Hey Icarus, I'm the creator of the mod, Pyroscourge. I'm glad you had fun with it! I can confirm that the environment in the first boss battle does not hurt the boss, but that's an awesome idea and I may or may not implement it in the future. It's good that the nitpicks you had didn't detriment your experience too much, as many people have had more severe complaints about the weapons or FPS drop. As I still update it frequently, I'll commit to memory the things you've said in this video for updates and future mods in the series. Thanks for playing!
@Jake BELL Baphomet is just a common name for anyone to use for their demon overlord character. It's a religious name, so no, Zen Dynamics is not connected to Winter's Fury based on the naming of two characters alone.
Oh man, I wish somebody thought of this before. Doom's always been about Hellfire and Brimstone, who'd expect Hell to be the complete opposite for a change?
While on the subject of cold as hell, you should really try the wad called... Cold as hell. It's basically Doom survival horror, complete with audio logs and stuff. Very ambitious.
Your channel is seriously underrated when you consider the quality of your videos. I just wanted you to know that you make my day whenever I see one of your vids in my subscription feed.
one interesting thing is that the super shotgun is actually a modified version of duke nukem 3d's standard shotgun. Pretty much the lovechild of it with a double barrel shotgun.
The mapping is amazing and the guns feel more realistic than most. Unfortunately my laptop is not enough to play this mod. I think the final boss level would make a great deathmatch map and the weapon sprites need a little more polish. As for boss battles in FPS games I have always liked the Heresiarch from Hexen and the first main boss in Ultimate Simplicity by Agent Spork is just amazing.
I agree, its a great and challenging mod. Maps are good and there's a good story, damn shame about your laptop:( Hope by now or soon at least you have upgraded your pc.
I played like for 10 minutes and I really like it, it feels like some kind of combo between Doom and some Star Wars game where you're 'just' a regular foot soldier. Lags just ever-so-slightly despite me having a pretty good laptop, but else than that, I have nothing to complain about yet.
"As I've mentioned in the past, first person shooters don't always have great boss battles" - Icarus, 2016 Doom Eternal: "Hold my blood-filled skull goblet."
Another good video! Winter's Fury has been one of the best Doom wads. It is creative, has epic boss battles and still retains the original style of Doom. I think anyone who plays Doom should try Winter's Fury out!
There's also some pretty cool interconnectedness in this mod. For instance, at the end of the first level there's an outside area with some monsters and even some items. You can't get to that area from the first level without cheating, but you can get there a level or 2 later.
not sure if I've mentioned this before on another video, but I love these video. I've been playing doom since it's release and I still play it today. You help to keep the game fresh and compelling. PLEASE NEVER STOP!
I could tell that I will enjoy this mod immensely after only a few seconds of looking at it, which doesn't happen too often. That artistic coherence here is off the charts!
This kinda reminds me of Ratchet & Clank: boss arenas with gradually increasing environmental hazards, Level/Level Section opening vistas, Great use of fog, The soundtrack sounds like something out of Ratchet & Clank 2/3's soundtrack. Also it continues to amaze me what people are able to do with Doom source ports, this modding community is truly astounding, pat yourselves on the backs guys.
I have played this mod through once and I wasn't prepared for this many bosses. Also, I couldn't get the last most powerful weapon the entire time and I had to win the game without it. Not to mention the lack of necessary ammo. The game mod really punished me when I didn't hit my targets much.
As someone who played Winter's Fury and likes to detail everything, I'm afraid I can't detail this as much as I want to say, just download this mod and be amazed! Its a very beautiful mod with a winter theme, hence the title of the wad. The elements of boss battles are taken to another level, very enjoyable and fantastic though not exactly for those who are inexperienced doomers on higher difficulties, even the one below hurt me plenty. The mapping, the soundtrack, the weaponry, its all amazing and you'll have quite a blast. Though there is one thing that this mod really hurt me on and I had to give a point down because of it. Ammo scarcity. It isn't completely scarce but on higher difficulties especially, you sometimes have to pick your battles carefully and watch your ammo counter. Can't go gung ho on everything and that kind of kills it for a mod of this caliber. Other than that, just download it. Please. Donate money to the creator/s for sure if you want!
if you play this with "darkdoomz", you can adjust the density of the white fog to your liking in the options menu. Right now I'm playing through the first level shrouded in mist while listening to the soundtrack from "The Thing"
Great review as always but I would definitely disagree on your nitpick on epic conclusions. Come on, it's the end of the game. Facing down your most dangerous archenemy in an epic drawn out fight is the best way to end any action game. Period.
As he mentioned when he was talking about the first Boss of the video, in that battle even if it's long you don't feel like you are doing always same pattern over and over until the boss decides to die. The problem of the final battle of this mod is that feels exactly like that, the previous Boss battles were more varied and inspired. When I played this I felt like the Last battle was just filler content, they should have made the three bosses before the final one much less resistant, or if you didn't want to made them feel Underwhelming give the player an Ultimate weapon just for that battle that can kill them faster than the previous boss battles of the game, and give the Final boss an much higher Life points so it's longer than the others. In resume, the problem is not to have a long battle, is the didn't feel as polished as the rest of the mod and can be a bit tiresome at moments.
I remember the final boss battles of Dead Space and Dead Space 2, they were made for children maybe. They didn't feel like battles, more like repairing another electric failure. But on the other hand, I don't know how a boss battle must be made so it doesn't feel boring. The BB of the first level shown in the video is really nicely diversified. But still... I'm trying to remember a boss battle that I really liked and I can recall none :C
Always had some problem with original Doom's levels. Now these look like the type of levels I would enjoy. Are there any other Doom mods that are bit Half Lifey?
Hey Icarus, any chance we could get you to stream you playing some of the mods you've already covered? I think it would be cool if we could get like, a once a week or every other week stream, (every other week is usually less stressful). It would be a good gathering spot for all the doom junkies too.
Please, when you get the chance, you should do a video review and stream play-through of "Legacy of Suffering"! It is one of the best Doom I have ever played! You'll love it, trust me... :D
If you are interested in good story telling in a Doom mod, check out Unloved. It is straight up creepy, weird, tragic and very well delivered. Don't be fooled by the title, it is not a joke mod or something. It is my fav Doom mod, I keep going back to it over and over again. Try to picture a cross section between Poe and Lovecraft with just a sprinkle of Ballard and you have Unloved for Doom. Very much worth checking out.
Insanity's Edge ending is you have been move to a space station, it's name in the intro of Winter's fury (cybergazer i think) and also at the end of winter's fury D.A.R.K.ness brings the marine (Elliot) to the station.
Looks awesome, I'm gonna play it. I would love to see you do a video on Unloved next which I find really challenging (I always play on Ultra-Violence) but one of the most cleverly designed mods I've recently played by far - if only the Unloved game was like the mod rather than a weird Warframe-style thing - it's still good though. Although I would like to see your take on Legacy of Suffering which I found to be awful due to its terrible design of throwing shit tons of enemies at the player in tight spaces with almost no ammo and forcing them to kill everything as it locks the player into an arena scenario. Like seriously, there's one bit where it throws imps, pinkies, hellknights and barons at you in tiny corridors to the point where I had to resort to using a chainsaw and I wasn't even half way through the battle. Finally braved through it, expecting a break where I can stock up on ammo and health but nope, it proceeds to throw two archviles and a shit ton of upgraded versions of chaingunners with no cover whatsoever. It's the epitome of how bullshit Doom can be when terrible design choices take hold. I just dedicated an entire paragraph to Legacy of Suffering, that's how much I think that mod is bloody terrible.
Do Hell Ground by Alexander "Eternal" S. (aka Deadall). It's one of my absolute favorites and does a great job of telling a story through level design. One of the best!
This was one of the first mods I played when I first got into Doom a couple years ago, and I've never finished it, thanks to the ammo shortage (as well as attempting to play it on HMP). It looks pretty, and it has some good ideas and even better vistas, but I've gotten old and jaded about Boom-compatible "looker maps" way before my time, sticking mostly to vanilla themed. Which is a shame, because it's clear a lot of time, energy, and thought was put in this, yet I just can't enjoy it.
not sure if you've covered SUNDER, it's a slaughter WAD but it's more creative than your standard slaughter WAD. so if you wanted to cover something that's a fun challenge i think it's good.
Nice Vid Icarus, i like them a lot!!. Ps: Have you ever played Hellcore or Hellbound map pack?? they are really cool but sometimes (like you said) you dont know the switches affect.
played this a while back, and it was honestly amazing. good review. and what do you think, will you be showcasing totlm 2 and 3 as well? i might have asked that already, oh well, i'll ask again ^^
Excellent review, ICARUSL!V3S! Please also check out and review "Legacy of Suffering." It is one of the best DOOM wads to date -- you won't regret it... :D

Did you work on / know someone who worked on a mod/mappack called Operation: UAC? Very similar style to this.
Awesome job Pyroscourge! I'm really enjoying your mod. Look forward to any future projects of yours, keep up the good work:)
FPS drops still hurt even now.
hey pyroscourge i have a problem with the wad
@Jake BELL Baphomet is just a common name for anyone to use for their demon overlord character. It's a religious name, so no, Zen Dynamics is not connected to Winter's Fury based on the naming of two characters alone.
Oh man, I wish somebody thought of this before. Doom's always been about Hellfire and Brimstone, who'd expect Hell to be the complete opposite for a change?
Hell inflict coldburn
>who'd expect
The Africans, for one.
so...
no one's going to talk about on how the pistol looks like tf2's pistol?
It is
DJ Space Invader they also stole the shotgun from half life
I thought the same thing.
Soldier had to find a way to punish Scout, so he stole the pistol and he's stuck with the Bonk-atomic Punch.
Well
It's also actually based on real life tho
The PPK I think
While on the subject of cold as hell, you should really try the wad called... Cold as hell. It's basically Doom survival horror, complete with audio logs and stuff. Very ambitious.
Just seconding this suggestion. Cold as Hell is an amazing feat.
COLD AS HELL IS AMAZING
I'm thirding this suggestion. I's an amazing mod that hooked me from start to end.
Fourthing the suggestion
Your channel is seriously underrated when you consider the quality of your videos. I just wanted you to know that you make my day whenever I see one of your vids in my subscription feed.
one interesting thing is that the super shotgun is actually a modified version of duke nukem 3d's standard shotgun. Pretty much the lovechild of it with a double barrel shotgun.
Yeah, Icarus, the Queen is from Duke Nukem 3D.
And that super shotgun you are using was made based on the shotgun from Duke Nukem 3D too.
So the pistol sprite is based on tf2 scout/engie pistol.
The shotgun is base of hl1 HD spas12 model.
Nice.
The mapping is amazing and the guns feel more realistic than most. Unfortunately my laptop is not enough to play this mod. I think the final boss level would make a great deathmatch map and the weapon sprites need a little more polish. I agree, its a great and challenging mod. Maps are good and there's a good story, damn shame about your laptop:( Hope by now or soon at least you have upgraded your pc.
Is that the thumbnail from The Shining where Jack got frozen? Anyway, Winter's Fury is amazing with such a great soundtrack!
I played like for 10 minutes and I really like it, it feels like some kind of combo between Doom and some Star Wars game where you're 'just' a regular foot soldier.
Lags just ever-so-slightly despite me having a pretty good laptop, but else than that, I have nothing to complain about yet.

May be one of the best mods I have seen you review so far. Whoever developped this is boss.
There's also some pretty cool interconnectedness in this mod. For instance, at the end of the first level there's an outside area with some monsters and even some items. You can't get to that area from the first level without cheating, but you can get there a level or 2 later.
The outside part of this mod reminds me of the ice section of Metroid Prime. It's a nice touch to an icy environment.
I remember watching this video of yours years ago. This was one of the mod I know from watching your video that I actually enjoy playing. Thank you.
not sure if I've mentioned this before on another video, but I love these video.
They need to make a sequel to this. Maybe through the eyes of another UAC marine having to deal with another batch of Hellspawn.
The new alola forms are looken' good
hahaha good one
never fails to impress me with what the doom community can do with this game. great review
omg pistol from tf2 shotgun from half life rpg from doom 3 double barbell shotgun from duke nukes all what i love
I have played this mod through once and I wasn't prepared for this many bosses. Also, I couldn't get the last most powerful weapon the entire time and I had to win the game without it. Not to mention the lack of necessary ammo. The game mod really punished me when I didn't hit my targets much.
*That machine pistol is CLEARLY from Red Faction 2!*
For a moment, I thought that this mod would be a horror one. I was wrong. And I'm glad I was, too.
Thanks for the review. Hadn't heard of this mod and it looks absolutely fantastic.
The wads have so much love put into them.
As someone who played Winter's Fury and likes to detail everything, I'm afraid I can't detail this as much as I want to say, just download this mod and be amazed! One of my favorite mods. Used to play the crap out of it.
I had this mod and it was awesome, the ending was very hard. Had an excellent story to go with it.
if you play this with "darkdoomz", you can adjust the density of the white fog to your liking in the options menu. Right now I'm playing through the first level shrouded in mist while listening to the soundtrack from "The Thing"
I was thinking about downloading this one next
I love the ice theme of the mod
Looks awesome. Will set it aside to play some time
I've just found out that the wad got updated in December 2022, nice!
Damn, i just finished it today 🤣
This is such a great mod, your vid should have more views!
Hell yeah. Definitely looking forward to giving this a go.
This mod looks very... cool.
Looks cool, I'll give it a go.
Thanks for the tip.
complex doom and beautiful doom
Another well done mod!
Awesome video Icarus! I got some serious Metroid Prime vibes from the mod... not sure why though.
phendrana drifts?
Dubhglas Cearbhaill THAT'S WHAT IT WAS CALLED. Couldn't remember.
Loving your new outro man!
Looks impressive!
Maybe I need to step up my mod a bit; though I'm happy to note that I already have many of things you like in it :)
Good looking mod and story! too bad my humble laptop can`t run pass the map 02 :(
Franz CL why?
Soundtrack is from Shadowgrounds, a great top-down shooter made by Frozenbyte. You should check it out.
you should play "town infection" made by cotecio, its old (2008) but for its time it was one of the best
Woooooo finally I have begged for this one lol :P I love Winters Furry it's so cool. Now do Happy Time Circus 2.
winter is comming
Great review as always but I would definitely disagree on your nitpick on epic conclusions. Come on, it's the end of the game. Facing down your most dangerous archenemy in an epic drawn out fight is the best way to end any action game. Period.
Like I said, inconsequential nitpick.

In resume, the problem is not to have a long battle, is the didn't feel as polished as the rest of the mod and can be a bit tiresome at moments.
I see. Hmm, FPSes have always had a hard time making their boss fights fun. The new DOOM comes close though.
You could review Valiant, nothing extreme like this mod but solid level design and few new spins on monsters and weapons.
I love this mod
Music is from game called Shadowground
SPECIAL MOD!!
Always had some problem with original Doom's levels. Now these look like the type of levels I would enjoy. Are there any other Doom mods that are bit Half Lifey?
Well, there IS a Half Life mod for Doom called Paranoid. Icarus did a DMM video on it.
There's also brutal half life if you want half life to be a bit more like doom.
Someone should make a current game with Doom's aesthetic
hehe Duke Nukem boss.
The idea of hell literally crossing dimensions and corrupting an alien queen is kinda awesome
hehe...one of the bosses is a recolor of the boss from E4 from Duke3d Atomic edition
Hi Mr Icarus. Do Psychophobia next. It's a great mod!
smh at that SPAS-12.
Hey Icarus, any chance we could get you to stream you playing some of the mods you've already covered? I think it would be cool if we could get like, a once a week or every other week stream, (every other week is usually less stressful).
It would be a good gathering spot for all the doom junkies too.
As soon as I have a net connection good enough to stream with, i'll definitely do something like that.
Awesome! I can't wait.
Please, when you get the chance, you should do a video review and stream play-through of "Legacy of Suffering"! It is one of the best Doom I have ever played! You'll love it, trust me... :D

Icarus, you must make a Doom Mod Madness video about Insanity's Edge, because you gone miss a few things, which is connected to this mod.
What do you mean? I've played Insanity's Edge and Winters Fury and I don't think I ever saw a connection between the two.
Insanity's Edge ending is you have been move to a space station, it's name in the intro of Winter's fury (cybergazer i think) and also at the end of winter's fury D.A.R.K.ness brings the marine (Elliot) to the station.
DIYM That looks cool!
pistol tf2
*Hey, I recognize that SMG model from Red Faction 2!*
amazing
This is a really cool mod. How about the Unhinged map mod.

Played this mod. Really like it, but it was quite hard... Ammunation was always a problem.
oh cool! the pistol from tf2!
Try the ultimate torment and torture. It's pretty difficult and we got some serious-sam esque dialogue in it. Give it a go.
Do Hell Ground by Alexander "Eternal" S. (aka Deadall). It's one of my absolute favorites and does a great job of telling a story through level design. One of the best!
And the pistol got replaced by the Pistol (level 1 pistol)
The performance should be much better after 6y now.
nicely done, subscribed :)

to me the maps looked too smokey and the weapons lacked that oomph, besides that the mod was pretty good
F bossfights with invincibility frames.
Heh, its a recolor of the boss of E4M9 from DN3D Atomic Edition
So...you like it then?
not sure if you've covered SUNDER, it's a slaughter WAD but it's more creative than your standard slaughter WAD. so if you wanted to cover something that's a fun challenge i think it's good.
Hey Mr Icarus, love your channel. Have you ever considered streaming + reviewing different WADs? In terms of creativity and level design?
Nice Vid Icarus, i like them a lot!!.
Ps: Have you ever played Hellcore or Hellbound map pack?? they are really cool but sometimes (like you said) you dont know the switches affect.
Dat half life shotgun
played this a while back, and it was honestly amazing. good review. and what do you think, will you be showcasing totlm 2 and 3 as well? i might have asked that already, oh well, i'll ask again ^^
Finally!!! :D
That pistol model is from TF2
Machine pistol? I would say that is a PDW, or rather, An AR.
Excellent review, ICARUSL!V3S! Please also check out and review "Legacy of Suffering." It is one of the best DOOM wads to date -- you won't regret it... :D
neato 😕 ha! love it 😄
Icarus, do you have any idea what you've done? My pc is filled to the brim with Doom mods!
Winter's fury is full of lags...
Not gonna lie, I was hoping this one was The Shining themed. But okay.
You should do Moonman with the Music pack.
look... no dislikes! it's a miracle
i recommend you to play hideous destructor is a flip on doom¡s fast paces game and it turns it more tactical
its made a old game new again
Maybe the monsters should be lighter, darker, blue or just some other color so they don't blend into the background.
