90s was the peak of AFL standards, most players could use both sides and there was little milking decisions. 2000s they stopped focusing on skill and instead referenced endurance when recruiting
@@JimmyMadzCFC odd I mean they are the same thing but I feel as though umpires should be for baseball cricket and other racket based sports. Something that’s not as fast paced as the AFL.
imagine what the 60's and 70's were like back then.... you'd hear the crowd boo and there's the full forward on his arse and the full back standing with his arms out like "what did i do?". no multi cameras, no replays, if the umpire didn't see it then it never happened.
It was an eye for an eye, natural justice but also tactical. Bit like hockey, you had one or two big guys on each team to keep an eye on the smaller guys not getting hit. You also used to get quite a few snipers who made some cowardly cheap shots. It was all part of it but it ruined some blokes for life too. Players also used to verbally abuse umpires too on occasion. Different time.
Go find a video called 7's magic moments of afl. Ripping watch of the old game. And another one I use to watch was called "the electrifying 80's" use to watch this two on repeat as a kid at my grandparents.
That last one was genuinely quite funny
Yeah 'eye contact'😄😄
It's funny because it's true.
So funny😂
Eye contact 💀💀💀
💀💀💀💀
The old high contact + eye contact...rough
The 80s....peak Australian civilisation.
Not really, 80s were high elbows on a player with eyes on the footy, unmanly to say the least
90s was the peak of AFL standards, most players could use both sides and there was little milking decisions.
2000s they stopped focusing on skill and instead referenced endurance when recruiting
Eh if I watch 80s and 90s games now it pisses me off to see so many players in the defensive 50 kick directly for the boundary😆
I was laughing when he said is he looking at me
That may be the most hilarious drive by elbow ever put to film. So casual, love it.
I've seen this a million times and it still is so funny
50 meters you did the extremely common gesture of disapproval by putting your arms up. 300 meters for looking back at me.
first 50 wasn't just the language, but the way he threw the ball at him
For me 90s and 2000s because it was still rough but fair
As a local umpire, this was fkn funny
Richmond player pokes someone umpires “50 meter”
Why is this so true for an Aussie 😂😂😂
If the Australians are complaining about crap like this, then we as a society must come together and stop these refs once and for all.
Which refs?
Not trying to be rude but we call them Umpires
@@JimmyMadzCFC odd I mean they are the same thing but I feel as though umpires should be for baseball cricket and other racket based sports. Something that’s not as fast paced as the AFL.
@@bobheyotue9850 Oh well I prefer umpire then ref anyway
@@JimmyMadzCFC maybe it’s just because I’m American .
Australians are kin to Canadians! Nothing but love from the great white north to the land down under!
Eye contact was a legitimate lol.
😂😂😂 well done boys, born in 79 I can definitely relate. 😂😂😂
Is he looking at me👹
Love the Razor Ray umpiring at the end there
This is so good. 'Nothin in dat won grow a pebble'
and the 'eye contact' Lol
I love when he gave away a fifty the umpire brought him back to his goals not the one he’s kicked at for the game
The last one was absolutely hilarious
Modern umpires have ruined the game. Players should be treating the game like it was last century.
So true though, afl has got so much softer
Last one was hilarious 😂🔥
this is the best and only us Aussies can understand this especially from vfl days
‘Nothin in zat grow a pair of balsh…’ 💀
Cados with the brief cameo 🐐
the way the umpire said 50 meters you don't speak to me like that
The umpire ran the wrong way in that last one 😂
That last one hits different after the Freo Carlton game last week
Eye contact 😂
Thanks Gil
Why is this so true😂❤
This is me when I get angry playing footy (in the 80s the guy who said UMPIRE!?!?)
I like how you are filming that beat the MCG
This so true how times have changed
How true this is.
We’re do u get ur whistle from I’ve bought 2 and they don’t sound right😢😢😢😢
I went on that exact field on Saturday the 20th July
2000s was definitely the best decade

Bro this is so true!!!! 😂
Which ground was this?
Does anyone realise that the stadium AAMI park, home ground for the Melbourne Storm NRL is in the background?
When you were younger, did you play footy for a club? What team if you played?
Good old times 😢😢
I actually got in trouble by the umpire from rolling my eyes after I tackled a guy hard and complained
AFL umpiring in 2025: "but you were thinking it"
Hey in Melbourne I have been on that oval
You forgot to add the reign of hands on the back... One of the worst rules
😂 that’s gold boys ! Nailed it!
As an American learning about the AFL, I'm sad that I missed the 80's AFL!

Should do kicking at goal over the decades. Nothing has changed 😂
I love this video
Nice last one
I remember in the 90s Michael Voss literally put Alan Richardson in a coma and it was play on, lol.
never happened (the umpire probably) :D
That is what happend to me the other week. Got absolutely robbed in my u/13 boys game. Cheers to the gramp who did the “Amazing” umpiring!
This needs to be shown on bounce
I love your videos
So true

Very true mate very true
Next the umps are gonna have Apple Vision Pros telling what the call is
How true
The 80s was personal💀
And even the 90s 💀
This game is not what I expected found out about Australian football today while in history class(I live in America) not what I expected
Dissent has effectively been thrown into the bin. Not paying it these days.
HOW DID YOU GET TO RICHMOND’S TRAINING GROUND
Well you go to the mcg, look to your left, or possibly your right depending on your orientation, see punt road oval, and you walk to it.
@@falconmclenny7284 oh no shit man. gonna do it at the col freo game tommorow, gonna go straight up and kick a goal.
@@RetroFriez you literally can bro. Someone might yell at ya but take ya shot and bail.
The last one ☝️
Hilarious but true no more touching allowed
