As a child my family would drive up to Alabama often to see my Dad's family. I remember seeing the bridge abutment sitting there very out of place with the surrounding forest. I always wondered what it was for and now I know. Thank you for answering a question from over 60 years ago, I'm going to have to get over there and check it out for myself.
I grew up in that area of Florida (Santos) between 1969 - 1987. Although I was very young when they stopped the project, I still heard many stories about it from older relatives that lived in the area. A lot of my family are still members of the church mentioned in this video (Calvary Baptist Church). The church has since relocated to its present site on 73rd St. I have deep roots that go back for generations in that area!
I used to live in Ocala right next to the trailhead to the I-75 Landbridge. I LOVED riding the miles & miles of mountain bike trails on the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway. Sure glad she successfully led the effort to stop the canal and fill it back in, so that generations can enjoy the hiking, bicycling, horseback riding and horse & wagon trails that criss-cross through there
It’s extremely difficult to follow the Greenway where I live in Eureka and the people that live along it have made it that way and are not too nice when they say you’re on “their land”😢
You know, I used to live in Ocala 2000 to 2015 I used to pass those woods and look at them and ask myself what the hell is that now after all of these years I finally know
Roosevelt literally tried to cut Florida im half. Ive been to the island years ago but it was like 100 degrees and didn't explore much. This is an. Important piece of Florida history.
Crazy. It’s a really good thing this project never succeeded. It would have had detrimental effects on our natural environment and biodiversity. Thanks for watching!
I was born and raised in palatka. My family would tell me stories about the barge canal. A lot of people were against it but greedy big oil and the government weren't going to budge.
I've seen some of these piers when I grew up in Florida, I assume along the I75 stretch others have mentioned. I remember asking my Dad what they were for as a kid, and he told me what the plan had been. Even as a little kid, that sounded like a very silly and impractical idea
Thanks! I am not sure if you noticed or perhaps you missed it while watching the video... but I did correct myself at the bottom of the screen when I made this mistake. I went ahead and included bold text and an asterisk that reads, "From the Atlantic to the Gulf". But I appreciate you chiming in. You can see this correction at the 0:18 mark. It was a long day that day and I even got "Cross Florida Barge Canal" and "Florida Cross Barge Canal" mixed up at least a dozen times. I probably sound like a goof but it goes to show that at the end of the day, I am human. Thanks for watching! :)

We still have to get the rodman dam removed for her to actually be happy.

Thanks for sharing your videos. I live in lake county Florida and always looking for new trails to hike.
There is a breakfast/lunch restaurant in Jacksonville called Florida Cracker Kitchen
Glad to see you on video again 😊
Thanks Vickie! More to come.
A barge canal project connecting the Pacific to the Atlantic via Florida was doomed to fail from the start.
Yes, because you can't get to the Pacific Ocean from the Gulf Of Mexico by water.
Gotcha

Things could have been very different. That is for sure.
At the time, the greatest engineering feat had been the Panama Canal. It’s easy to understand why they thought it would be a good thing.
11/22/23 I think they should revisit taking out Rodman Dam. I live in Eureka right near the Ocklawaha and locks

Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean? That was gonna be one long canal.
The highway he talking about is 441
Thx for the info on the Florida cracker. I knew about the houses, but nobody ever told me why they were called Florida crackers. Thx again for that
It was supposed to go between the Atlantic and the Gulf not the Pacific.
