It can be quite stressful at the first time at a German cashier line. These guys have to be quick and the company's have controllers that check out how fast each of the cashier's are, they stopping the time, they have a lot of pressure doing this fast and the right way. I have so much respect for these guys, especially in the moment.
You don't have to bag all your groceries at the cashier. Just put it all back in your cart. Usually there is a table before the exit, where you can bag your stuff and take all the time you need. Or just bag it outside the shop, before you return your cart.
What I personly find better in Germany than in the US is you have a price at an item and thats the price you have to pay, all taxes included!! So you see directly and can count how mutch you have to pay.
Just fyi: Edeka stores are some of the most expensive stores around, more fancy and with more international foods and brands. Penny, Lidl, Rewe, Aldi etc. are discount stores meaning they spend way less i.e. on store decor and have less fancy (but good quality) brands etc., which spells out into way cheaper prices. Best fresh produce can be bought on farmers markets. Any German city usually has a farmers market somewhere at least once per week. If you live out in the country side you can also buy seasonal veggies directly from some farmers, even fresher and often even cheaper. Buy good quality bread at the bakery, not in a supermarket. Enjoy!
If you think you are ready for the Champions League of speed packing, try an Aldi on a Saturday 30 minutes before closing time :D Bring a first aid kit, the cashier will win in the most humiliating fashion.
My favorite way of makibg Maultaschen: Steam them, cut them in slices and then fry them in a pan with some grated cheese. Voilà: Cheese crust Maultaschen!
If you've got a car to do your grocery shopping, get yourself a Klappkiste / a folding box. Take this with you in your shopping cart. Due to their rigidity when unfolded into the full box you can easily load it with two hands, instead of a single handed loading while desparately trying to hold open a plastic or cloth shopping bad always trying to fold in on itsself. Also, don't try to stress out. Just plop your groceries back into your cart at leisure. In 99% of cases grocery stores have shelves or tables behind the cashiers were you can leisurely bag your groceries. As almost all grocery stores begin and end at the cashiers you can check out if they do have these shelves or tables before going in.
