Just because Adam is under lockdown, doesn't mean he's stopped building! In fact, quite the contrary: Adam is busier than ever working on new builds and shop improvement projects. This is the first in a series of One Day Builds that Adam has filmed himself from the cave, upgrading the infrastructure around his lathe by organizing his many chucks and live centers. It's a fun woodworking project that takes his mobile camera rig all around the workshop--hope you enjoy it!

Adam Savage’s Tested Using a pair of wide, slant-tip tweezers usually works a treat for removing the backing from tape. They’re sharp enough to tear through the backing, but not sharp enough to pierce the tape itself. Another option is to use a scrap of the sticky side of the tape attached to the end of the backing. This makes a tab that you can use to pull the backing off. Hoping this helps 😄
Nicely edited Joey :) as always
Source for the carpet tape?
And I never thought about even looking for felt with sticky backing, been using the felt cutout and glued, seems so much easier and makes for a cleaner cut.
Looking over those spectacles while using that pin nailer ain't gonna save your eyes if your blow out curls back!
As much as I love the clean and refined version of One Day Builds normally, I also think the chaotic energy of Adam filming this all himself is amazing.
Personally I think they often cut out too much in other some other buildings videos. I really dig these more contiguous vids
There is no pleasing you :/
@@ArabGamesGeeks Both of these comments were compliments of the various styles. The second comment wasn't even a bad thing, he was simply expressing the opinion that he would prefer to see more of the build in the more traditionally edited one day builds.
The editing style also seems more snappy, and even daresay chaotic. I like it. Makes me think of the snappy way he talks to himself XD
@@darksunrise957 As I was watching I kept thinking that the editing reminded me of a tense indie movie.
"Here's hoping this cuts togeth-"
I don't know who the editor was on this video, but they are one of my new favorite people.
Christopher Blair Joey, it's always in the description for future reference!
It was Joey Fameli (was said on discord) and yes I also think the editing is on point! Awesome video!
Yes! The interruption at 6:09 where he says, “...right. Cool. Cool. C...”*tablesaw noises* And also how everything between most of the nail gun firings was edited out. Frigging hilarious to me. For some reason, including random shots with the narrow crown stapler at 22:26 & 22:40 & 22:45. 26:10 “here’s hoping it cuts togethe...”
@@tony2tall170 I think it was Matias Wandel who did that same edit trick for awhile, or maybe Steve Ramsay... I'm loosing track of my woodworking channels...
You should watch This Old Tony. You'll get plenty of awesome editing and all the tools & toolmaking and fabricating that you can stand. It's a great channel. He even has a lathe lol.
Whoever edited this needs a raise! I loved the cuts and the style.
It might me Adam himself
Joey edited it!
The nail gun.
The guy had fun.
If you like this editing style check out This Old Tony. All of his videos are edited like this and he does similar projects. Oh and Ageing wheels is quite similar also.
Whitmeister G on I love TOT and ABOM and AvE
I Love how these videos remain super entertaining even as Adam films it himself on his iphone and uses airpods for microphones. Makes me realise he'd be an awesome content creator/builder even without a crew behind him. It shows you don't need much to do some really cool things. Pure creativity!
He is an absolutely amazing producer.
Adam Savage’s Tested . . . and humble as well.
Shout out to the person who edited the video too, really made the best out of it!
@@-lll-ll-llll-AVE Yes I hope they don't ever change it, it really shows the human side of the engineering process.
@@jamesogorman3287 That obviously wasn't Adam typing that post.
That 2 sec pause at the beginning of the video. Adam's expressions were like "Yes... I know... I know... we are playing with the lathe again."
The editing on this one has some quality chaotic vibes
if it was accidental it'd be called sloppy
but this is adam, of course it's intentional :P
Hehe, I'm digging it though... the usual videos have very high production value and are beautiful, well made, and appealing... but Adam *is* that lovable backyard mad scientist... and this style fit him perfectly.
Bonus point for seeing the shop being used - that inevitable clutter that accumulates as you work on something was good to see... usually its pristine .
Great stuff all-around
Of all of the weird tools I've seen in a workstation around a metal lathe, I think a cast iron skillet has to top them all.
You never know when you're suddenly going to crave a nice juicy steak 🥩
He's probably beating the sh#% out of the lathe every day now, to show it who's the boss!
🤔
My thoughts exactly 🧐
I think its momento from the bullet proof skillet episode I swear they did one
Just as he was measuring out 3 by 4 holes, I thought “don’t forget how big that big one is!” Glad everything fitted!
Did anyone else go back to the beginning near the end when he said he swore he counted 10 and only had 9 to check? I did and there were 10, so I have no clue where the missing one went, hope he finds/found it.
I JUST DID THAT
Also counted 10 so hopefully he found it
Going back i think he counted 10 but included the wrong chuck which at around 25 min mark he moves out the way
I'm somewhat sure he carried it around when that thing caught on the side of the board.. So it'll be near the drill.
@@RhodderzX @1:47 he shows all 10 in one frame so there definitely are 10 lol. I'm sure it turned up eventually.
Says "Observe how I make sure that no part of my bodu is inline with the nailgun..." proceeds to have his hand in line of fire for 2 out of the next 3 nails... LOL;-) TC: 23:14
That and the constantly damaged fingers, now a bandaged one. I've sometimes wondered if his impatience would cause a serious or fatal accident with the machines, but looks like they're happy to slowly whittle him away.
Well he's shooting down inline with the material, so no not necessarily.
I unconsciously yelled "FINGERS!" Right as he lined it up lol.
To me it looks like his hand is at the same height as the nailgun but since he's shooting it diagonally down they wouldn't be in the line of fire.
Mark Land nails from nail guns can travel to the side if they are diffracted by a hard material, such as a knot in hardwood (here plywood isn’t as much of a concern).
If you’re going to make sure you don’t fasten your hand to your workbench, don’t just move it from the nail’s direction by some fraction of an inch ;)
Using a set of wide slant-tip tweezers to remove the backing tape usually works a treat. They’re sharp enough to cut through the backing, but not so much that it tears the tape itself. Another option is to use a scrap piece of the sticky side of the tape and use that as a tab to peel the backing off.
Great tips thanks
@@chasewinkler4679 simply start the unbacking at the start of the roll and clip away a small sliver of the sticky part of the tape. This leaves a handy pull tab on the backing material to allow you to quickly and painlessly unback the tape you're applying to your project, and when you get to the end of that particular measurement just make the cut like normal to the sticky part of the tape and then make a separate cut to the backing to preserve the pull tab.
Most of the time, when I use double-sided tape from a roll I'm usually unbacking as I go with the roll just hanging from my application site.
Matthew Lofton I do the same thing with a roll of aluminum foil tape I have.
@@matthewlofton8465 Thanks for taking the time to explain. I'm actually looking forward to my next project with it to try this out. No more cursing at tape for me!
Hi Adam, I am loving the rawness and intimate nature of these videos (at the same time, kudos to your editor!). It feels like you are just a friend next door sharing his very relatable challenges and solutions. I love how the design evolved over the course of the build. Thank you. That was a simple, but at the same time - awesome, one day build.
Ps. If you would stay safe, when you stay inside we, the audience would like that. 😉
20:05 "These are the videos where I cut my head off" DO NOT say that when your working on the lathe that ate your finger!
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who thought this lol
I still cringe when i see his finger and the story behind it. Especially when he almost "lost" his bandage at 11:17 what was kind of funny but at the same time not.
Just here to echo my adoration for some of the FANTASTIC jump cuts of editing playfulness! I honestly laughed out loud at the narrow headed stapler sequences. Splicing out of sequence staple hits into his speech, also genius. Definitely open to more playful editing like this. It was a surprise delight after watching so many of Tested videos. Thanks and kudos to the editor. Bravo
Is it just me or did anyone else think when they saw what the title was. "Whatever you do Adam *PLEASE* don't shred your finger on the lathe again!"
Right Here!!
Yup
lol , i thought he was going to make a foot pedal emergency stop
69 nice
@@nocturnalnarrator1893 Eh? 69 nice? What's that meant to mean? 😕
(It better not be what I think it is 😑)
Is it weird that I wanna hang with you more since I started watching Tested about 5 years ago than I ever did while watching you on Mythbusters? Opening up your hobbies, expertise, and heart just made me relate more to you than I ever did watching Mythbusters.
This felt so personal and inviting this video! I love it!
First of all, hell yes the backing tape thing is a curse all too real, happy to hear it's not just me. Second of all, these videos are so much better filmed now that you don't yourself, no weird angles missing all the action, no weird focus and honestly a static camera gets the job done so well!
That editing, though. Someone’s been watching This Old Tony, and I daresay even some Aging Wheels?
I'm getting strong Monty Python vibes.
Every time I see Adam's dro I look for something funny written on the screen, than I realise I'm not watching TOT 🤣
Sam Skellern Totally!
Exactly my thoughts, it's only missing some magic tricks for cutting stock materials!
I was just thinking the same thing. The nailer was all AW and the smash cuts mid sentence was straight TOT
-i love the edit cuts for whenever Adam uses the nail guns, pretty visually pleasing
-honestly, i super get you, i spent hours re-organizing my workspaces for art programs, & I'm still doing that for Clip Studio
Have to admit
Adam: Today I'll be working on my lathe.
Me: *Worried*
It's really enjoyable to watch a guy happy in his workshop, always love these videos finding solutions to make life even more pleasant in a tight space. Thanks for sharing and you yourself stay safe 🙏❤️
When I remove back from VHB, I use the point of an exacto blade and stab the backing at an angle and flick straight up. Usually pops the backing right off.
Big brain is just using children't safety scissors to leave a nice ragged edge. I did something like 50, 1" strips recently in a place nobody would see it.
The biggest difference between Adam and other people's maker channels is the genuiness and level of excitment he has for all the little things he does, purely joyful like from a little kid we all once were.
The lathe: How many times do we gotta teach you old man?"
This maybe my favorite yet! The ordered chaos, amplified by some fine editing. It's soul soothing to realise it's the same as when most of us try our hand at making something.
One day builds with Adam:
10% nail gun
10% working on bussines end
80% hiding crimes
Hiding crimes is a big part of being a maker. lol
I’m a big fan of Adam but my god is he butchering that thing together. Almost as if he was doing it extra so he could hide that crimes. But then he didn’t. I know it’s just shop infrastructure but hey...
@@kshatriya1414 There are tearouts and misalignments all over the place. The bottoms are perforated with pin nails. Again, I love him and I get that it's not an art piece, but if it was me I would like to have it nice, even when it's shop infrastructure.
@@prottentogo I have to agree...he's a pretty sloppy maker overall. Most of the stuff he makes is not very well put together or even sturdy for that matter.
LOL nice one
Love the feel of this video! The edit was was fun and helped play on the fact that this isn't a "normal" one day build. Adam has often talked about feeling guilty about building without someone filming, this is the answer. If you ask me, "Adam Savage's One Day Builds" just released a pilot to it's spin off "An Afternoon Building With Adam"
14:44 Hammering Tape - That made my day!
Do as he says, not as he dose and maybe breath less crap too.
The endless fun (work) I could have (do) in that shop... I love organization and being good at many crafts. I would surely be making something all the time.
Can determine when the video was done by observing "the finger" 😄
Sophie Phillips 😂😂
Hi, Adam, to your question about removing the backing on vhb or other similar.
I'm a sign artist and have been dealing with this problem for years.
There are 2 tricks which are best done simultaneously. Trick 1 is to pull the backing quickly, in this way it will let go more easily. Trick 2 is twofold depending on your preference.
One, take an exacto knife and pierce the corner, then flick upward quickly, or two, use another piece of tape to adhere to the backer and again, pull it quickly. Make sure the tape used is sticky enough.
If it's giving me a lot of trouble, I will sometimes push the exacto knife under the backing and twist it quickly.
Let me know if any of these work for you 🙂
By the status of Adam's fingers you can determine when a video was filmed.
This checks out.
@@tested LOL! The Makers version of carbon dating - the injury progression check off.
Also if he's still wearing the earbuds or not 😉
Yep, size of the lathe-injury bandage goes back to 'how black is that one fingernail'... I get lost before that but it lets us order things chronologically for a couple months at least. :)
Would be great if he cleaned his fingernails. There's no single video where he hasn't got dirt behind them.
He's the mad scientist of making, and I love it. All I do is sew and knit, but this man inspires me more than any of those craft-specific channels.
23:00
Adam: I’m making sure that no part of my body is inline with the staples
Also Adam: proceeds to put hand in the way
I noticed that as well.
I like how it looks like a giant wooden cheese grater! I also love the last few seconds of a tidying-up time-lapse, just showing that after all is done, it's an important part of a workshop! Plus it shows Adam's dog (which needs more airtime!)
18:40 "Ahh, I love poor servants"
- Adam, probably, according to auto captions
cheekoli I saw that and immediately came searching the comments. 🤦🏻♂️🤣
He’s probably a fan of Downton Abbey
Adam Savage is my spirit animal.
The secret to removing backing tape is to use a piece of tape! Tape the corner, and pull.
Hey Adam, I use VHB & adhesive backed paper covered stuff at work all the time. If it's something that squishes like VHB, I find that massaging a corner between thumb and forefinger will bring up an edge that can be got with a nail, no razor required.
I've also found that a slicing motion with a not-quite-sharp-but-not-quite-dull, nickless(!) blade, like somewhere between an 'I use my knife as a deburring tool for steel' and 'I run it over 1000 grit every few months' sharp, works excellently for separating the tape from the tape-tape. Counter intuitively better than a sharp knife, which I feel is because it doesn't snag on the VHB if you overshoot.
"Carpet tape; some of the most tenacious crap I have ever used."

Oh we need a t-shirt...
Hi Adam! I just wanna thank you for churning out so much content to get me through these days. Your videos are a silver lining to living in a social isolation.
"I always make sure no part of my body is in line with the nail gun..."
Immediately places hand in line with nail gun.
Thank you Adam for filming during this mess. I really appreciate being able to hang out in the shop with you the last couple weeks!

How have I never thought to store the chuck key in the drill's chuck before?
Exactly, I saw this and was wondering why I never did that. Going to do that from now on.
I think you have to lose a certain number of chuck keys (Hundreds by my estimation) to figure it out on your own. 😂
@@Bakamoichigei Chuck keys are almost as bad as 10mm sockets.
@@rooster68w how the crap do you know. I seriously have 3 10mm and 3 15mm because of this very fact.
@@Bakamoichigei "lose" is too strong of a word here. All that needs to happen is your toolbox/workbench gets roughly handled (ie, an earthquake, a co-worker [or you] knock it over, you try to move it carefully to avoid having to pack and unpack everything constantly, etc) and your stuff goes everywhere.
Great job filming yourself Adam! It can be a lot more challenging than most people think it is.
9:00 ummm Adam I’m pretty sure you got your felt cut mixed up
Edit: It happens to the best of us :) Great video as always!
I have to say, watching with the generated subtitles leads to some interesting results. Sometime they're ahead of the speach and show up some 10 sec before Adam says the line. Other times you get gems like Adam saying "I love forstner bits" but gets subtitles as "I love poor servants". Fantastic
I'd like a "favorite tools" on that cast iron pan next to the lathe..
Ya see, the cast iron pan is a machinists most beloved tool-one of the few tools in a shop that are truly multipurpose and of artisanal quality. It's a fixed circle measure, a pattern weight, an even-dispersal heat shield, and, dare I say-a weapon. Fabricate one, and you won't be disappointed.
Adam,
I am interested to know if you realize how awesome you are. Informative, so positive, just outstanding! I really appreciate the videos through these crazy times.
18:40 : I LOVE REFRIGERATORS.
Turn on captions when he says that
Omg im dieing!!! Lmao
VHB tape backing trick - never cut the tape and backing at the same time. Just pull the backing, cut the tape, and leave the backing alone. You'll then have a long ribbon of backing hanging off the roll, which you can trim back when it gets out of control.
"Cool, cool, c... CZHCZHHCHHCHHCHHHHH" 6:13
This is easily the most therapeutic channel for creatives to watch during quarantine. Thank you Adam 🤘
Office Space: "What would you do if you had a million dollars?"
Me: This.
Adam you should do a shop tour it’d help us kinda know how your shop flows and gives us who watch so much be built in here a better idea of what it looks like.
Look at Mr. Fancy pants who still has his Chuck key. Those buggers are almost as bad as 10mm sockets.
Wow I love that top down camera view of your whole shop. Looks so much cooler then from a normal first person veiw point.
I NEED to know why that skillet is there.
Seven Sins all I can think of is that it might be a chip and oil tray for under where the lathe is cutting. Not a great option. I use a large baking tray but that sits under the whole lathe. Maybe this is for between the material and the bed.
Same
Paullyb79 that's what I used as well. That skillet seems like an unruly replacement.
Come on guys, you've never gotten hungry and fried something up on the bunsen burner? 😂
@@peteluis2849 Ha! No, but I might now just for lolz.
I can't be the only one enjoying the really-simple-production of these videos during lockdown (and I can't quite put my finger on why?). I DO mean that as a compliment!
How s your finger healing, Everytime I imagine the wound ,got goosebumps...
If you have a workshop you have a world to run around in. Glad the holder didn't go on the side of the tailstock, hand slips off tailstock feed handle, wrist down, centres up. Love the videos.
I see him use all these nailing guns. I wait for the day he accidentally grabs the penny gun and tries to staple stuff with cut pennies.
That was very satisfying to watch. I especially enjoyed Adam getting excited about forstner bits.
The humbling part is that even experienced people like Adam got hurt in the shop if not careful. Never take saftey lightly
Well, every day in Adam’s cave is an accident waiting to happen. See how close his hair is to a spinning drill press at 9:26 - I didn’t even have to leave this video to find an example.
I knew a professional woodworker who used to hang over every piece of equipment that he got hurt on the hospital wristband that he 'earned' as a reminder.
It's funny but experienced people often hurt themselves because they get too comfortable with the machines
@@CAMSLAYER13 Yes - in fact I’m quite sure it’s the most common cause for accidents. I think Adam even talked about this recently.
So many cuts on the table saw that could be done with a guard in place, but no guard... (some cuts can't have a guard, and that is what it is, but when you're just making normal through cuts, put the guard back on!)
I love the editing in this video. There's a wonderful humor in hard cutting to adam just hitting the tape with a hammer, and then a moment later, hitting the new holder with a hammer.
How many people paused to check "The finger" when the cover was off?
I did.. it looks pretty bad
Time?
ONE MORE THING ADAM KEEP UP THESE ONE DAY BUILDS THEY REMIND ME OF WHEN MY GRANDPA WOULD BUILD STUFF IN HIS SHOP WHEN I WAS LITTLE THIS IS AWESOME AND NEEDS TO KEEP GOING
Adam, what button down / shirt jacket is that your wearing?
I too really want to know what shirt this is. I think I need it asap!
jakelaxfreak12jm Me toooo!
A cradle on top of the tail stock works really well as a temporary (single) rack for a live center. Keep doing what you do!
“No part of my body ever in line with the staple” ..... puts hand in front of stapler*
I think some of that was the angle of the video.
For your problem with the liner of the adhesive tape, there is a nice tool called „top sheet cutter“. I used one from „olfa“ at work, worked pretty well for me, fairly inexpensive, maybe worth a shot. Stay healthy, greetings from germany, and keep the builds coming👍
Hey Adam as a fellow hand injury sufferer/specialist I recommend getting some 1" gauze rolls for finger injuries.
Glad to know the "classic mistake" happens to even the best of us. I can say, definitely been there and done that but definitely not our last..
Cheers!

Thanks Adam. I enjoyed watching you work. You have a great spirit that's a pleasure to be around.
I love the different video editing styles on Adam's channel. I don't think I've seen any edits by Joey before this one, but this feels like it was thrown together by Adam from start to finish. The nail gun time lapse around 18:25 was my favourite. Made me smile. (I do wish Adam's sentences weren't cut off so frequently though.) And I have to say, Gunther is an artist with his edits. I love how clean and smooth his videos turn out, but I especially love the ASMR-esque parts. Watching Adam build and just hearing him work, listening to the tools, is so meditative and sweet for me. Love it. Keep it up, team :)
Thank you Adam (& editor)!!
Edition is just fantastic! Pin nails shots mixed with the narration looks (and sounds) just great!!
It's great to see that you don't need a film crew to make quality content. Keep them coming!
22:22 to 22:54 is my favorite part thank you to whoever edited this!
Someone must have been bored. The editing on this. Holy. :) Glad to see you so excited Adam, it really makes my day.
Whoever edited this is a genius. Im loving the cuts of rapid nailing and theres a few moments where the camera seems to cut at just the right moment to make the scene funnier to me. Kudos.
Thanks Adam and everyone at Tested for keeping us entertained during these crazy times, I find your vids not only informative but also relaxing.
Got to say... I really, really like this low tech version of one day builds! 👌
Hey Adam, you asked if there was a secret to removing the backing off of VHB. Well I use VHB on the daily for work, (I’m a sign maker for a FastSigns here in Arizona) anyways when removing the backing use your X-Acto knife and slide it between the tape and the backing once there flick up with your knife and the tape will give!
You are one of my favorite humans. Thank you for being.
As a low budget youtuber it's refreshing to see someone I look up to having the same recording issues I have. You can either concentrate on the work, on the recording or do a half job of both.I also like these builds when you wing it and do the problem solving along the way. Is your finger is constantly getting in the way ?
I absolutely LOVE the desire to create in these times. You are truly a beautiful human being :D
Adam, thank you so much for your effort putting together those videos!!!
Loved it. I would have given it a shot of clear, myself, but...? Question: have you ever considered making a life size Adam Savage carrying case/box for yourself? Sort of a borg alcove that slopes back for your cave? That would be completely impractical but I'm sure you could add some storage functions. You could open your show with its clear lid opening.
Too much? Oh well, I've been distancing too.
Thank you, this was great -- working both sides of the camera, improving the shop, and ending with a big smile. Stay safe!
Adam can you show us how you made your pool ball handles for the mill/ lathe? They look awesome and seem more ergonomic than most handles / controls. Love what you are doing and also which you the best for you and your family to stay heathy. I am in North Dakota so we do not have the same population density , however we are all in the same fight and will prosper through this pandemic. Work on!!!!;)
I love the editing in this video. The quick jumps between actions, camera angles, etc feel very playful. It's a little Diresta, a little This Old Tony and 100% Adam.
18:23 Editor, you deserve a raise for this! So satisfying!
It was lovely seeing Adam sweeping up at the end. He should do a video on his shop housekeeping skills.
The best kind of lockdown video from arguably the nicest youtuber working. Thanks Adam.
I love this video format. Very raw, and just feels awesome. I like the refined ones too, but I love this much more
That was very nice to watch! The editing was 👌🏻Minty! That nail gun rapid fire was also minty AF. Love it
I really loved the energy of this video, it felt so authentic and personable. Can't wait for more Adam!
