  • Here is a quick video showing the process of restoring a classic steam whistle to like new condition.
The Virginia and Truckee has been a huge supporter of the Rizzoli Locomotive Works and we thought it only right to make sure we took care of their whistle.

Several years back, I ran a wood-burning 1914 Russell 75 hp steam traction engine that someone had mounted a big Northern Pacific 5-chime on (if I remember right, one of the owner's relatives had been an engineer for NP back in the day). So, I'm sitting there running stationary and this little kid, about kindergarten age comes up and starts going, "Toot toot? Toot toot?" and pumping his fist in the air, obviously wanting me to blow the whistle for him. I go, "Okay!" The kid's mom is like, "Oh, look, honey! He's gonna blow it for you!" The kid leans forward, face all aglow with excitement, I toot that 5-chime twice, he jumps about a foot in the air and instantly bursts into tears! Guess it was a lot louder than he was expecting, LOL. 😂

I'm 79 and I got to blow the whistle on a steam locomotive...once. The memory of that brief moment still brings a smile to my face. At steam thresher shows, some traction engines are equipped with a locomotive whistle. They sound wonderful!

THAT! That's the kind of whistle I look for. Something close to sierra railroad no. 3, yet something that could standout on it's own if in a film or game....a northern pacific five chime eh?.....sounds as proud as a eagle.

"Whistles have echoed through the town ever since."
Except between 2001 and 2008 when the V&T used nothing but diesels, all GE center-cabs.

That's when the Robert C. Gray was out of service for a 1472 Day Inspection, and EXTENSIVE damage was found in the firebox, and the necessary repairs to the firebox took some time, much like on Sierra 28.

I have a design for a 3-chime medium bell step-top top-lever whistle that I would like build sometime. Its design is similar to that of a Southern Railway 3 chime whistle, with the only difference being the chamber lengths. Chambers are 7 1/4 inches, 9 3/4 inches, and 11 3/8 inches. It is based on the Rebel Railroad’s southern 3 chime.
I am wondering how much it would cost to have it made.

Do you guys have a video of this whistle only while the locomotive is stationary and no bell ringing in the background at all?

Upper part Northern Pacific, lower part Southern Pacific ~ just needs something from the Western & Atlantic.
