  • In this video we test run a Husqvarna 120i battery powered chainsaw. Battery powered equipment becomes more and more popular by the month and it of course raises mny questions from people who are interested in the products but do not know how well they will work or even if they will work. So if you've been wondering about the 120i from Husqvarna, here is your chance to see one in action. These saws can be purchased in a kit that comes with BLi20 battery and QC80 charger. The BLi 20 battery is a 4 amp/hr battery so it produces a decent run time. You also have the option to purchase a higher amp hour battery seperately if you are looking to get even more run time between charges.
    As we point out in the video, the 120i is an easy to use chainsaw that does its job. Yes we know it is not a 562XP, or a CS-590, or a Stihl (Obviously because it starts right away HAHA!!), or a 395XP. This is a saw that is easy to use and easy to maintenance. The combination of low operating cost and low cost of ownership over the life of the saw make it a great investment. We know that there are still diehards out there that refuse to even try battery powered equipment but will tell you how bad it is. The battery powered equipment that is being manufactured these days in light years ahead of the battery powered equipment being produced 20, 10, and even 5 years ago. Technology keeps advancing and allowing these products to improve by leaps and bounds year after year. Remember years ago when a few companies made battery powered (cordless) drills? Many people complained that the batteries didn't last and that they didn't have the speed or torque of the corded electric versions. Then before we know it everyone in the tool game is making battery powered drills of all shapes and sizes and we are buying them and using without even thinking about how they compare to the old corded versions. If you haven't noticed, that is the point we are at today in regards to battery powered outdoor power equipment. Take a walk through a hardware store, home improvement store, your local mower dealer, or even just google chainsaw, or leaf blower, or trimmer and see how many brands of battery powered equipment you see. This is no different than what happened all those years ago with cordless drills. There is some really good quality battery powered equipment out there and until you try it for yourself you will not realize how well it actually works.

    We picked up one of these and a 320iB and they have been AWESOME! We have bigger saws and backpack blowers, but the battery powered stuff is just so easy to use. We use the blower for cleaning off the porch and this 120i is great for taking along camping to cut firewood without a lot of noise.

    1st informative review I found, great for us newbies and you provided useful details. First review I watched seemed like the guy got beat up and his wife taken by a husqvarna sales rep. I'm glad I kept looking and thanks for the safety info.

    I think the 120i is a great option for anyone that doesn't use a chainsaw regularly.

      It looks better than that. Why is everyone selling this saw short? Is this saw truly not capable of home use for firewood acquisition? I use my Makita for load after load. I've cut over 15 -20 cord this winter using only batteries. The wood is currently in a huge split pile and difficult to estimate right now. Battery saws are an option for cutting firewood. It takes 500 to 600 watt hours of energy per pickup load. Just have enough batteries. For the Husky, buy the backpack.

    Would be perfect for arborists in cities with strict noise bylaws .. plus would seem safer than a idling gas powered saw too .. i imagine keeping chain sharp will produce more life out of battery

    Battery Power

  • @geraldmoore6257
    @geraldmoore6257 5 років тому +1

    You claimed the saw was “direct drive.” A simple search of the parts diagram reveals that it has a gear box. Most gas units are direct drive. The only electric saw that I’m aware of that is direct drive is Makita. They use an outer rotor motor to achieve the necessary torque.
    What’s with the “eco” setting? Is that to substitute for a variable speed trigger? Wouldn’t using lower power for longer periods still be about the same power consumption as fast cutting for short times? I've found full speed when limbing is better as the chain catches and grabs at small limbs when running low chain speed.
    That 4Ah battery is at the very low end of saw batteries. 150 watt hours won’t cut very much. You better have 4 batteries if your going to cut a pickup load of 18” firewood. Good quality saw overall.

    • @EshlemaniaTV
      @EshlemaniaTV  5 років тому

      The 120i does have a gear box but there is no clutch or any other type of mechanism involved that could cause slipping or the chain to not engage when activating the saw.
      In some instances the eco setting is not as useful as others. When cutting up wood on the ground it can prolong the run time. But in the limbing example as you mentioned, full speed is definitely better to use because the faster chain speed helps keep the chain from getting pinched. This is the case any saw when the weight transfers in the piece being cut.
      As far as the battery, this is what comes in the kit. You can purchase other batteries for this saw with higher run times. But if you're looking to cut a load of wood like you mentioned with a battery powered saw then you should probably be looking into the 536 rather than the 120i. The 120i is a good saw for occasional use and lawn clean up, but not really meant to be cutting load after load of firewood.

    • @geraldmoore6257
      @geraldmoore6257 5 років тому

      I checked out the 536 Li XP on Amazon. That is a pro-grade top handle tree trimming saw. Not good for bucking firewood. If you climb and limb trees professionally it sounds OK. The 120i looks better for bucking. I would use it over that top handle model.
      The bigger point is that all Husky saws use the same 36V battery. The highest capacity I can find is 4Ah or 150Wh. Direct me to one with "higher run time," if you can. 150Wh is really low compared to other models. It would seem me that if you want to cut firewood you need the backpack BLi520X with 520 watt hours. This would be cheaper than buying multiple 4Ah units. The backpack costs around 5 or 6 hundred.
      Watt hours is work. No matter the saw, the brand or the max power output (speed of cutting). Physics dictates that you are not going to cut very much wood with 150 Wh. I typically consume between 500 and 600 watt hours (as indicated by metering during recharge) when cutting a pickup load. This amounts to two battery swaps (3 sets of batteries) @216Wh per swap. I seldom need to drain the last set. I use my Makita XCU03 with 16” bar to cut load after load of firewood and it does fine. The 120i looks about the same size and weight and should be just as good. It looks like high quality saw, don’t sell it short.
      Edit: Correct me if I'm wrong, but all electrics, corded or battery, do not employ a clutch. Direct drive means no gear box. Also, am I thinking correctly that using a lower power, i.e. cutting slower, on large wood would not save much battery energy over cutting faster over a shorter period. I'm still a little puzzled about calling the a low power output mode "economy" implying that it would save battery. Sure the saw will run longer, but you will obviously cut less wood per unit time. Explain.

      The T536LiXP is a top handle saw. The 535iXP (536LiXP) is a regular rear handled saw

      @EshlemaniaTV  5 років тому

      They make much bigger batteries than just the 4.0 Ah. The Bli 300 is a good battery if you want a longer run time in a saw or leaf blower. It is a 9.0 Ah battery. But I will warn you it has a hefty price tag compared to the consumer grade batteries like the Bli20

    • @geraldmoore6257
      @geraldmoore6257 5 років тому

      Thank you, I thought they should have higher cap batteries. The Bli300 didn't show up for me in mulitiple google searches for Husqvarna batteries. I still can't find it on Amazon, even with a direct search. Now that's a more reasonable run time. Over 300Wh is more typical and actually on the high end. You could cut a pickup load with two of those.
      Top handle saws aren't designed for bucking, but you can use them for that. You recommended it for bucking firewood, indicating that it would be a better choice.
      As far as cost goes, I would go with the backpack, it may be actually cheaper per watt-hour and (I think, correct me here.) takes most of the weight off the saw (right?). The pro top handle saw is ghastly expensive, but I wasn't getting into cost. If someone is worried about cost, a gas chainsaw is way cheaper. It's the batteries that makes electric high cost. I already had plenty of batteries for a bunch of Makita platform tools. If someone is investing in Husqvarna stuff, they may already have the 4Ah batteries. They will want to go with the 9Ah or the backpack.
      Oh, good review, by the way. And thanks again for your help.

    How many cuts will it make on one battery? On say a 8" log?

    • @EshlemaniaTV
      @EshlemaniaTV  5 років тому +2

      We made between 15 and 20 cuts on this one battery and it still had plenty of juice left when we put it in a 32o leaf blower to clean up some saw dust.

    The batteries always come uncharged with one bar lit up. It takes two hours to charge the bli20 battery THAT'S SLOW! What you should have mentioned which is more important is that the bli10 battery that looks exactly the same will NOT fit into this chain saw even though it comes with and works with the telescopic long reach pole chain saw because of a little tab on the battery.

      Electric is the future. Cars, Trucks, 18 wheelers are all on the road already and some will be self driving this year, really and truly. Many are already self driving but insurance wise they will be actually, legally self driving very soon. There's at least one neighborhood in Atlanta (Peachtree Corners) that already has a completely unmanned electric shuttle service that runs on the actual road with other cars. In a pretty busy area.
      The future is here, and it's low emissions.
      Look up Goodenough glass if you're interested - that's likely the next evolution and it's here, minus the manufacturing infrastructure. It's from the same guy that invented the original lithium ion battery. Also computer RAM. It's totally futuristic, and manufacturing takes almost no mining, mostly just sand (literally glass).
      Pretty wild huh?
      Oh, and gas or diesel motors do not hold even a dim candle to electric motor capabilities. No competition.
