I visited Thailand twice, and whilst the people are the most decent and kindly on earth, I found the heat and humidity unbearable. My son is lucky enough to be married to a lovely, kindly Thai lady who is a successful businesswoman who caters to the tourist trade. Were it not for the heat, I would move there tomorrow.

The train leaves Bangkok and heads west on the main Bangkok to Malaysia line. At Ban Pong junction it branches onto the line to Sai Yok and the Kwae River bridge. At the end of the line, after crossing the famous bridge, the power runs around the train and ties onto the observation car and heads back to Ban Pong Jct, where the power runs around the train yet again for the journey south to the Thai Malaysia border where it heads to Butterworth for a side trip to Penang Island, the passengers that is. Kwae River Bridge as someone else said is west of Bangkok not in northern Thailand.

You have to get a train from Singapore to JB, then JB to Bangkok (via KL and Butterworth), then you get a train from Bangkok to Hanoi (across Cambodia), then you get a train to Beijing from Hanoi, then you go on the Trans- Siberian Express from Beijing to Moscow, then you get a train from Moscow to Warsaw, then you get a train from Warsaw to Berlin, then you get a train from Berlin to Munich, then you get a train from Munich to Paris, and then finally you get on the Eurostar from Paris to London. You could probably do it in 3 weeks if you wanted to, but most people take several months.
It's coming.......with the Super-fast Trains being planned. Within 20 years there may be a fast service from Singapore to northern Thailand and a 'through' train from there onwards.....work out the route yourself.

singapore very expensive for room, minimum room rate is S$70 per night for clapboard room with toilet sharing, and possibly bed bugs thrown in free. Better budget S$150 per night. Food is minimum S$15 per head per day.
