Ooh school definitely wasn't my best years, i was bullied mercilessly 😅 that sick sunday feeling.. *shudders* Great video! Crazy how much has been left behind, such a sad waste of equipment. Vandalism is very sad.
Because they don't meet the needs of the modern educational system. Or HSE guidelines. The building was likely too old to be economically refurbished and repurposed. Especially given the building materials used in the 60's/70's and their subsequent safe disposal. Think asbestos for a start. Fibreglass lagging a close second. Just like old hospitals. Inefficient as it seems, it's actually more efficient to knock them down and start again. Or even build on new, distanced brown-field sites and let them rot until a solution to their demise can be found. Sad but true.
It had already become an academy along with some others in Kempston. When they went 2-tier the academy trust that owned it decided to shut it. It was all out of local authority control
Just found a BBC report about this school after a large fire engulfed about 25% of the 3 story building on 6th October 2022. The school was closed when the authority changed from a three-tier educational system (infant or junior, middle and upper) to a two-tier system (primary and secondary) in 2015. Earlier in 2022, the local Council announced plans to build a new 200-place school for children aged two to 19, with special educational needs on the site. Great video though, Colin... Keep up the great work! :)
Was the worse move ever changing the tier system here IMO. They are closing already over crowed schools in kempston and Bedford left right and centre. This was my school Robert Bruce. The sister middle school Daubaney is now in consultations to be closed.
Good to see taxpayers money going to good use. So much for saving energy and the green agenda, with the electricity still being connected. So much corruption and waste of public funds are disgusting when the public are told to save this and do that.
It's going to be a joint school where St John's Grange Academy and Greys Education Centre I used to be a student of Greys and the playground backs onto this school I was told by the teachers there that the Current Greys St John's an Grange sites will be knocked down and moved onto this site
It’s nice to see something different in your explored. The school reminds me of my daughters old school before knocking it down. Some of the stuff left behind could have been donated to another school or given to charity before being smash up. another great video Colin.
I live in kempston literally 5 mins away they are suppose to be turning it into a special needs school but all work has stopped recently for some reason,it's cool to see one of my favourite explorers in my home town awesome vid as usual 👍👍
I think a night visit would be properly scary, but make a wicked video. Something about abandoned schools, once full of laughter now falling silent. Amazing find and as you say, it is like they had to drop everything and leave. Unusual. People really need to stop vandalising and thrashing, I mean have some respect. Great video.
This was a fun video. You two guys are much braver than me. I would have ran out as soon as I heard any noise. 😂 I can’t believe they leave so much behind. It seems like they could sell or donate so much. I love when y’all go exploring together. You both have great channels. 👍
This is Robert Bruce school in Kempston. You must of filmed this quite a while ago coz I was down there last week. The place is completely unrecognizable now, due to building work going on. So sad to see that poor old owl 🦉 😢. I would of taken it away and buried it. Broke my heart ❤ seeing that.

Hi Colin another great video, what a shame and a waste. All that equipment which could have been saved and used in other schools.Just seems crazy in this day and age when money is so short. But apart from that your usual great video with good humour and commentary.Still cannot understand the idiots who go around vandalizing these places. Already looking forward to next weeks.Take care.😀
Can't believe why many youths or anyone think its good to trash good stuff, I know it sounds bad but"! if I found an abandoned property I'd be taking the good stuff just to stop this kind of thing happing to good items that is worth saving..
Hi Colin and Ben, hope your doing good. That was a cool video. I can't believe all that band equipment is just going to waste, along with all that furniture they could donate to other schools in need. Such a shame. Take care and stay safe.
Lol….Scooby Doo, back to the Mystery Machine!🤣🤣🤣🤔Or it wasn’t fixed in both sides properly hence catapulted out cos of the spring load…..?….🤣🤣🤪. Madness how they left so much that could have helped other schools too….sad. Great stuff gents!
Great video of you guys exploring Robert Bruce Middle School. Not to long ago some people set part of the school on fire, alot of teenagers have tried to explore it from what Ive heard (hence the state of it). (Note for anyone wanting to explore this school) Not sure when this was recorded, but the police sometimes come to this school with police dogs and stop people exploring because its "too dangerous".

I believe the work / planning permissions have stopped since the RAAC enquiry was released, it's not safe and the government/ council would be wasting money. If they demolish the site they might want to build more houses due to the housing crisis.
The labour cost of removing the stuff is probably too similar to the value of the stuff? And as you allude to there are safeguarding issues with named photographs?

This is nice change of building to your usual explores. Did that drop get Colin on the way in and Ben on the way out? If the building could, it must have been laughing at you both! 😂
Built in the late 60s to 1970s it it will have asbestos materials and maybe a RAAC roof. It looks like a very similar school building I went to that was demolished. I bet this one had the same smell as well.
It is always a pleasure to watch these but there's also a sadness to them as well. I'm very pleased to see you walk around this school it's a very similar architecture to mine which was very sadly demolished
That school might have spirits of past teachers who have past away before it shut down that still room the halls on the way back to class from some where and it sucks seeing a old usable building left to rot away like that with all the stuff left and it seems like they whould sell some of that stuff to make some of their money back
I don’t know if you notice it but when you left the room with the thing that you thought was a safe which was a heater or warmer I am sure there was a sound that sounded like a woman saying mark, what made me hear was she was calling my name which is Mark, go back and have a listen. 👍
I went to this school from 86-90, and was able to visit as part of an organised group back in 2017. This is exactly as it was then - books, ties, artwork and wall displays all left exactly where they were on the last day the school was open. All very eerie. It has been used by the police for training purposes since it closed, but they have left it 'as is'. From what I recall more recently the school was not maintained and was falling into disrepair while it was still open to pupils resulting in it being closed. As an ex-pupil, it's very sad to see that it that it has been abandoned. As a parent to 2 children at a nearby secondary which is proposed to be closed and merged with another local school to save money, it annoys me that this school was closed back in the day during Bedfordshire's transition from a 3 tier to 2 tier education system. P.S. The camera flying off the tripod in the science room might have been Mr Kramer's ghost - he taught in there back in the day...
Haha i remember Mr Kramer he taught me Science, he was a good man. I to went to this middle school also from 84-86, best days of my young life. I have not seen the place since i left there until watching this video totally at random, bit spooky eh. Its unbelievable how so much is just the same as it was back in the day, like neary 40 years ago. Science room, The cooking room, art & Music room, sports hall with all them strange wooden apparatus things that swung off the wall, even the hall and the steps up to the stage, still the same as in the 80s. Even my old form rooms were still the same. RB was without a doubt a brilliant school fond memories of it and the teachers. just like Grange Hill but without the drama.
My daughter left at the end of Yr6 to go to a different school, Robert Bruce Middle School was closed down the year after so must have been about 8 years ago or so. The head got into all sorts of trouble for fudging exam results, they failed an Ofsted inspection, the buildings themselves were in very poor condition whilst it was still open and as Bedfordshire Borough Council were moving to the two tier education system it was deemed that it would be too costly to refurbish it and rebrand it. There were/are plans for it to be turned into a SEND school but during the years since its closure its mostly been used for training police dogs
I hated school and couldn’t wait to leave, never once have I wished I was back there, getting near to retiring age I now teach new plumbers, so I suppose I am back in a way.
More information about this school for anyone is interested. The school is called Robert Bruce Middle School which is in Bedford, they closed and abandoned it in 2016 and the council were supposed to be demolishing it or something to create a SEN school on the land instead but don’t seem like they hadn’t gotten round to it. From the video
My school days started when i was 8 years old and the first day i was locked in a in a small store room and no lights on in it . But in the dark a voice did say . What did you do wrong then . Well that split me big time and that put me off school for all times . Was glad i got out off the evil school days . Was in a Hospital from the age of three . Then when i did manage to walk with out the aids i needed to walk i was put in to school . October 31 st every dam day at school.
Bet this was an overreaction to Asbestos .. There is a Peacocks on my Highstreet that still has the Christmas windows and all the old stock from December 2021 because everyone had to leave and the building sealed
18:11 sad to see they destroyed those. Both that one and the one above the other on the left side are the same disgusting why they would destroy them. Absolutely sickening too bad you couldn't take them and get them restored by someone instead of leaving them there to fully be nothing
After working for local authorities for many years they will never take anything from a building just up sticks and move on they dont want to spend money clearing building and sell as good video look forward to the next one
My blood boils at the damage some little shits have done to this place 🤬 scandalous that this place has been left to rot like this. It looks like this school could still be open really really sad and I hope it gets sorted fast 🙏🙏🙏
where i live, that would have been stripped of anything copper and other metals, fly tipped in and then set of fire. A former police station closed about the same time as this going by the videos description. The station has been in the local paper a good number of times due to how dangerous it is now, its been stripped, fly tipped in and set on fire. The owners were supposed to flatten it back in 2017/ 2018, but its still here in 2023. A retail takeaway park is supposed to go on there, but the site has yet to be cleared.
It couldn’t be. The building is way too outdated. Even if they could bring it up to current Uk standards for schools it’s would cost more than a new building. A new school establishing automatically gets a brand new building anyway so it wouldn’t be possible for it to be a school because they’d automatically get a new build. Maybe something else offices as such but even then is was designed as school transforming it into a functional office space would be a lot of work.
I was just doing a bit of light homework on this school. Something that wasn’t mentioned in the comments yet is how badly the school did in the the ofsted inspection. Overall score: Inadequate, “this school has serious weaknesses”. Looks like they took the opportunity when they changed the tier system to just close and start from scratch.
If this was in Finland I could guess the story... Something was noticed in the air after student's and teachers start to have respiratory symptoms (mold, fine particles, asbestos) so they are quickly moved to temporary space taking just bare minimum essentials. But then when the investigation for the problem continues it turns out that it's too expensive to fix and the school is left completely as is as the stuff cannot even be sold as it's contaminated with whatever was in the air in the first place....
Lots of asbestos still in UK schools and hospitals etc. The money needed to clear it is huge so it gets ignored. Ppl still die from asbestos in UK, teachers etc.
If this went the way the school, my mam cleaned for, it was a private school. The owner said it was closing down, when they kids went back in the September, With in that time, half of the pupils went to other schools, I think by the end of the year, some classes which used to have 30 pupils in, ended up down to about 3 to 5 pupils in. Anything that was valuable was literally auctioned off with in a matter of weeks of closure, so this could have gone the same way, and what is left behind just goes with the building. one of old secondary schools, which was practically a health hazard, they got practically everything from another secondary school, that closed down a couple of years before my time there, all the computers etc, even a few teachers transferred over a long with some of the pupils at the time. When they decided to knock down the health hazard that was supposed to be a school, the youth centre was the 1st to go, and they just bull dozed that with everything still in it. So i suspect that's what will happen here. Shame though, as it looks like its still in good condition. Most schools like that, were converted in to colleges, so that could have been still reused as one, Just gut it and refit it. We did have 3 colleges that were once former schools. Two were like this another one is a listed building, sadly though the two that were like this sort of style of building were closed down and flattened, the other one they couldn't touch it due to it been a listed building, so they blew a lot more money into it. You may be wondering what came of the school my mam cleaned, Well one part of it which was the seniors, was converted into flats, and a Hotel, which are listed buildings, the hotel part was put up for sale, for 1 million, about 2 months ago. The other part the juniors and younger was sold off, to special needs, which is one of those buildings was built around the late 70s early 80s. That was revamped in side and another block added to it. Two years before the building my mam cleaned, was closed. I got the pleasure in helping my mam collect a few things, and i got the pleasure of a walk around inside, and it really took me back to the early 90s. It really did remind me of my old primary school, i did happen to see a very old computer desk that once would have housed a BBC computer. BBC computer was long, well this was 10 years ago, and those were getting binned off in the mid 90s, the health hazard i was in, were chucking those in 1999/ 2000.
Well, you asked why... "On 1st April 2009 Bedfordshire County Council was abolished. Its functions in the north of the county were taken over by Bedford Borough Council. This was a district, or second tier, authority which was upgraded to a unitary council with both first and second tier responsibilities - a county and district council rolled into one. It this became Kempston’s local education authority. At the time of writing [2013] there is a debate about the future of middle schools and whether they should continue or whether schools should revert to the pre-1970s model of just two types of school - primary and secondary." The school was closed on August 31, 2016 and the GOV.UK site lists the reason as "merger", which means that middle schools are no longer a thing in Kempston.
Have you any idea when it was abandoned, it's something that I find to get my head around why do they just walk out and leave so much stuff behind, was it primary or high school
I know what school this is, but not sure why its in this state though, My best guess is they failed an OFSTED inspection and the council haven't made any efforts to knock it down.
Well, where is this? I'm just curious with the state of education these days, why is this huge property abandoned? What a waste. This school had expensive equipment and a lot of money was poured into it so WHY
Makes you ask why do these places get trashed, That little room was the bad boys room. I remember them well, until I was asked to leave and don't come back.
We had regular days off in my South London school due to aspestos removal / drilling... You guys should wear masks in older buildings as aspestos looks like dust. That looks a great location to make a movie😂
Where is this school? Surely it can be “saved”?! It’s more messy than wrecked. Why has it been abandoned? Where are the pupils? Why is the power still on? Can anyone answer these question?
Ooh school definitely wasn't my best years, i was bullied mercilessly 😅 that sick sunday feeling.. *shudders*

Bet this was an overreaction to Asbestos .. There is a Peacocks on my Highstreet that still has the Christmas windows and all the old stock from December 2021 because everyone had to leave and the building sealed
Hi Colin that was a cool vid, the noises you heard sounds like paranormal really odd
lovely building..2 houses outside..ask them what happened
18:11 sad to see they destroyed those. Both that one and the one above the other on the left side are the same disgusting why they would destroy them. Absolutely sickening too bad you couldn't take them and get them restored by someone instead of leaving them there to fully be nothing
What absolute shame and a waste! Of a school x
Makes you think who's paying for the electricity. Another great video
Your completely wrong
Yeah most likely as I was just speculating if school would have been left with that much stuff here in Finland, what could have been the cause.
Lots of asbestos still in UK schools and hospitals etc. The money needed to clear it is huge so it gets ignored. Ppl still die from asbestos in UK, teachers etc.
Looks like a dead Tawny owl by the feather colour & pattern
Ohhhh, those GCSE revision books....I don't miss them at all 😳
I believe it closed in 2007 when it became an academy and had a fresh start in new buildings
It closed in 2016
This reminds of the school they used in the black mirror episode with the pig, wonder if their the same?
They are, not their.
So much stuff to be reused!
Such senseless destruction
Well, you asked why...
"On 1st April 2009 Bedfordshire County Council was abolished. Its functions in the north of the county were taken over by Bedford Borough Council. This was a district, or second tier, authority which was upgraded to a unitary council with both first and second tier responsibilities - a county and district council rolled into one. It this became Kempston’s local education authority. At the time of writing [2013] there is a debate about the future of middle schools and whether they should continue or whether schools should revert to the pre-1970s model of just two types of school - primary and secondary."
The school was closed on August 31, 2016 and the GOV.UK site lists the reason as "merger", which means that middle schools are no longer a thing in Kempston.
looks like an oven for clay pottery
Power kept on for safety?
Why can't people leave things alone its absolutely ridiculous
The Authority are guilty of "Fly tipping" all the rubbish left behind!
Have you any idea when it was abandoned, it's something that I find to get my head around why do they just walk out and leave so much stuff behind, was it primary or high school
2016 apparently
What no new builds yet ! Good explore anyway Guys .
They could revamp that into a homeless centre
Normally its all fenced off and notices put up its a desth trap were all those electrical stuffanf cabkes normally the electric cut ofg and gas oďd
Have you been to the one in Birkenhead over the road from bus station
the country is in an energy crisis because someone left the damn light on in this school for 20 years
Great video. Anyone know the story behind the abandonment?
I know what school this is, but not sure why its in this state though,
My best guess is they failed an OFSTED inspection and the council haven't made any efforts to knock it down.
Well, where is this? I'm just curious with the state of education these days, why is this huge property abandoned?
What a waste. This school had expensive equipment and a lot of money was poured into it so WHY
@tamsterscott5957 robert bruce middle school in Kempston I think there turning it into a send school next year dunno if that still happening
@kisshufan4ever Yes its in Kempston, when you mean a send school do you mean like a boarding school?
It closed in 2016. It was supposed to of been taken over by an Academy and changed to a secondary school.
Makes you ask why do these places get trashed, That little room was the bad boys room. I remember them well, until I was asked to leave and don't come back.
So much land for developers i would imagine.
Nice Colin. I have to ask, what causes schools and colleges to close? These institutions are vital to society, couldn’t they salvage it?
Failing OFSTED inspections
@@v.i.i.p.e.rOh I see. So basically Ofsted is like the CQC for care/nursing homes.
Too costly to maintain. Cheaper to build new!
They closed mine so they could sell of the land for housing lol
We had regular days off in my South London school due to aspestos removal / drilling... You guys should wear masks in older buildings as aspestos looks like dust. That looks a great location to make a movie😂
Mold? RAAC? Fire safety issues?
Bad what’s left behind it will get get vandalised or set on fire and could equip another school that needs it
Where is this school? Surely it can be “saved”?! It’s more messy than wrecked. Why has it been abandoned? Where are the pupils? Why is the power still on? Can anyone answer these question?
