I feel like this video would be stronger if you quote some sources. I don't quite understand how games could have this many opinions expressed about them on the record before the internet existed.
That's because there are no sources for the things here. I think he is taking some opinions of modern times, as well as possibly some critiques of the game, and treating them like people were up in arms over these things and lead to "discussions".
Video game magazines were a thing. So there are actually varied opinions on retro games documented. At the time there really wasn't any controversy around it though.
@@dichromaticb3c Video game magazines, especially in the 90s, rarely expressed any of the sort of socio-cultural opinions he discusses in this video. Video games in general were not often discussed in the mainstream media unless they were extraordinarily controversial. I would be extremely curious where he got the notion that Kid Clown was very controversial, for instance.
@JJMcCullough No, they touched on more than you may imagine/recall. I was a kid and could tell you who Lieberman was for example. Though the controversial games of the day were the ones everybody knows about. Not obscure titles like EarthBound.
Earthbound came with the guide. That's why it came in the giant box, and it also was a factor for the higher price point. Granted another factor was the physical cart type and size. Pretty sure there were other games that had a higher than retail price point though they were rare and didn't include a guide.
In Drakken if you take off the female characters armor you will see some "extras". Not sure why that is never mentioned in videos when this game comes up.
The only real controversial games from the SNES i can recall were Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II. Mind there was always issues with preparing games to be sold in the west not just translation but the occasional need to adjust things to make sense to players in a given market. Also sometimes there was some censorship down on imagery due to sensibilities in a market ( more to keep parents from getting upset than cause players would have issues.) to make it safe for store issues. As for games that use a product mascot Chester Cheetah wasn't alone but his game was easily the worst. Earthbound was always a strange game as was the entire series it came from.
With Breath of Fire II, I would have assumed that people would have had a hissy fit about the character Spar, who is very non-binary, because plant-person.
I remember seeing some people get upset about Popoi from Secret of Mana for the same thing because they were a mythical elf-type character who was never given a gender.
I never thought you needed a guide to get the most out of Earthbound. That said, the ad campaign for the game was bizarre, and not something that would entice many to buy it.
@@the-NightStar The primary ad I remember was in magazines like Nintendo Power with a splash page ad that proudly claimed "This game stinks". With no context given, as I recall. That is... not a good way to convince kids to they need the game.
Nintendo Power had scratch and sniff in the magazine as well, but I couldn't smell it because I have congenital anosmia(inability to smell scents from birth) in the issue that was promoting "EarthBound"…
it would be nice if you added some examples of what you meant instead of just putting b roll footage on the screen that has nothing to do with the point you're making
The U.S. snes is such an ugly design compared to the cute version we got in Europe, i never got over that. Even de blocky cartridges lack our charming moonshaped games. The Y and X concave buttons on the U.S. controllers might be a nice touch to it, but i dont really know the purpose for them🤷♂️ Still prefere the colourfull buttons anyday.

The net was available during the lifespan of snes.

Thank goodness for uncensored/faithful fan translation patches. Thanks to that, we can experience the Mother trilogy in its original intended way.

With Earthbound, you didn't have to buy the guide. It came packaged with the game.
Castlevania IV was not controversial. It was and still is loved.

I NEVER needed the guide to beat Earthbound. But I was already a JRPG veteran by the time it came out.
Boy, if they were upset about cheetos just think what they thought of chex quest!
Or Cool Spot
Chex Quest was good, i thought. It certainly was the best cereal box inclusion side from garfield on a skateboard circa laye 1980s
@@NearLife4lifeI really liked the figures of the tailspin characters from fruit loops boxes
A lot of the info this guy gives is made up..
Cool Spot was another SNES game that was an ad for a product (7-up) but it was a decent game to rent.
Big ups to Zombies Ate My Neighbors!
I personally think ZAMN has the highest replay value for a multiplayer game on snes not made by Nintendo.
This makes me appreciate the fact that Tanooki Mario in Super Mario Bros. 3 transforms so much more.
The Pocky & Rocky games were so underrated
0:51 Pocky and Rocky sounds a lot like Touhou to me
With Breath of Fire II, I would have assumed that people would have had a hissy fit about the character Spar, who is very non-binary, because plant-person.
Or a hermaphrodite.

100% convinced your making all of this up. Lmao. Just like the last video. I mean, I’m still watching them, but only because it makes me laugh.
I know drakken was brutal back in the day but i did almost beat it without a guide

Pockey and Rocky looks amazing!
Without this game, Touhou probably wouldn't exist.
Both of them were amazing!!
It's a classic, as well as the sequel. The first one was also remastered a couple years ago.
Complete nonsense.
Please post a link to where you got that info on Chester cheetah cause its not the first product placement game by far...
8:10 Oh hey, it's Goujon John! :D
How dare you use this cheap cheetah ploy to sell Cheetos! I sir will be playing Cool Spot the 7-Up game. 😂

Love your content!! Keep up the amazing work!! GOD bless! ❤️🙏🏼💪🏼✌🏼
This is one of the most interesting videos on video games I’ve ever seen and that’s saying a lot! Cool list!
Kweh❤
Nice accent. lol
