Tbh, TT feels a lot like a Revoltech this time. Like it looks weird af just standing but comes to life when posed. FT just looks naturally cool, and their clean styling makes him really imposing.
Very interesting versus. When I was going over the categories in my head a couple of days ago I realized the Takara was going to win more categories than I initially thought and your video went the same way. Definitely two well done figures but like you said it comes down to what you want for your collection. For me I want a bot mode that has great presence and paint so the FT will continue to be on my shelf. I love your versus videos cause they point out a lot of things I don’t always pay attention too. Great job Sony!
Takara did a really nice job on this figure. It’s a bummer to me that this is such a surprise. At one time they really delivered, I couldn’t wait for their next release. Now days I don’t even consider their releases to be proper Masterpiece in many cases.
That are really my thoughts on these two interpretations of him, too. Both are really stunning figures. None of them are a mistake. Fits mostly in every opend G1 MP Collection. 👍
Great versus. I was on the fence, having a soft spot for official figures. But I'm going to go FansToys on this one. Maybe if TT does a Hoist, I'll go the official route on that one since I don't care for the chrome legs on the FT version.
Good and fair review. I know you usually prefer FansToys so I appreciate you being able to be honest and fair with these. NOW, to anyone reading this XTB, TT, and FT ALL have good Trailbreaker figures so you can't go wrong with any of them.
I still don't get it why a company like Hasbro /Takara tomy who have owned the property for decades still cannot do a super clean, no hollow, no gaps figure when a 3rd party company who has less resources, finances, less of basically everything as compared to a 6 billion dollar company can do a better more accurate figure for most characters of the transformers line... Just baffling... BTW great review TM!! 👍
Designing a toy is more than just saying "were gonna make it good". Each company has different priorities and diferent sacrifices. Takara is known for sacrificing the Looks for the sake of articulation and vehicles, in the other hand FT aims for a premium build quality and aesthetically pleasing bots so articulation an play-ability are usually an afterthought.
Despite takara’s factories still being in China, they have to abide by Japanese eco production laws as well as having to pay workers legal wages. FT (and all 3P companies) do not have to pay their workers nearly as much and their factories can run outside the standards of “eco-friendly” production
@@palpatine1975Not big companies, companies that operate legally have to follow international laws that all their products has to pass in order to sell that product in said country. Takara Tomy and Hasbro are legit companies while Fans Toys is a Chinese based company. Look at all the 2nd party Transformers, ones officially licensed from Takara Tomy and you'll see that none of them transform. All these 3rd party Transformers, none of which are licensed, all transform and all operate out of China where Takara Tomy can't really touch them. As for this comparison, I actually sold my Fans Toys Outrider and went with the Takara Tomy Trailbreaker as he's way more toon accurate and I like that. His alt mode, is also way better looking, which I think Fans Toys actually doesn't look all that great as I also prefer X-transbots Aegis alt mode over Outrider although I prefer the robot mode of Outrider to Aegis. I sold Aegis for Outrider and now I sold Outrider for Trailbreaker. Don't get me wrong, when Fans Toys goes for toon accuracies, they're top notch but, Outrider isn't anywhere near toon accurate.
I like to think of FT as MP-56 and Takara as MP-56+ since it looks more cartoony in my opinion. I choose Takara since I like the G1 cartoon look that Takara Masterpieces have moved towards in recent years.
I thought of this right at the end when you mentioned keeping Takara in alt mode, but is the paint coverage better in alt mode than it is in bot mode for Takara? Using Takara for an alt mode display makes sense, but if the paint is incomplete like it is in bot mode that could be bad.
My initial intention was to get the mp, but after watching the first videos of the mp that came out, i decided to order the FT. The shoulders and the sides of the mp just dont look good (and are not toon accurate as well). No regret at all. Outrider is the usual top Fanstoys quality. Just compare the chrome on the "canon hand" between the mp and FT in this video. The job on the mp is uneven and looks really cheap, especially when looked from the front. At 3:39 in the video, you can see the lines close to the arm are not equally filled. On the FT it's perfectly applied, all the details and lines are clean and even. Also, one things thats weird, in all the pictures and videos i've seen, the legs and arms of the FT looks white. In fact they are a paler shade of light mat grey with a bit of "metalness". The color is very similar to the arm of the Hunk (aka Brown).
Great review… I would caveat on the articulation/posability front the Takara smashing the FansToys to pieces. It might have similar articulation points as the Takara, but it’s feet are quite loose and it’s torso/backpack is so heavy it makes it super hard to pose. And while the Ft has more paint, it’s very dark, so if you’ve not got great lighting on your display it won’t pop as much as the Takara 😄
I had to use Kiki's on mine as he's either lean back or lean forward as it was way too loose. Kiki's helped but it's still loose. I sold Aegis for Outrider because while I loved Aegis, I absolutely hated the way X-transbots did the shoulders. I then sold Outrider for Trailbreaker as he's way more toon accurate and his color isn't so dark that you can actually see him. You can't see any details in Outrider because of the color, unless you're looking up close at him.
I feel like the Takara looks more accurate from the side for sure, and he's got the more accurate color on the limbs, but the Fantoys' car hood sitting higher on the chest looks more accurate (and better imo).
I'd always go with official over 3rd Party unless either: The official is SOOO far below what can be done atm, or: The official is heavily outdated (like MP11 before MP52 was announced) so I'm looking forward to getting this guy in. Your members choice will always go to FansToys though, even if your viewer base is not 100% FT cultists.. it's probably still 70/30 skewed that way ;)
Excellent video as usual. Love your comparison videos. For future comparison videos, any chance you can do the articulation for the figures at the same time for the same feature? Even if both figures have the same articulation, we can compare the ranges of the particular joint/bend. An example would be how fare the elbows go. If both elbows have the same range. You already do this to a certain extent but if we could see it at the same time, it would give a more comprehensive feel to your vids. Either way, keep the videos coming. You're now my go to reviewer.
If they did a better job with his chest gap, I'd 100% but the Takara Tomy version but, I love paint and premium feeling plastics so I'll buy Fans Toys version of I buy another Trailbreaker. I have the X-transbots version and he's good enough right now with the toon look and very good looking alt mode.
Question if ok - if I was able to go to Tokyo - what would be the recommendation for brand/place? Both brands are super hard to get where I am. Thanks!
One thing I'd like to note us while the $190 USD was the initial price of FT, it has come down at several retailers and can be found w/in 10-20 of the TT price if not closer.
@@TMReviews I have zero issue with the score. Review was totally above board. I just wanted to mention the new, overall lower price on Outrider since that could be more of a factor now than just MSRP vs. MSRP
This might not be a very popular video idea, but consider comparing the various minifigures that come with the various toys, like MP-10 Spike, WeiJiang's MPP-10 Spike, MP-47 Hound Spike, MP (can't remember the number) Tracks Raoul, etc. etc., compare their scales, how they look next to various Autobots and Decepticons in both modes, stuff like that. Who knows, maybe it'd be a big hit.
You can get Outrider for 150 on ShowZ but I get that you compared US prices. Outrider is just better in every way but maybe alt mode. I did enjoy playing with my TT trailbreaker but Outrider is the definitive version to me
I think both have their pluses and minuses and are overall pretty close. Basically it's TT for articulation and FT for heft and premium feel. I will say that I really hate handling FT figures because of all the oil they use. My hands get oily after handling FT figures and I really hate that. No amount of wiping with damp paper towel gets rid of all the oil on the surfaces. It's to the point that after I get FT Jazz, I might be done buying Fans Toys.
I think showing “members choice” is nice but should not be allotted a point. All your categories are as objective as possible and come from you handling both figures. Including a completely subjective category from voters who most likely do not have both (if either) and are judging from pictures and videos alone skews your results. If you’re striving for an objective comparison, this inconsistency takes away from that.
Scrolling a few comments and seeing people call it a tie reflects how in this close battle, what I’m saying would change things. It’s *subjectively* a tie, and *objectively* a win for TT.
Very well done comparison Sony...if only the TT would have the Paint and Feel. TT should had this out 18 months ago, then would had sold so much more. Now that the FTs and XTBs toon are both in circ it's hard to be a winning 3rd leg. I have to give TT credit though for outdoing FTs and XTB for super Toon.
I've looked at hilux's form the 80's. I do not recall the mirrors on the hood like that. Only seen the standard side mirrors or the wider taller "camper/big truck" style. But both are in the normal spot.
I definitely prefer the Fans Toys. Pretty much every category Takara wins in are less important to me. I really don't like the unpainted parts on Takara, especially the flat grey parts that connect to his shoulder weapons. Makes it look a bit cheap. This is one of the very few that I will grab the KO version of Takara for the alt mode, while Outrider will be on my shelf in bot mode. As always Sony, thank-you for the comparison. i know they take a good amount of time to put together. Have a fantastic day.
So if the way the front of the truck sits at an angle is accurate to the animation model...then that means every single toy form of Trailbreaker (and possibly Hoist, too) before Takara's MP56 Trailbreaker straight up got it wrong...but sitting at an angle like that just looks disturbingly fugly when you're accustomed to it going straight downward.
I agree the chest sitting at an angle like that looks horrible, but it looks like that image I showed So I guess I prefer the way fans toys did it even though it's not accurate
I have the X-transbots Aegis, and it really is a good figure (in both modes); that’s why I decided not to get either the Fanstoys or theTakara version.
F.y.i. all u have to do to engage the arm joint is move the arm up to the 90 degree angle which will allow the joint to work...it's there but it doesn't work until the arm is raised
You do the best verses vedios. Even better than Booby Bonehead. I'll be honest, Outrider stole my heart. Don't care about the official. I pre-ordered the KO of the official and not the Outrider because I can't afford it. I might end up putting the KO back unless they fix the official's hollow chest from the side. It probably isn't as bad in person but it looks cheap, the whole official figure looks cheaply made to me. FansToys looks like a statute as always.
Outrider is definitely Fans Toys' best figure to date, in my opinion. Had they managed to incorporate the doors into the backpack or torso, they could've pulled off the Takara shoulder design. The price is (was) also a high point relative to their other offerings.
This kinda shakes out exactly how I suspected it would. I know nobody will do it at this point because why bother, but I would love to see a comparison with the TT and XTB.
I hear you, several people asked me for that but the xtb already lost to FT so it would be a moot point to compare here since it would probably lose even more
@@TMReviews For sure, I just meant like I'd like to see that comparison without FT being a factor. But again, literally nobody would ever do that at this point because the XTB is so unnecessary to consider now.
The accessories and cost doesn’t really much different to me, so FT still wins imo. I’m waiting for the MP price to get lower now or even if there will be a good KO in the future which is very possible😊 I will get the MP, just not atm
You know what has a lot of articulation? A pipe cleaner. That TT is such a gappy, doofy mess, with weird proportions and ugly paint. To me it's a very posable eyesore with gimmicks very few will use. XTB hasn’t gotten much love with their trailbreaker when it comes to comparisons. People just kinda forgot about it Think it’s still a great piece. Knees are a little weak is all
I did a comparison with XTB and FT, it lost in that comparison and I sold it so I didn't have it available here, still a decent figure but not the one I prefer
Great comparison as always Sonny. Takara's offering looks and probably feels like a $80 figure. Fanstoys has created a whole different class of Masterpiece and Takara isn't in that class. Diecast, ABS plastic, premium paint, articulation and feel, now transformations? I have and like many of their pieces, though only KOs because I think the price is fair, but Takara needs to stop their game up or dramatically drop their prices.

I have and like many of their pieces, though only KOs because I think the price is fair, but Takara needs to stop their game up or dramatically drop their prices.
Thanks
