    Awesome man. I was first curious to know if your dog just naturally picked this up through fishing time with you? Assuming you did some type of training or guiding, what were the steps you took to get her /he to doing it on her own. I love the idea and would love to start working with mine slowly. Great video

      Thanks man. I've had 3 dogs that do it. The first two I just encouraged, and they'd walk the river fishing with me, spear fishing for carp and regular fishing for trout. Those two just eventually picked up on it, but it took 7-9 years before they were consistently catching fish.

      I started my current dog as a pup, 8 weeks old. I put bait fish in a tin, then moved the tin to the river, then dammed off a pool, and slowly made the pool bigger and put bigger fish in there as he got bigger. He's also been able to watch the dog in this video do it quite a bit, so that helped. This is the dog I really worked with ua-cam.com/video/FDPZ5p1HwHY/v-deo.html
      I also always kinda give them a chance after I've caught a fish. Trout I basically tease them and toss it far enough away they rarely ever get them. We have a lot of invasive fish here, so I give them a better chance with those and let them eat them. (Look up diseases in your area before you do that though there are some nasty ones)
      If I had an older dog I'd do it with a fishing pole. Teach them "Leave it" for when you catch a fish, you don't want them going after fish you hooked, then just give them a chance to re catch it. Mainly you need to show them it's possible and they'll help figure out the strategy, all mine have had a different strat.
      There's a neighbor dog who's been watching us a lot and I saw him out in the river trying to catch his own, so it's definitely doable.

    Good to see you let him eat the fish. Best incentive for catching them. And nothing wrong with it. Good healthy meal (unless of course he's unlucky enough to catch one that was previously hooked and still has the hook in it). A lot of strange dog owners out there who would never let their dog do that.

    • @riverrebel1

      It's funny how weird people can be with what they eat. Dogs became dogs by eating our trash, they can stomach some nasty stuff

      @@riverrebel1 yep, exactly, when I was out in the bush or where ever with my dog and she got thirsty and decided to drink I never once stopped her from drinking from her chosen source. With their nose they can detect, for the most part, what's decent enough for ingesting and, as you suggested, they can stomach just about anything (and if they cant stomach it it comes back out quick enough).

    1:56 For a second I actually started wondering if the dog was running back to shore camp to drop the fish into a 5 gallon bucket, so he could run back to catch more. The first shocking part of the video, where the Lee McFarland dog was noodling, put those crazy thoughts in my head. Anyway as he was heading out, I decided I wasn't going to be surprised.

    • @riverrebel1
      @riverrebel1  3 роки тому +2

      I've got a 3 year old dog that I'm hoping to do that with. Put a bucket out and him put fish in it. This dog just put it on shore to eat it later. I don't know about Lee Mcfarland, can you fill me in? If there's a dog that does it I want to see it

    • @ViralTuber
      @ViralTuber 3 роки тому +1

      @@riverrebel1 That would be amazing if you could teach your 3 year old dog the bucket-drop trick. I'd think the bucket trick is easy compared to having a dog that can fish, lol. I enjoyed how your dog knew what to do (i.e. what you we saying) when you were encouraging it to go fishing. Also the calm methodical technique it showed in accomplishing the task, was impressive. I also watched your "nearly drowns" video, and he was working the bank exactly like a human noodler does, including going under for the grab. You pulled him up, just like a human noodler relies on his buddy to do, lol. I've never noodled, but I've been a fan of watching noodling ever since I became aware of it as a kid. Lee McFarland is one of the most famous noodlers.

      @@ViralTuber I'm glad you appreciated that video it, it's one of my favorites. He'd have rather of drowned then let a fish go. I do remember seeing that guy/documentary before. I've caught plenty of trout, and some bigish carp with just my hands, but a 30-50 lb catfish biting on your fist is nuts!
