost of foreign student programmes to the tax payer and the insidious drain on UK services.
it's all about replacement
Skilled controlled migration is a good thing, speaking as one who pays a good amount of taxes
Uncontrolled unskilled migration is horrible for everyone and puts pressures on services

Well said Matt. He’s always correct.
How do you put up with these idiots Matt.
This whole debacle started with Thatcher who seemed oblivious to a need to have mechanics and carpenters and plumbers, etc. Our local polytechnic was converted to a University chasing white collar education and now we're flooded with foreign students and have had to change basic things like roads, etc because these students don't even know how to cross the road. Polys were created for a reason... we need to get back to that.
Lord help us, Labour will be the next government...
I’m British and in 2023 my first research proposal got misled by Professor Doris Schetizki and Dr Hazel Messenger from London Metropolitan University. Then in 2024 my second research proposal got rejected by the admission office. Also I-was accepted for a PhD in finance by Imperial College but for some reasons they stopped communicating with me. I am an evidence of the universities ganged up against me.
Matt would make a brilliant PM.
The amount of foreign students I've met in the last 3 years who've said they are doing masters degrees while barely being able to speak basic English has blown my mind. Mostly Nigerians.....

I'd say it's a reasonable tradeoff if you've got plenty of available housing around the university. But it's not a good deal if there's already a housing shortage in the local area.
How can there be an honest debate about a problem that needs solving with people who have a vested interest in not solving the problem?
I’m international student. I don’t think UK universities have low standards. But my colleagues are paying for assignments outside and getting degrees. Then earning and sending money back to their countries. System is broken.
This country is being hollowed out so they can retire early back home. The alternative is what we had in the 1960s. We have a bloated state handicapping the country. Also too many people who talk for a living.
Matt is 100% correct. Young British students pay £9.2k per year while other European countries subsidize undergraduate education. As our young people then have to pay back their loans, we then bring in tens of thousands of foreigners to do masters degrees. These foreigners then get visas to work in Britain and take the jobs which our own people should get. Basically, our young people can’t afford masters degrees. The solution, less universities, more apprenticeships, fewer overseas students, and for once, upskill our own people and reduce unemployment.
This is about something far more important than money .....
Worked with them all monies goes back home.apart from rent money to slum landlords.
She doesn't want Matt Goodwin to tell the truth.
Wow, what a balanced panel. What a clearly unbiased host.
The Beeb at its best. Plenty of form mind, just keep paying the annual fee, or you'll end up in Court. Marvellous. Rinse and repeat.
Foreign visas need more scrutiny and they should not be able to bring family members.
Couldn’t give a flying fig about “Soft Power”. It’s just an excuse used to justify wasteful spending.
Please review the fact. I see that some of you are apparently wrong on the matter. International students are not allowed to claim benefits and pay much more in terms of tuition and fees (including health insurance) compared to home students. Graduate visa only gives international graduates 2-3 years to do whatever jobs and then they will have to get a job with a high enough salary and get approved by their employer to stay (under skilled worker visa, it is an another issue if they use other types of visa after graduate visa). We pay taxes, national insurances, health insurance and cannot receive public funds. How the hell do we take more out of the economy than we put in?
You seem to be thinking from the point if view of coming here with an honourable view to the system. There are a great many that come into the system on some doormat of a university course attend for a little while then grift their way onto the benefit system and the road to citizenship.
My wife see this in her university on the nursing course she teaches at. 600 registered students per term, maybe 500 turn up to exams at the end of term. The names tell all regarding who doesn't turn up.
@@jumblestiltskin1365 and that's is an another matter entirely and you will not see me disagree with what you said. A lot of people came here under student visa to not actually study but work and/or claim asylum and this needs to be tackled through better vetting and better law enforcement.
The issue with this video, however, is that it is trying to overgeneralize most international students and graduates to be burden to society, which is not true.
Also, to get the graduate visa (the topic of this video), an international student must have graduated from the course, hence cannot do what you described.
❤
This is the comment I’ve been looking for. To reiterate your comment, International students pay for everything! So they aren’t taking anything out of the economy really.
It’s mostly mature students that enrol in graduate programs and these people have families. To expect that people should separate from their families for the duration of the course and post study is totally unnecessary. In fact, bringing in dependants is even far more expensive than most people here know. Dependants also cannot claim public funds and pay for everything. Nothing is free for international students please!
Graduate visa only offers 2/3yrs opportunity to gain UK work experience and nothing more. Staying back in the country after then would mean being on a visa that allows the person reside or work in the UK(skilled worker).
Matt 💯 ❤
He is partly correct about the abuse of the system and universities which should not exist.
However, making less than median wage does not mean they are taking more out of the system than contributing to it.
As always, someone who understands the issue is ignored whilst others are busy virtue signaling
Most people come on student visas as just to get in uk with no intention of studying then they try to find a British citizen to marry and stay
The same way your grandparents came and took more from these countries
Bring back technical colleges and polytechnics. When my daughter graduated in law there were about 20 graduates. When the business degree graduated there were 200+ I bet many don't work in business post degree
