RIP Judith Barsi ( voice of ducky) . This movie was one of my favorites and also the one that broke me the most. When my dad passed last year all I could think of was what little foots mom told him before she died . Miss you dad . 😔
Don Bluth had a philosophy that children can handle almost anything as long as you attach a happy ending. So he wasn’t afraid to get dark. And they actually toned it down from his original version. But you can see pieces of it survive: the TRex pursuing them the entire way is a holdover from the idea the trex was originally a serial killer Dino who killed for fun so he was chasing the “ones that got away.” Spielberg and Lucas told Bluth he couldn’t go that dark. But you can still see shadows of it.

Nineteen minutes of the movie was cut and the cut part burned by Lucas because of his dark and frightening it was. Most of it involved Sharptooth and the kids in other types of peril, so you can imagine how scary it was.
This movie traumatized me when I was 8 years old. I was crying hysterically for a good hour and my dad and older sister were trying to talk me off the edge. The scene where he thinks his shadow is his mother? I still can’t think about it without tearing up.
During the fight with Sharp Tooth, it leaps on Little Foot's mother's back and starts ripping chunks out of it. This is shown in silhouettes of their shadows during the battle. She dies later of the wounds.
As someone who has lost their mom as a kid (I was 10 years old when she passed) and was raised by grandparents, this movie has a special place in my heart cause it hits so close to home

Interesting story on how I got this on VHS. My parents and I were visiting my grandparents in El Paso, Texas when I was about 4 or 5. We went to McDonald’s for dinner and instead of getting the usual toy with my kids meal, this movie is what I got! I guess the studio made a deal with McDonald’s to advertise the movie. Later we went back to my grandparents’ house and we all watched it and I loved it. (Fun fact: I still have that old VHS😊).
The Land Before Time actually aired on Treehouse TV, which is a Canadian TV channel for preschoolers and toddlers. Imagine their reaction watching some tearjerker moments on a preschool channel! Especially having Franklin on the channel. As well as Rolie Polie Olie, The Wiggles, Dora and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic! Don't forget Waybuloo, Caillou, Mister Maker, Sesame Street and more you can think of! There's also more Land Before Time movies Treehouse had aired. They aired the movies up until Invasion of the Tinysauruses. Eventually, The Land Before Time TV Series is added to Treehouse's lineup back in fall 2007 (borrowed from Cartoon Network and YTV)!
To answer the how did she die question it was by the t-Rex. If you look at her back after the sharptooth landed on her you can see that she has a large piece of her back bitten off.

This is a classic for me in my childhood actually all of the land before times were a big part of my upbringing. I'd love for you to upload the 2nd movie if you can and maybe a few others. Otherwise, great job. I really liked it. All the happier Land before time's are inside the Great Valley this one is more about getting there after losing their families and his mother dying. So, it more adventure and sadness really. I find the others more musical and fun. It's a surprise because looking back at how the Sharptooth kill his mother, it's a surprise how he handles things in the 2nd movie with Chomper. Well, you will just have to check it out for yourself and see what I mean.
I tend to get emotional to watch this movie that I literally cried on the struggles and differences _Littlefoot_ and his friends go through and the ending once they reach the Great Valley from the score by the late James Horner. No doubt it’s Bluth most emotional film by far. And RIP Will Ryan (voice of Petrie) and especially Judith Barsi (the voice of Ducky) taken far too soon by being murdered by her crazy psycho father. Finally the reason for _The Land Before Time_ running at 69 minutes was due to the request and changes by George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment, telling Don Bluth that certain scenes will frighten young kids so roughly 9-11 minutes of scenes were removed. In fact, Spielberg and Amblin supervising and making changes in this film and to a degree _An American Tail_ released two years before this film were what soured Don Bluth's relationship with Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment and led to Bluth cutting ties with Spielberg afterwards which is why Don Bluth went to a different film distributor (Goldcrest films) and want to have great control in his later films without any restrictions and changes made by Spielberg/Amblin. Of course, we know the outcome of what happened to some of his later films following _All Dogs Go to Heaven_ (except Anastasia).

Little Foot's mother dies after fighting off a vicious predator with Little Foot's help. During the fight, an earthquake splits the land, and Sharptooth and Mother fall in the great upheaval. Once the earthquake ends, Little Foot finds his mother laying on the ground, unable to move.
I could be wrong but I think pizza hut did a collaboration with the land before time toys, but I could be remembering wrong, also the death of little foots mom was my introduction to death as a kid. I remember being super sad. 😢
It wasn't Mcdonald's for us as kids. It was Pizza Hut and they gave away little hand puppets of the characters and personal pans. Also, I NEVER watched any of the sequels because apparently they started singing in them. 🤦♂️

If you really pay attention there’s two chunks missing from his mom, back and neck, I really think her neck wound did it and with the earth quake right after that she just didn’t have it in her to fight anymore. Right before she saves Cera and Littlefoot you can see her showing weakness. I think there is some animation editing that is a bit messy in the Final Cut because you can see a chunk out of her back taken out in the silhouette fight and then when it cuts to her turning around right before the kids fall you can see she has a gash on her neck as well. But if you noticed they pretty much removed both wounds when he talked to her one last time Edit: it always made me mad how the parents were just straight up chilling, eating, drinking water, etc while their kids were missing. Like I get it they probably feared the worse but still 😂
The really warped part of this movie? The original ending had the kids actually die. The "Great Valley" was an afterlife, which (since they found them all there) means their families also all died.

My older brother and I had a Little Foot stuffed animal and my younger brother had Ducky. This was one of our very favorite movies as children.

The soundtrack is the most powerful part of this movie. Its too bad the sequals all became musicals & lost that power.
