Thanks Blackie. Great tips to help me restore an old canteen to a safe condition. As usual, you’re a great site to have the helpful tips. Best to you from WNC
i got an old boy scout canteen of ebay. Great condition, still had the buttons and button clasps on it, still had the fabric, still original emblem on it, not that rusted, only problem is that the scout that had it had spit his sunflower seed shells into it and let it sit for years. i got to cleaning it out with dish soap and salt water just to get the main saliva and seed out. For main cleaning for it, this was really useful. Now its back to its original form. I dont want to let the old Boy Scout stuff rot away, Its time to put it back in use, the old scout garrison caps, use em, old berets, use em, i love to use the boy scout canteen because the boy scouts now just make cheap clear plastic canteens!
Surgitate (sp) is my new favorite word! haha! Great tip. I do about the same thing to a couple old percolators I'm not ready to give up. Thanks Blackie!
Great tip and one that I needed! Thanks! That canteen is the shape of the old style bed warmers, boil up some water in it, wrap it in some non artificial fibre clothes/blanket/towel ect. so you don't get burnt, stick it in your sleeping bag/bedroll on a cold night. Hot water bottle!
Hey blacky, i am collecting canteens of interest, and i got this ww2 stainless steel one that i'm refurbishing, but the inside has a slightly tacky film in it, i've tried the salt method, a-jax, and boiling water, but it wont come out. any ideas?
I know this is an old post, but if you're still interested, you can buy a 20lb bag of gravel at Wal Mart for about five bucks. Three or four good handfuls of that, about a teaspoon of Barkeeper's friend, and about 1/2 a cup of hot water. Shake the heck out of it in all different directions for twenty minutes or so. Rinse and check. You may have to repeat a few times, but I have made some really crusty ones look brand-new with this method. Give 'er a shot and let me know! 😊
yes but you would have to be very careful it is aluminum and thus the seams would melt if you allowed it to get too hot..you could bring it to a boil in the embers and once it has boiled remove it from the fire..as long as canteen was full it should be fine
go to a auto parts store and get sheet of 600 or so grit wet dry sandpaper. using water take a small strip of the paper fold in half and use the folded edge (sandpaper grit side) to trace the threads around on the cap in short polish it. Next take a small strip and wet and use you fingertip to go in hole and polish the inside of the canteen neck should not take but a few minutes then rinse out the canteen really well a little plain chap stick can be rubbed on the cap thread to keep it from binding
never ought salt used bleach and sand before that works the same concept love them old canteens had the two qt .but busted the seem stay safe brother g.a.w is on so let me know
i've worked in the coffee and tea industry. We had steel alloy tea urns (used by every restaurant that serves tea) and we were told to not use bleach because it would eat out some of the alloy "members" and create small holes in the urn. I've heard that it could have a similar affect on aluminum cups, plates, canteens, ect....Just something to consider.

Also, you can fill it almost full of cold water and freeze it to get the dents out...
I almost threw mine away, thank you for this video!!!

Would alcohol be okay instead of water? I feel like you’d get more abrasion from the salt as it doesn’t dissolve in water.
Good advise. Can u boil in it like someone asked are said. Thanks. Atb Brian.

Do you have a good way of cleaning up the threads on the cap and spout so it turns more easily?

Can you use just a cup of salt to clean it out?
Good tip! Thanks
So this would work with the pathfinder canteen as well??

John Chandler thanks John didn't think it would eat into the soft alum . I'll keep that I. mind thanks
Will this clean rust out of it
I have black spots on the bottom of my old Soviet canteen and I think it might be black mold
a salt and warm water scrub should take care of that
