- Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge is one of the best in America. It's even better birding if you know how to bird it. Here's where to go and what to expect in autumn.
"Correction:
05:40, Actually Caspian Terns"
Been there a few times years ago. Grew up in NJ. Went to Brigantine (Forsythe) many times.
I'm in FL now. Miss those places.
Working on Brigantine right now! Hope to have it up by Friday, but that was a LOT of great footage and cooperative birds to edit.
Thank you for another great video. Bombay Hook is my ‘go to’ refuge, you never know what you might see there.
One of my favorite birding UA-cam channels. Thank You. Love the turtles, sometimes I just end up turtle watching.
Right? I kinda know my Maine turtles. Elsewhere? Not so much.
Thanks again Bob. I love that you are introducing me to all these great spots. Another one for the ever growing bucket list.
Wait'll you see the NEXT one. I've already started editing.
@Bob_Duchesne I can't wait but I will.
Thanks for promoting our wonderful national wildlife refuges!
Next year, Blackwater! It was actually the first Delmarva refuge I got to know decades ago, and I enjoy every return.
It’s a favorite of the wife and I and it was a pleasure watching you describe it. Your understanding and insights are educational. And I totally agree, three days. Is about the right amount of time to spend visiting.
I've done it in most seasons. Even had a snowy owl in January 20+ years ago. But this was my first November visit. Loads of fun.
Great video Bob! Really enjoyed the diverse species in this beautiful place!
Thanks. I've been enjoying yours lately, too. BTW - American tree sparrows are in my backyard every winter, sometimes in bunches.
I was blessed to see massive Snow Goose circular flocking pattern there and was amazed! Your video makes me want to go back! Thanks!
My second favorite wildlife refuge too! (I love the seaside sparrows, marsh wrens, and blue grosbeak in the summer.) First favorite NWR is Rocky Mountain Arsenal in Colorado. Looking forward to seeing your favorite NWR!
Great video!! One our favorites!!! We were there at the end of October. Had those Sandhills cranes at Bear pool.
We really enjoy visiting the refuges up and down the coast!
Looking forward to the next one!
Thx for showing these places. Only way I will ever know about them :)
Plus great video and commentary.
Thanks. I really wanted to share this place. It's always fun to bird, and often amazing.
Great video. You have knack of keeping your videos interesting to watch. I have been to Bombay Hook a few times. Prime Hook nearby is also amazing as well as Cape Henlopen nearby.
Prime Hook is good, but I always found it to be good boat access, but not so great viewing. I almost tried it again this time, but I was having too much fun at Bombay Hook.
On the other hand, a return to Blackwater NWR is in the cards for next year. That's given me a couple lifers over the years.
Thank you for another great video another fascinating destination for my bucket list!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Thrilled to see you made it down to Delaware!
Every chance I get!
That was a lot of fun to watch. Now I want to plan a trip to Delaware to see this place. Can't wait to see your favoring NWR.
Really appreciate this.
please, keep them coming-
Great video & overview Bob. Bombay Hook has been on my destination list for the past 3 years. Where do you stay when you go there? I’m thankful for you & your wife creating these excellent videos, and hope you and your family have a very Happy Thanksgiving. Cheers from Vermont
Thanks. Bombay Hook is always a pleasure. I've been a bunch of times. Never stayed twice in the same place. This time, we took an AirB&B about 15 minutes away.
My girlfriend had the nuttiest reaction hearing about the gift shop. The new visitor's center wasn't open yet when we were there.
Most NWR gift shops have trinkets, bird books, cheap t-shirts, and expensive sweatshirts. THIS one had cool hats and great shirts!
I'm adding Bombay Hook to my list!
So cool
Next one goes live tomorrow morning.
Ah I’m at assateaque island today and I was fighting thinking that I was seeing a red necked loon but after seeing your clip maybe it was a grebe
Could be either. A few years ago, I was in Hilton Head, South Carolina. I couldn't believe how many red-throated loons were just off the beach. I had always thought their winter range was more northern. I learn something new every day. Anyway, horned grebes are smaller and shorter necked than red-necked grebes, and much smaller than any loon. Hope that helps.
Bob, I've been there at least half dozen times but learned a lot from your video. Need to get out of the car more I guess ! You must be quite the bird whisperer ! I was amazed you were able to walk along without spooking the birds. I find them skittish there just to pull over on the drive. So where is number 1 on your list ?
Yeah, if you walk slowly and predictably, birds relax a little bit. And in a refuge, they relax a lot. It depends a little on the species. Some are more skittish than others.
Next video: Forsythe NWR in New Jersey. It was awesome again!
@ thanks for those tips. Can’t recall anyone walking there on my trips. Occasional bike or two. Looking forward to your Forsythe video. Need the motivation to drive up. It’s little shy of three hours from central Maryland.
Ah, yes. My one and only Henslow's sparrow was in central Maryland.
Hello Bob, Have been enjoying your videos for several years. I want to point out a minor correction: all of New Jersey is not on fire but rather under an emergency fire watch. Also NJ's Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge (Brigantine) is probably better for greater diversity of habitats. Vincent from Princeton Junction, NJ
OK. A bit of exaggeration, for sure. The smoke started when we crossed the Mario Cuomo Bridge, then got really smoky again in southern New Jersey. I've never seen Bombay Hook so dry.
And, yes, Brigantine is my FAVORITE NWR. That's next. I'm working on it now.
@@Bob_Duchesne Looking forward to it/
Those terns labeled royal appeared to be caspian
I think you might be right. I didn't notice when I uploaded, but noticed the inconsistencies when proofing the subtitles.
I cant imagine what this place is like during its peak migration season for shorebirds. And yes we are on fire in New Jersey
On one visit a few years ago, there was one flock of over a thousand short-billed dowitchers all bunched together. Blew me away!
👍
Another great one Bob. "Marsh Rabbit". Yum
