Banjo-Tooie 100% TAS

- This is a tool assisted speedrun demonstration of Banjo Tooie 100% in 3:40:53 from power on to final collectable.
For the purpose of this (and all other real-time) speedrun, 100% is defined as getting all collectables on the totals screen for a single file: notes, jiggies, pages, honeycombs, moves, standard glowbos, and jinjos. The final boss Hag1 must also be defeated, but not necessarily at the end of the run. Stop n Swap items and the Mega Glowbo are not on the totals screen, and so are not required.
This run uses a "clean cartridge" ruleset, meaning there can't be any unlockables or save data on the cartridge at the start of the run. Real time runs on speedrun.com do not use this ruleset, and warp to the final boss fairly early in the run using a glitch with the replay menu, saving them 12+ minutes over if they started without pre-unlocks. Clean cart is the default standard in the TAS community, and one I personally believe is a better representation of "beating a game as fast as possible" (if you have to do hours of setup before you start your timer, then that isn't as fast as possible).
The emulator used for this run, BizHawk, has its share of problems running this game. The most obvious is the occasional sound glitchiness, for this run most notably in Pine Grove and in the Western Zone in WitchyWorld. But also all loading zones take longer than they would on console, costing a lot of time over an N64 run. On the flip side, the game is somewhat less laggy on emulator, so its hard to say if it is overall faster or slower. Because of the inaccurate lag emulation, optimizing for lag reduction wasn't a priority for this run.
This was originally going to be classified as LOTAD (Low Optimized Tool Assisted Demonstration), but 300k rerecords later that classification felt inaccurate. Just as much care was put into saving time as any of the other runs people call TASes for this series, even if improvements are likely possible.
Just like all other Banjo tool assisted demos since 2020, this run utilizes position microrounding codes to make the various ground clips easier. These clips are possible without them, but their otherworldly precision (to a millionth of banjo's normal movement distance in a frame), means attempting to do all 100+ of them manually would have added years to the production of this for no visible difference in the run. Between that and splicing some segments together to fix some emulation audio bugs, this isn't a "true" TAS in the sense that it is a single input file that could be submitted to TASVideos. But from a video perspective it should be completely indistinguishable from what a "true" TAS would look like.
For an in-depth on bit clips (the ground clips), see this great video: • Banjo-Kazooie - Bitcli...
The route changed a lot over the production of this, as new tricks and ideas got found. The biggest change that should have been made in retrospect would be to remove the solo section at 1:15:15 and instead do most of that in the next visit at 3:14:10, which could save 10-20 seconds. At the time of writing this, all other known minor route improvements, such as moving the cliff top jinjo to a different point, would save less than 5 seconds combined.
Some really weird stuff happens 3h21m into the run onwards. This is all to get the textbox at 3h26m50s, which is an important trigger to set up for the glitch at 3h28m20s.
This run was done entirely by myself, RingRush. However, I stand on the shoulders of giants...and normal sized people, and probably some short people. FalconXFalcon/pjii's 100% RTAs and Hyperresonance/KaptainKohl's 70 jiggy TAS were both great references to make sure I wasn't missing optimal strategies. Kohl, Hyper, and dango_v_starfish helped check over my work when routing this run, and the glitches and tech for this run that I didn't find were found by the8bitbeast, kohl, hyper, Cronikeys, Exchord, KlydeStorm and probably many more. 8bit, isotarge, ThatCowGuy, and pfedak also helped with some of the scripts that were invaluable in planning this run and discovering more tricks. - Ігри
Apologies for slightly buggy audio from 14:55-15:30, 20:45-22:40, and 24:15-29:05 - BizHawk's emulation of this game just does weird things sometimes.
Don't blame BizHawk, Rareware put these games together with quick glue and duct tape.
I am sure most lines in the source code end with //DON'T CHANGE THIS LINE; GAME WILL BREAK;
Makes it even more awesome that their games were that great. Talented minds, pressured by a deadline and given limited resources tend to create amazing things.

There are few things I enjoy more than watching Canary Mary get absolutely blasted by thousands of frame-perfect A-presses.
2:30:59
It was even more beautiful than I could have imagined
It's comical how the game instantly invalidates any kind of time saved by making you watch Mary fly her glacial ass all the way through the rest of the course.
45:13 as well as 46:55.
Getting third hand whiplash from the camera towards the end.
It’s not even a time save, since we need to watch her finish the race in real time. The TASer just really, really wanted to absolutely decimate her.
45:12 -- this part is so funny to me, banjo breaks the sound barrier with a minecart, then there's 10,000,000,000 years of unaltered footage of a bird trying to catch up
"That's weird, why skip all this stuff early game? What are they rushing towards?"
"Ah, clockwork eggs. That checks out"
Great and entertaining TAS. Here's an algorithm boosting comment.
45:14 Seeing Banjo go fucking Mach 1 on the pulley cart is ridiculously funny to me, especially with all the camera switches
The slowdown RIGHT at the end of the second GGM race is what killed me
I love the thumbnail directly referencing the DK64 100% TAS lol
Floors are optional in this as walls are in DK64
36:40
Steals Targitzan's jiggy, dies, refuses to elaborate, leaves
Never thought I would see the day where Tooie gets the proper TAS it deserves. Bravo.
Same. Great watch
I was planning on doing a 100% speedrun that shows off all the fun glitches, but I don't have to be in a hurry now lol
In this tas the ground is merely a suggestion.
Well, I mean, DK and his crew can usually ignore most walls, so I'd say it's very much a Rare quirk.
2024 and this game is still kicking.
Also I like how the tas doesn’t have to change camera angle at all but does for us mortals.
I applaud standing on the shoulders of "probably some short people" to make this TAS a reality.
I forgot how absolutely busted Clockwork Kazooie Eggs were...
Edit: It's no wonder the route rushes for them once they have everything easy to grab in the first 3 worlds just to exit to Terrydactyland and leaving ASAP just to get them.
It would've taken me years to guess the funniest part of this video would be Kickball
From what I gather, the route seems to be going through each world and getting all of the moves, which are required to 100% every world. After getting every move, they go back to get the rest of the collectibles. (Funny how Cloud Cuckoo Land is the only world we can't glitch into.)
I think you can glitch into it - but that glitch is better used at skipping Tower of Tragedy.
Since the way this works (warping via a cutscene) should be possible to go to CCL as well.
Basically, one would need to find another warp glitch, because both are extremely long scenes, either finishing all the puzzles or playing the game in Tower of Tragedy
36:20 The statement Banjo was determined to fulfill (100% wise) in spades this time around.
35:19 what is this insane musical sync
This happens a handful of times throughout with jumps. It's quite funny.
Stoked someone finally had enough patience to TAS this unfriendly-emulated game. Not only did I not know how broken boulder hit boxes were, but also how crazy the range of motion is on certain moves. Canary Mary was too satisfying to watch. Also, I wasn't expecting 1/3 or so of the Jiggies to be collected by means of Quickscoping Clock Work eggs lol.
Having said that, this has been one of the most enjoyable TASes I've seen in years. Kudos!
Clockwork eggs are the most powerful tool speedrunners have and aren’t even a glitch lol. TAS clips are the only crazier thing in this game
@@seifeir6951 I get what you mean. The use of the eggs alone is satisfying, but then using them to clip through walls and quick warp to doors/exits is insane.
It really in incredible how Rare managed to make these wonderful games on something like the Nintendo 64. I really hope one day that they actually give us a proper "Threeie"...
Me too, Yooka Laylee didn’t quite scratch that itch though it tried.
Banjo kazooie 65 🤔
no matter what you think of Nuts & Bolts Rare has repeatedly stated that it's the "Threeie" you're getting, and the next mainline title would be BK4
@@jaredarmstrong7403 By no means a bad game, but man of all the collect-a-thons that came out that year it was definitely the weakest
@@FrahdChikun I think the worlds were way too big, and the thing of making them bigger should have just been new smaller instanced areas, with 1 or 2 levels that did get bigger overall. The design philosophy wasn’t quite as strong as it should have been and there were a lot of collectables for collectables sake in it. I mean, I can remember just about every part of Banjo’s levels, but I come up with mostly a blank for Yooka Laylee, when that’s the newer game.
I’ve honestly been waiting to see a TAS of Tooie for a long time. It’s such a beast of a game to route I’d imagine. Seeing it done and done to 100% makes me smile. Well done RingRush and company.
Ah yes, the routing that Rare had always intended.
Grant Kirkhope himself intended for you to get wrong-warped to Glitter Gulch Mine after you killed Grunty (again)
very cool. I'd love to see a live commentary version of this some time, like other projects which started as LOTADs have. But if that's not possible, its fine. Very cool stuff.
There was a live stream reveal with commentary on twitch.tv/banjorace the vod is available to watch
@@adam_badamepic, thanks for hooking me up. I hope it's put onto UA-cam.

I love all the fun bits being done in the minigames ('autoscrollers'), I have never seen a Kickball Challenge this funny
i'm almost surprised to see this is a fresh upload, awesome
homestuck fan spotted
i legitimately cheered when i saw this in my subscriptions; thankfully my friend i was on the phone with understood. thank you for sharing it with us
Been waiting for this one for a long time! Thank you to everyone involved, you guys did great!
Been waiting for a BT TAS for years. Thank you mr Rush
OH MY LORD CONGRATS ON THE TAS!! What dedication to a goal, to optimise something this big!!
The Jinjos be minding their own business until they hear the sounds of the clockwork Kazooie.
I was just thinking the other day I might take up TASing just to have a TAS of this game. Been waiting a long time for it!
Ive always wanted to know what a full 100% TAS of the game would look like. Awesome run!
Awesome TAS. Thanks for the hard work!
As someone that grew up playing this game on real hardware I can confirm that this TAS both has egregiously extended loadtimes and runs a heck of a lot smoother in BizHawk, my '90s self would've been totally on board with that tradeoff but it feels very... uncanny.
Just 15 minutes in and I'm already blown away by the movement tech on display, can't wait to see how the run unfolds!
this is pretty much what i did the first time i ever played this game as a kid. good video!
Feels wild that way back, any% times while learning the route gave slower times than this. Beautiful work 🙏
I never thought I'd see the day. This is gonna be good.
You did an awesome work, thank you :)
I always enjoyed the way the Jiggy Boulder's Jiggy played the collection jingle.
Absolutely amazing
Nice run 🎉
awesome TAS!
I love how you really got your money's worth out of this game :D I remember playing it for multiple weeks on end with my sister and we would just play the mini games together :D lots of fun but woah you know it's good when even the best run a 100% of it would still take several hours :D that's amazing! What a run to watch though all these years later.
45:00 the race is hilarious and especially to watch that bird fly so long to get to the finish xD
Great TAS! 👏👏👏
okay I think the funniest moment of the run is definitely the part when you have to unlock all the levels at once since there's no way to glitch into Cloud Cuckooland, and we have to watch the same UNENDING CUTSCENE over and over again
I've been waiting for this
a commentated version would singlehandedly cure my depression, please i beg
the way you play the minigames is entertainning
Albeit mildly disappointing not seeing the score absolutely maxed.
wtf what a pleasantly awesome way to end a sunday
Very well done, was extremely entertaining to watch!
Bro finally someone does this
Awesome work once again, RingRush. Love your dedication.
Any chance there's gonna be a commentated version? Played through this game dozens of times back in the day, but have no clue regarding speedruns and glitches and would love to hear insights and technicalities.
This is truly a new golden age of 2024
Oh God, waiting for Canary Mary to finish the race is something else, indeed.
1:17:02 is an amazing cutscene overlap
noob. i got everything in less than 3 hours when i was a kid, and i didnt even need to use glitches to CHEAT my way into doing it
Doubt.
@link670 Nah, 2dos is a god gamer, he didn't even need to find Witchyworld Mumbo to beat the game
2dos > TAS confirmed
Cranky Kong has entered the chat
02:24:57
"Will you help me by killing 50 points worth of germs?"
* Instantly goes for the black Jinjo *
Grunty: "You need at least 50 points in 60 seconds to win!"
Kazooie: At 100 points, 15 seconds left, and still going.
Grunty: "..You, only needed 50....."
This absolute mad lad just got his minecart and minecarted everywhere
Of course, it wouldn't be a TAS without glitching.
2:27: Klungo: "BWA-HA-HA!!! You must fight me to advance!"
Kazooie: "Whatever." (glitches through the caged-off exit to ignore Klungo)
5:00: Jiggywiggy: "You must collect my Jiggies to advance!"
Kazooie: "(yawn) (just goes into Mayahem Temple unimpeded) And to think Mario has to long jump backwards to do this stuff! We still fall behind Donkey Kong, though..."
Donkey Kong:*throws 4 orange grenades and phases through a wall*
godly
Banjo: Let's complete this 100%!
Kazooie: Roo! Rew! Ruu! R-uwu!
45:14 Holy shit I’ve never seen that minecart ever go that fast in my lifetime
45:14 and 2:29:54 are a couple of my favorite moments
The sheer satisfaction and catharsis of
*D E S T R O Y I N G*
Canary Mary twice with a TAS is something to behold
Is this the shenanigan?
lovin the TAS so far,
would love for a upload with a input viewer and or onscreen coords, speed etc would be cool
Would love a commentated version of this! 🙌🏼
yall we are SO back
Thanks.
The clockwork eggs go crazy lol
Omg TAS is my favourite speedrunner, great to see them tackle banjo tooie
2:55:50 what absolute trolling only possible with TAS
The suis in this tas is crazy
Finally 😭
Really makes me remember how great this game is. I thought i misremembered my childhood with everyone praising the original and saying Tooie sucked. It's just that Tooie had bigger levels, but i don't think that's a negative thing. Rare put so much effort and love into this game. Still think nuts and bolts was really good as its own game but it's a shame we'll probably never get threeie
Walls and Floors are only a suggestion
Wow incredible TAS and work !
Do you submit this TAS on TASvideo?
I wonder if a tas with the superbanjo cheat equipped (increased movement speed) would break the game even more
I spent so many hours playing this is as a kid.
Grunty: Those two dolts can't save their world now...why do i hear a mechanical mouse
Love how you spend half the run clipping through walls and doors and floors to get into levels you shouldn't be able to reach, only to go back to Jiggywiggy like "Fine I'll do your damn puzzles."
This is basically how my first playthrough went. Memories...
The Cauldron Keep is falling apart. The two book it at super speeds. They reach the saucer for the grand escape ala Metroid minus the self-destruct sequence.
Would love a commentary on the major glitches and routing
This TAS makes Tooie floors look thinner than DK64 walls.
38:06 after clockwork grabs the last egg and then explodes banjo respawns mid-air how does this upwarp work?
2:56:10 had me dying, especially when one of the bombs spawned with them and they blew themselves up 😂
Banjo-Tooie ? More Like Kazooie & Clockwork Kazooie.
good one oh
IDK who this TAS guy is, but damn he's pretty good at Banjo-Tooie
16:22 the sync lol
yes. Yes! YES!!!
Best part was easily the Kickball tournaments. Stony Banjo does a little trolling.
Will there be a commented version for people less in the know?
Can anyone recommend a fun and active speedrunner of this and/or the first game?
i had no idea floor and wall collision was optional in this game
This is awesome! How do you fall through the floor like that though?
Bismuth analysis when?
3:44:35 I'm still waiting....
So there's 40m of homework before watching this. I won't be first, but I'll be back to watch this later. Also I'm sill able to imagine the voice of rr despite not knowing the last time I heard it.
