Xcel is legit one of the best writers in battle rap history. And shout out to A Ward for showing up even though he had Will the previous week. It’s honestly insane how good he can still be without having much prepared. Might be second only to Bangz. But Xcel left Earth even more than usual.

I believe on Restore Order Ward said he took the battle because he was already going to be in NY that weekend, and thought he could pull a Geechi, like Geechi did with Ward taking him the week before another big battle. Ironically, like Geechi, Ward admits he took the L in this battle too :)

I know know if it was with ease. You can say Xcel won but the battle was definitely closer then you're making it. I would say 2-1. I give A-Ward the 1st although I mess with A-Ward's material more.
Everybody has their opinions and then there's the facts. Although A Ward is an ELITE emcee he lost clearly. You can blame the fact that he battled 3 times in a week or whatever. He lost. Clearly. I'm still a fan of his and will continue to support its just you can't win an all. 🤷♂️

Ya know I've been thinking about it for a while now, and Xcel's construction of punches is basically better than anyone right now (with the exception of Lux, and Iron Solomon, maybe Thesaurus, that would be a great match). When people beat Xcel, they beat him off of either executing angles better or outperforming him. I really want to see him battle the punching-only class - he already battled JC, I think he took that, I definitely preferred his construction of bars in the Danny Myers battle, he just didn't perform as well & forgot his rhymes and that overshadowed the battle, I liked his bar construction more than Real Sikh's as well, but Sikh's lines at the end made up for the formulaic beginning (not hating, Sikh is super dope, feel like he's gotten better with each battle), and he outbarred Daylyt. I know a lot of people preferred Danja Zone's material but it also felt pretty basic to me as far as how it was constructed compared to how Xcel constructs bars (and Danja Zone is one of the top straight punchers).
We need to see him against the punchers, Ave, Rum Nitty, Chilla Jones, Bigg K, O Red, Chess, B Magic, Thesaurus, Twork, Jakkboy, Gjonaj. I'm not usually a fan of just punching battles but Xcel is creative enough to make it worth watching, I really feel he'd shine in that setting. He's great in battles anyway.
I really wish A Ward prepared more for this battle, because it could've been more of a classic watch. Having one rapper's rounds really light & freestyle heavy, unless they're just the godliest of freestylers ever, is a letdown no matter who you're rooting for. I mean really it's possible if A Ward came super prepped he could've taken it on superior angling/performance. But Xcel, in this bag, is not being beat on bars by 99% of battlers.
This was a classic and I am a huge fan of a ward......but I will say if you gonna beat a ward this is how you do it. Xcel took an approach that DNA took. He rapped against award instead of trying to use old run down angles against a ward.

I saw this when it came out, but I don't remember it being this one-sided. Nobody stayed talking about it either; you'd think A. Ward getting his ass whipped like this would have caused more of a ripple in the culture.
On the other hand, the fact that Ward was able to freestyle all of his rounds (you can literally see him thinking of all his lines during crowd reactions) without choking is a testament to how good he is off the top. Him VS Bangz in a pure freestyle one-rounder could be fun to watch.
