작곡가 황병기의 곡으로 서역적인 것과 향토적인 것을 조화시키고, 감각적이고 관능적인 아름다움을 법열의 차원으로 승화시킨 신라 불교미술의 세계를 음악에서 추구한 곡이다. 침향(沈香)은 인도 향기의 이름으로, 침향이 서린 속에서 추는 춤이라는 뜻을 지닌다.
음계는 불교음악인 범패에 기초를 두기 때문에 가야금의 조현이 새로우며, 연주 기교도 새로운 것이 많다. 현재 침향무는 가장 많이 연주되는 곡으로, 가야금독주곡의 백미라 할 수 있겠다.

A groundbreaking work in the field of Korean music, the title roughly translates to “Perfume Dance, with “chimhyang” referring to an Indian perfume, while “mu” means dance. In this work, Hwang surveys the Shilla period of Buddhist art, when an aesthetic sensitivity to beauty was channeled into religious exaltation through the medium of music.
The work calls for a number of performance techniques that were new at the time, including an altered tuning and the use of arpeggios to recall the sound of the ancient East Asian harp, the konghu. Janggu, typically used as an accompanying instrument, also plays a significant role in this composition.
