The free patch contains most of the awesome new stuff.
Yeah, this means buying the expansion is much more optional... but I think Paradox deserves praise for that. It's not a necessary DLC.
We are getting lots of stuff for free and that makes buying the expansion less of a good deal... but that's actually a good thing.

lets be honest how many of us dont buy the dlc as soon as its out, its like sure it could be a waste but theres things in those packs that we wont have no matter how small or insignificant they are, i buy them no matter what they add, just for sake of having whatever trivial and amazing additions they have

I agree - it seems to be a weaker expansion. However the amount of changes delivered for free in 2.2 could almost be seen as a new game. And it is free - this is where the main development was focused I think. I will buy the expansion for a full price if just to say "thank you" for the free part of 2.2 :)

I agree I want to support their generosity and devotion to improving the game. My hope is tech rework next, I also want more species types like silicon based ones possible living on extreme planets like toxin and volcanic planets. Though I'm sure diplomacy etc is next, I don't think tech currently works as it does in real life, it is far to random in some ways and in others not random enough.

My brother legit complains that I play evil guys too much. Driven Assimilators, Determined exterminators, slavers, Psionic slavers, hive minds using xenophages (livestock), syncretic evolution slavers. Heck, I finally even got around to getting the suffer not the alien achievement, which involves you playing Fanatic Purifiers and *exterminating all other sapient life in the galaxy* . I didn't eat them, I only neutered (yes, NEUTERED) one species. No, I worked them all to death in labor camps. And then went synthetic ascension just so I could exterminate myself, thereby wiping out all organic life in the galaxy, after nuking every world I could from orbit. Evil guys are just too fun for me.
That said, my first 2.2 campaign will be socialists dedicated towards liberating the workers of the galaxy, and the second a regular old megacorp... followed by a criminal syndicate (possibly even a subversive cult), and then driven assimilators, because they're my fav. Then I'm probably gonna stick to the evil guys again from there.

I played as one once, I roleplayed them as benevolent overlord, giving my population the best standards I could, in terms of food, employment, housing, etc.
And I managed to convert the galaxy and protect the organic species from their own destructive pulsions, yay me ^^

I feel the price for just the DLC content is a little high. But I will gladly pay the money for this DLC because I like to think that I pay for 2.2 too. I am no game dev but looking at all the changes that are coming with 2.2 this seems like a lot of work, which is completely free for everyone who owns Stellaris. BTW I doubt a lot of studios would put in so much effort for something free if they don't love the game. Anyways, if you think about it that way it is really acceptable to pay the full price now.

      K. So will I be playing a Corporate authority as much as I would be playing a Gestalt machine intelligence? I can fairly say no.
Megacorp is bringing a empire type and play style I have always wanted: The Subversive Cult. An empire that is hardcoded to play tall, play the diplomacy game, and change every other Empire to suit their ethics and beliefs outside of having to go to war and liberating Empires. The ability to more or less subvert another Empire through philosophy is just, too fantastic for me to pass up. So ultimately? I see myself playing a Corporate Authority far more than I ever played a Machine Intelligence.

It's a purchase for me for sure. I feel that so many people under value entertainment via video games for some reason. What I mean is if I'm willing to pay $12 to go watch a two hour movie that's $6 an hour. Even with only one play through as a megacorp at say 25 hours you've already had less than a dollar an hour entertainment return. As stated in the video there's also a lot of content that is not megacorp empire exclusive so any other play through will have all the other aspects as well. I've lost count of the number of friends I've tried to introduce to Paradox games who looked at the huge number of DLC and never even bothered with the core game.

To be honest, when an update adds in a new government authority type or just a new race anything, I like grabbing it not specifically to play myself (I'll do that for sure) but mainly because I love adding to the menagerie of custom races I've already created for the game. So far I've got races tailor made to my enjoyment for near every unique government type in the game, having another to run across in game or play against would be great. A modded fallen megacorp empire is a concept that also sounds incredibly exciting for me. Also I find it interesting they opted for something to crack black holes for resources rather than something that could only be built in nebulae in order to function as a man-made star nursery for those mineral gains.

Have a criminal syndicate in my game now and it is really punishing me if I don't build enough enforces, but enforcers also spawn defensive armies and give unity so they force me to focus more on defense and get a lot out of it. I feel you are really underselling the new tile system with regards to your conclusion, sure the DLC is just flavor on top and might not reflect the price, but the entire update all together makes it worth it.

Yeah I like playing as a mechanical empire quite a bit as well, I just can't put my toys away forever after all. :) Honestly I highly appreciate the new additions, everything thatr can add more scifi flavor into the game is welcomed. Even if it is sometimes trivial or limited.
All that needs to be done is add biological and Ai ships, and work on the devouring swarm empires. There is so much story potential with living ships for your fleets, and even having a colossus that eats planets/fleets for example.
As for your "moral quandaries" I see no issues what so ever. ;)

I can understand your point on "are the features of the megacorp DLC worth 20 euro", but I'd like to add one more point:
Developing a game isn't cheap and maintaining it isn't either. sure. the new addon will pull a few more sales, but I guess it won't pay the whole team by itself. I love stellaris and I want it to be maintained, and that includes features everyone gets for free like the new tile system or the hyperspace rework of 2.0. Other companies might use these features to release a Stellaris 2 full price title(I am looking at you, EA, Ubisoft, Activision...), but Paradox doesn't.
The Vision you have mentioned is a great one, a Vision to deliver the best space strategy game and there is a steady progress. I want to be a part of that vision and I want to see the game become better and better, return and enjoy new features, new reworks like other enjoy the content patches e.g. of HoI4, CK2, EU4 and so on and to give the developer the funds to do so, I gladly pay the DLC and I am happy that there are no explotative lootboxes for real money in game as it seems to be bussiness standard.
Paradox, shut up and take my money and make stellaris greater than before.

This is one of those DLCs I buy to keep development going. It is more like I'm donating for 2.2 and getting the Megacorp stuff as a thank you.

Main reason i'm waiting on a sale is that the trade system they implemented is ultimately pretty underwhelming. You can't build trade ships or anything. It's just connecting space stations to set up a tax route essentially. Thus while the economic update over all is pretty cool this didn't feel like the big trade revamp we were all waiting for. I think it's neat though how Megacorps can build on others planets to assist them to play tall. That makes it way better value than Apocalypse.

That's a fair decision to make. It was a huge fundamental game change. I know why they did it, but I totally understand why you won't go with it. You basically need two copies of Stellaris now, one pre FTL purge and one current because of how different they are.

  • @XhaarSoil
    @XhaarSoil 5 років тому

Just bought it and tried megacorp.
Some issues is that playing wide is way more punishing than other empires. The market is broken you can essentially buy all the other resources for credits and sell/buy resources to replenish your credits again. Basically infinite resources.
Branches are quite nice little extra benefits. The planet UI needs some more work however planet management is a whole lot better for sure.
Megacorp punishes playing wide way more than other empires.
Overall worth it I'm enjoying the game all over again.

That being said with technological ascendancy your 2 species ascension perks and 1 or 2 of the mega structure perks I really only effectively have 3 empty slots. Personally I'm glad they didn't add to many more and I find the ones they did to be awesome additions.

It is definitely worth buying if only for the sole reason the game is not abandoned and is being developed and changed in most significant ways. I am in awe about the economic overhaul, and than on its own worths the price tag. The fact they do not force gamers to buy it is a great sign of kinda good will of the developers, and they surely deserve a thank you from us. Fortunately, they've provided us with a way to spell thank you by buying the megacorp expansion.

Should be noted, game is still a little buggy when it's fresh. I started a game with Syncretic Evolution, and my first list of admirals was all serviles, despite the servile trait saying they can't be leaders... and the fact that I had restricted them from leadership roles. My first ruler started with no traits, too.
Also, if you haven't played Stellaris before, or if you have but you aren't used to other complex 4x-style games, the new economy system is pretty badly unintuitive for a few hours. It's also a bit harder to get a grip on everything that's going on sometimes; for example, you won't be getting such an immediate impression from each planet what makes it different or special compared to others, if it has such qualities.

I feel like the main thing lacking from Synthetic species, and it sounds like the thing lacking from Corporations, is a unique way to win the game. Or some kind of synergy/countering behaviour with the other types of empire. Even though you're playing an authority that should have very different goals and strategies, you're basically playing the same kind of tactics as anyone else out there. The win conditions in the game are kind of stale. It's like, think about the last time you played a Pacifist. At some point, the game twists your arm and says "if you want to win, you need to stop being pacifist". There just isn't space in the mechanics to play a different kind of ethic from start-to-finish.
I hope the next update brings some advanced diplomacy.
