I agree. His tone is a little more reserved, though...and you can tell he's fighting with the LP to get it to sound like his Strat- which is WAY more biting and clear.
Is he fighting with it or is he just more engaged. Strat might be more clear but a Les Paul sustains more. Thus it seems to me his vibrato is different and plays of the additional sustain.
thats why there is a generation of people who LOVED buckers- they could push an amp hard.. People today don't even get why that was important back in the day, what with the millions of boost, drive etc pedals. I notice it because i own 6 low output (5.5k) fenders and 1 Les Paul. Even with 7.4k burstbuckers, the amp acts totally different. the guitar pedal in many ways rendered the Les Paul obsolete

Yeah man that era Clapton was amazing. Pure unadulterated blues music that was so good. I’ve seen a lot of people recently hate him because of his personal stances and past mistakes and I get that and I understand if people want to disagree (I personally disagree with him too but I’ll always listen to his music and like him because it’s just become a part of me at this point), but I get really mad when people take this anger and disappointment and redirect it at his playing. I’ve seen people say he’s old, just a “dad rock musician with recycled licks”, and an cultural appropriator of the blues. Like okay no. Sit down. The man can play. Especially in this era he might’ve been one of the best blues musicians EVER in this era. He was just straight FIRE. He was clear, clean, and ready and it is insane how good he got around this time. Idc who agrees with him idc if people I agree with hate me for liking his MUSIC. The man can PLAY and no one should forget that regardless of how much they may hate him or disagree with him. Go after the man not his talent.

Markonefifteen - The older hand wired amps (like a Marshall Plexi) are a different circuit than the newer PC board amps (like a JCM900) That’s a major reason they sound different. A more fair comparison would be a Plexi compared to a hand wired reissue. Circuit wise, for example older amps relies on volume dimed and overdriven power tubes whereas the newer amps rely on preamp overdrive unless you crank them up and back off on the preamp gain. I'll NEVER understand the switch to Strats. There is NO WAY a Strat will EVER sound as good in his hands as this Les Paul does. This is the sound I look for every time I play!

I truly believe the instrument can match a persons playing style… Clapton enjoys playing a strat. He must know. He’s heard the old records…. he likes to change and grow. God bless him. But he does sound explosive on a Les Paul😅
He's become identified with Strats these days and , unfortunately, played one on the Cream reunion. There's no comparison between a Strat and the deep burn of a Gibson. The Cream farewell concert showcased the best tone ever.
you know I hate to agree with you especially considering that I love fender Stratocasters because of how versatile they are not to mention I love all the tone capabilities Eric Clapton was able to get from a Stratocaster but you're absolutely right. you can get some tones from a Stratocaster that sound close and you can use for cream things but it's not the exact same as that warm sounding Gibson sound he made with Cream.
+Nicholas Fanzo Yeah admittedly Gibson headstocks snap so easily. I have a friend that plays kind of softer alternative music on his sg and the headstock still found a way to just snap off.
Eric and Fender guitars affair was going on already in the late 60s with Blind Faith but while I like Eric's playing with Derek and the Dominis live his best, I can really see your point. That Cream tones feel like you can bite and chew them like a thick steak of BBQed flesh
Wrong.........started out on a Telecaster, in the Yardbirds, which when Eric left the band because it was a band owned guitar, was passed to Jeff Beck, who didn’t like it, and bought the Esquire instead.

Great tour that was! I am so sorry we don't have live professional footage of that era. It is by far and away the best blues playing EC produced, superior imho to the Bluesbreakers period. He was delivering the goods. A live DVD of that time would be far better than the RJ Sessions disc. Note the Freddy King influence in the solo!
Clapton, a Les Paul, a small valve combo and 3 minutes of R 'n' B heaven. If anyone ever thought he still couldn't so it, just watch this. Again and again! Love it.
The sound just seems to roll off his fingers so easily with that Les Paul in his hands. His Strat stuff sounds great, playing wise. But this combination brings out the notes so much better. Thanks for posting this.

he played an LP on 'Later with Jools' earlier this year, and he's played a 335 on tour this year, but he still used a strat all through his Albert hall gig when I saw him in feb 2011. I'd love to see him playing Gibsons again.
It’s amazing to see him on that LP, he truly sounds like the old days honesty I thought he lost the mojo when he switched to the Strat, though it’s a more refined sound still is great. I’m a longtime Strat player but when I also plug in a Les Paul the transformation really occurs!!

Eric is so smart. He knows we like him more with a Gibson which is why he keeps it away so much. He never did want to overplay the Gibson’s especially since he believes the best ones ever made aren’t around anymore. Watch him talk about Blackie and Brownie and his tweed twin fender amps. He likes the consistency in all of them. Something that the good Marshall’s and Gibson’s never had. They ALL sounded amazing but each one sounded different making it difficult for a simple man like Eric to find something to sink his teeth into. Plus, he’s more versatile with the Strat. He said so himself. He can make it sound like an acoustic or Buddy Holly or Jimi Hendrix but he can also make it sound like Eric Clapton. With a Gibson, he can make it sound like Freddie King and Cream. That’s it.
Love Clapton on a Gibson. ... his Cream day's were pretty outstanding ! As far as the Strats go I feel his pre Fender Eric Clapton model tones was where he played with more inspiration . He got some great Strat tones on his solo Eric Clapton and Layla albums . Also , he was using a tweed Champ for both of those albums . Also , if you have the time , check out the Ronnie Lane appeal for Arms concert where Clapton is playing an original Explorer and just smokes it ! For whatever reason , Clapton does seem to get more inspired on a Gibson . But then I listen to Rambling on my Mind off of ' E C was Here ' .......... was just thinking , I have seen him play Gibson's a number of times where he didn't seem all that inspired , but when he plays one when the amp is cranked that's what seems to get it going for him .. just an observation
His solo on Forever Man, though short, is his greatest. The tone, attack and feel are just outstanding, as is the note selection. Played on a Strat, of course,

I believe that if it wasn't for Jimi Hendrix, Clapton would have: 1. played a Gibson ES/LP more instead of a Strat 2. not been able to play like he plays today Swings and roundabouts! RIP Jimi.
Does anyone really need any more proof that ec sounds better with a Gibson? Love all the work he did with strats and in many cases it was the right instrument for what he was playing at the time (folk, pop, country, reggae). But when he plays blues or harder stuff he really fits with Gibson like a glove.
clapton was made to play gibsons. his fender work is ok, but...put a gibson back in his unique hands and his music comes back. he wasted too many years struggling with fenders and needs to come home.

I enjoyed seeing that his cable goes straight from his guitar into that fine tweed - nothing in between.
No pedals. All the LP players in the day were straight into a tube amp, turned way up.
Jimmy Beasley there’s something truly beautiful when you crank a handwired. tweed twin or Marshall. Many modern PCB tube amps lack that magic.

I remember the first time I heard this I almost wrecked my car. Playing air guitar and toe tapping my breaks and gas . I immediately bought the CD.
And then you purchased a Les Paul Reissue and Marshall Bluesbreaker combo.
