Appreciate the feedback. I emailed bulk reef supply and Marine Depot about recommendations, no replies yet. I’ll give your recommendation a try. Thank you!!
There is an easier way. Fill the u with water, then plug the holes. Flip it into position and remove the plugs. As plugs you can use plastic wrap secured with rubber bands. To release cut or remove the bands.
I used one of the Imagitarium powerheads they got an air intake on them and they pretty much work the same way as the Aqualifter but you can also face it upwards to give your sump more surface agitation if you get a small one you can get it for 12$ at Petco ;)
+Scuba Steve I made another video for you that should be released later today. Yeah there's risk, but there's a few things you can do to reduce it. Keep an eye out for the video.
+Scuba Steve Oh, using this method to start the siphon will not overflow your sump because the water line will break if you draw too much water out. Also your sump should be big enough to handle the water volume.
j03yYunG Aquariums Yeah, can you talk about the size sump you need in comparison to the tank size? I really want a sump and I'm just about ready to pull the trigger but I'm still researching. To me, they're easier to clean than a canister, not as unsightly as an HOB or sponge and they can hold a ton of biomedia. I'm surprised more people in the freshwater hobby don't use them.
+Scuba Steve Eshopps has great info on what return pump size you can use. What I did was buy a pump with an adjustable flow to adjust the level to what I like. To be honest I was afraid of sumps and that's why I haven't tried them until now. I think I'm going to slowly convert my planted tanks to using sumps down the road. :)
I don't get how the water doesn't drain from the box is the return pump isn't on? Or how you get the return pump to pump back at the same rate as the siphon??
When enough water drains from the main tank it won't be high enough to over flow into the overbox. And for the flow rate, you have to match or stay below the overflow box max flow rate
@@PurelyAquatic thank you. I see how it works now lol. I am worried about another thing though. Do I have to get the flow of the pump to match that of the siphon perfectly? Or is it ok as long as the flow of the pump isn't greater than that of the siphon? I'm just wondering if the water level will be stable enough to use my auto top off system or if over time the water level will drop or increase a little on either the sump or the tank. Cause then the auto top off will either dump too much fresh water or not enough. I'm super confused about this and am considering just drilling a hole on my tank and not dealing with it al.
@@raul253rmpr It can be a lower flow rate, but each overbox has a min flow rate or else the siphon can have air pockets. Ideally you want to get as close as possible without going over. For your ATO, you want to have it in your sump in the return pump area. That way it doesn't over fill your tank.
I think you missed the main benefit of this siphon method. If there is a power outage and you have the air pump plugged in it will restart the siphon instead of flooding your house.
I once had to go to the hospital because I bacterial infection in my stomach that was a bitch. I felt like drying. I can't assure it was because of the fish tank water but I remember to suck it sometimes for WCs and stuff like this. I do not recommend sucking anything non human hahahaha
Thank you.. I just got a new sump and I’m new to it, had no clue how to get it started but now I do!
Sump is the way to go once you get the hang of it.
It seems like those pumps are discontinued. Do you know of any pumps that work the same way?
You can use any small pump with 2 outlets like this amzn.to/3fphc0g , the tubing will just be larger than the aqua lifter pump.

Nice methods!

How do you fill it at the back? Mine wont fill. Does the sump need to be filled up?
Yes it does
@@SamanthaSmith-mw7hi glad I helped
sweet just what I was looking for... does it matter what size tubing to do the old school way of just sucking?
quinton boffy no
Fantastic thanks, but I can never find the aqua lifter for $10.00 I always see it for $35.00 ! Can you tell me where to find it for $10.00 ?

Good video. Is there a danger of the sump overflowing at any point with this method using an overflow box?

j03yYunG Aquariums I get alerts when you put up a video. Of course I work so I'll check you out after 5!

I don't get how the water doesn't just drain from the box once the return pump is not on??
There are two compartments. You can see it does drain in the filter containing outflow compartment when he shuts it off at 3:30
Has this ever gone bad on you in a powercut ever?
Nope never had a siphon break from lost of power.

looks very unreliable.
