Once upon a time there was a king who had three daughters. The black clouds want to take the three girls away, but the King refuses them. In revenge they take the sun, the moon and the stars. For half of the kingdom and for the hand of the youngest princess, a young fellow. Nicholas engages in many adventures, and returns the sun, the moon and the stars.

The makers used the decorative art of a certain countryside region at each episode. The trio of folk art, folk music and folk tales are masterfully combined in the episodes, which have unique imagery, sometimes spicy folk humor in the dialogues. Thanks to the natural presentation of the storytellers, and the music of the Kaláka band, the viewer can experience something unique and special.

Then again, the dragons were colder due to the fact that they stole the sun ,moon ,and stars from the sky and plunged the world into darkness, so I guess the saying "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" is really relevant right now.

...and a broken promise for a promise kept? The dragons kept their word and gave back the stolen celestial bodies, so Prince Nick broke his word and killed them. I wonder if that says something basic about Hungarian ethics.

They could have grown their heads and start this nightmare all over again. So frankly, I think prince Nick made the right call.

the prince had talent and wit and was a doer. the first crying man had extreme wisdom and could see the nature of the world but could not see a way he could help with what he only had. and the other man had extreme perseverance but had been burned so bad by life he only had enough to give it one last go before he could take another fail n give up hope forever but his last go he gave it his best. the dragon had its head choped off because it was vengeful and arrogant and took from others to be sadistic.

Interesting analysis
I don't get what the second mans problem was. He walked just fine and can seemingly control is instant transportation powers pretty well. That sort of ability would be immensely valuable to humanity.
I think maybe they both misunderstood the situation. The first guy can see everything and suddenly the world turns dark so he thought that he was going blind. The other guy can walk everywhere and suddenly the world turns dark so he was hesitate to take a step afraid of falling on the edge of the world. While in reality they both fine. So when Prince Nick put stars, moon and the sun back to their place, the two guy's problem dissappear.
A lot of these stories mention something made of silver, gold and diamond.
Well its nice to have all of those, it means your rich.

So, the dragons give Nick the Sun, Moon and stars so they could spare their last heads only to have them decapitated in the end... the Prince is flippin' merciless!
It bothers me that the golden forest wasn't for the sun, the silver forest wasn't for the moon and the diamond forest wasn't for the stars.
I think the narrator got it wrong and accidentally swapped the Sun and stars.

Did you notice that the horses told the dragons "we both have to die" yet the horses stay unharmed every time? Horses sold the dragons out.
It's not a mistranslation btw, this is one case where the words are the same in the original Hungarian
The first two horses perished the same way as their riders.

Prince Nick: Wrestling is for dogs, who lack the wit to do more. Sticks are for swineherds who must care for their herds. Swords are for heroes, who gaze at death in the eye to save the innocent.

Wow the prince is cruel. After they beg for their life even giving him all sun, moon and star he killed all 3 of them.
He had to do it or the dragons will regrow their missing heads and steal the sun, the moon, and the stars again. So you have to understand it's for the greater good. Do not worry this is all folk tales. Remember they are the ones that did the bad deeds of stealing the sun, the moon, and the stars so a bad deed must be done unto them also to pay for their crimes or bad deeds.
It basically teaches you don't have to keep your promise once you get what you want... And that's not a very good lesson...
Some background that might be lost on modern audiences is that when these stories originated dragons were considered intrinsically evil. The dragon was used in the west as an allegory for the devil, which is why saints and heroes are shown slaying them.

I know it makes more sense for the guy the kill the dragons and he never agreed to spare them, but fairytale heroes usually stick to some kind of honor code. Also, why kill the dragons and let the evil cloud go free? And why is breaking 3 chunks off a diamond bridge as easy as 1chunk from a silver one?
Oh my gosh thank you i used to watch these everyday when i was little and i have been searching for this story for a lonh time!
i sense a conspiracy - i mean the prince went back on his word a lot. what if he had arranged to get the sun, moon and stars stolen by the little man to get the throne??? also when the tale started i kinda thought that he was also the king's son...... and then at the end he got a princess for himself...... following this thought i realized this story could be viewed as a hungarian folk tales' version of a game of thrones plot, :D :D greetings from hungary :)

This story is so repetitive I feel like this was meant to be a bed time story.
There is a saying, that "three is the hungarian truth!" So you can find many stories repeating the same thing for three times. Or three brothers, princess, challanges on the way etc..
'cause most folk tales are bed time stories.

No, any dragon worth its salt must have at least three heads in Hungarian folk tales. Seven heads are the most common, but there are dragons with fourteen, or even twenty-eight heads. They are evil. Period.
There is a very popular Hungarian muppet series about Süsü ("Silly") a one-head dragon, and he is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. He is the "black lamb" of his family with only one head and a golden heart. His father disown and expelled him from Dragonland because Süsü had cured an enemy out of cold, instead of destroying him.
If Godzilla was the prince, the three headed dragon would not last long against his MOTHRA WAAAAAAAVE!

Kiara Thompson no its a movie based on hungarian ancient folklore but the director Jankovics Marcell directed these folktales as well, the animation is really pretty and the story is full of symbolism don’t expect every part of it to make sense, although I’m not sure you can find it with subtitles but I’ll check incase someone is interested

The 3-headed Dragon steals the sun but when nick meets him, he has the stars with him. The middle Dragon is ok, he steals the moon and He has the moon with him. The 12-headed Dragon steals the stars but when nick meets him, he has the sun with him. Why the 3-headed Dragon doesn't have the sun with him and the 12-headed dragon doesn't have the stars with him?
