Lalvunga Zai (Lalvunga's Song) This song was a tune that Lalvunga used to sing when he was the ruling chief at Farzawl. There were other tunes like "Chai Hla" which is not to be cofused with this. The Chai Hla was a song that his enemies song of condescension towards him after his defeat. This particular tune was a song that was composed during his reign. The song is a testimony of his ravishing charm and dashing looks as he wore the Dartawnsûk (an accessory that resembled the tail of a bird used to adorn a head gear); it is a song that glorifies his chieftainship. It is not a song sung in its entirety. Historical songs of old like this can still be heard towards the East of the land of the Hualngo Elders.
Bawh Hla (Song of Triumph) Kei chu e, ka sêntêt an,Sa leh doral ka pianpui e Ka do ve, rimnam pa e, Thangchem e,Aiki miti ulaw. Bawh Hla is the song that the warriors would sing after taking the head of a rival clansman, and Hla do is a song that is sung on the day that a feral animal is hunted. The song proclaims that the singer was born not only to be skilled at hunting game, but also a proficient head hunter. It talks about how the severed head whose stench reeked throughout the village is a trophy of his conquest, a prize that he won with the help of his "Thangchem" (a machete used for head hunting). The song is a testimony of his triumph. No other warrior except the killer of the enemy may chant Bawh Hla.
Dar Hla (Gong Song) The compositional significance of this song lies with the use of three Mizo Dar (Gong), all tuned to different intervals of the major scale- Aw Pui (Do or the I), Aw Lai (Re or the II) and Aw Te (Mi or the III). This 3 note melody is used in Mizo folksongs to narrate stories to the masses; and can be heard in many different iterations. Chawngvungi, in Mizo Folklore was one of the most beautiful girls in the land who was under the spell of Sawngkhara's dawi Zawlaidi (Love Potion), and this song talks about the absurdities of her dowry. Her mother demanded Dar Huai (Gong of the Brave), a prized gong that could ring harmoniously on its own, considered too valuable to be demanded as bride price for Chawngvungi's hand in marriage. She was obliged and subsequently given her demands. Due to the breaking of tradition when the Dar Huai was handed over to Chawngvungi's mother, a series of consequential events occured which resulted in the death of Chawnvungi. Subsequently, Chawngvungi's mother and her in laws sang a song of lamentation which has been immortalized through the 3 note melody Gong song.
Ngunte Ṭhi (Ngunte Necklace) There is not much to talk about with regards to the Ngunte Ṭhi. However the contents of this song essentially speak about how this necklace and the fabled Liando Dar could be the property of the singer. The literal translation of the song is as follows: "The Ngunte Necklace and the fabled Liando Dar can both be mine. If the Khuavang (fairy) exists they will bless my future, and all the land as far as the eye can see shall soon be mine."
Liando te unau (The brothers Liando and Tuaisiala) The Story of Liandoa and his brother Tuaisiala is one of the 3 note melody folk songs sung as Dar hla. In the story, the brothers find prized gongs in the belly of a snake. This is a rags to riches kind of story, and the unlikely find takes the brothers out of impoverishment. The song sings about how the brothers would play these gongs in secrecy, and how the village folk would ask them what kind of gongs they were playing to which the brothers would respond with "Dar zeng mah kan tum love, Liando bur chhe te kan tum, kan tum" which means "there is no gong which you speak of, all that we're playing is the broken Liando gourd."
Aikhiangi Zai (Chai Hla/Festive Folk song) Aikhiangi Zai is one of the last festive folk songs to be composed and is estimated to have been written sometime in the 1830s. Aikhiangi was said to have lived in either Sateek or Aithawl Village. She married Lianngova of Tachhip Village. They were together for only a night before Lianngova unfortunately met his end at the battle of Tumpangsial. A weeping Aikhiangi made her way to her Husband's familial home, and as she climbed on the 'kaiten' (tribal staircase leading to the entrance of the house), she sang a song of lamentation which according to hearsay, states that all who heard her song cried and wept with her.
Thiam Hla (Song of Blessing) During ancient religious ceremonies, the priest would recite this song as he prepares the sacrificial animals for the rituals. The Creator- Siamtu Bulpui 'Sa' was given a sacrifice of a pig, and the Protector- 'Khua min enkawltu' was given the sacrifice of a Gayal (Mithun). This sacrifice is then prepared as a feast of prestige for the attendees who are known as Chawngnu and Chawngpa (the worthy ones), in order to appease the vankhua mipui (inhabitants of heaven). This song is also an incantation that gives blessing of children, long life, good harvest, victory in battle and hunting, and it gives blessing so that one may be a Chawngnu and Chawngpa, and also so that they may become Zawhzazo (one who has completed all the obligations of the Mizo Pagan faith). In order to solidify the prayer, the song invokes the ancestors, the founder of ancient mizo religion, Hualthana, and also asks for all that has been left out and any mistakes in the prayer to be answered as well.
Tlang Au (Public announcement by the Chief's messenger) Public announcements were made by the Chief's messenger whenever there was important news. In this instance, the Chief has invited all the village folk to Lammual field for the Chapchar kut Festival.
Liando te Unau Thawnthu (Story of the brothers Liandoa and Tuaisiala) This song narrates the story of Liandoa and Tuaisiala, who were left orphaned after their mother eloped to remarry.

This public announcement is made to let the people know that Liandoa will be hosting a feast, so the Chief is telling everyone to prepare for the grand festivity.
Sanghal Hla Do (Song of the Boar) This song is sung by a hunter who declares to the entire village that he has shot a Boar so magnificent, and whose tusks are so white that he can claim the title of a great hunter, one whose honor is solidified with the shot that killed the beast.

Wow! First of all, this video really makes me proud as a Mizo. I'm so blessed to be born as a Mizo.
Totally mesmerising to watch-
1) Firstly and above all, a very big 👍 up for keeping the lyrics in English (and Mizo as well). Though looking casual, but this has set it to another level by giving exposure to the whole world and as a documentary. And yes, what a huge vocabulary! A big hats-off to the guys who're working on to this!
2) The lyric is so elegant- Old is Gold. This MV has been a masterpiece and has set foot firm (in my honest opinion) that it'll become an asset the older it gets! All those traditional words 'hlarua'! It's unbelievable on how you guys are able to pull the strings together!
It's a shame to say from my part but my humble request is let's keep it 'Mizo' when we want to say the people of Mizo, and not 'Mizos'. We're not 'Mizos' but 'Mizo', it doesn't matter if we use English or some kind of language. 'Mizo' is 'Mizo'.
3) Totally applaud on how you guys are able to mix up the traditional musical instruments along with the most modern ones. The hip-hop part is nailed perfectly by G'nie (as expected) with some great & powerful lines and rhymes!
4) Sound mixing is great. The music is not too harsh nor too soft. Some may say that it's too hard! But I say we need that kind of a bit robust feel to wake up our emotion. It has accompanied the lyric greatly.
5) Lastly but not the least, totally loved the presentation! Dunno if this was done in a same place/studio, but it's done perfectly! Has depicted the story of the lyric crystal clear in a very simple way and the models/actors did it professionally.
Lest not forget the 'Liando Dâr' of brotherhood, tlâwmngaihna & hmangaihna among ourselves. Blessings do come on the way if we act humanely.
