    good video, great practical advice.
    as an aside... I always find it funny that people call these things "hot water heaters" and not just water heater.... The hot and heater are kinda redundant. Its like calling an oven burner a hot oven burner or an air conditioner a cold air conditioner.

    Actually there was " something " there at the bottom element when the power was on and you checked for voltage. There was 115 volts there but you measured across the terminals and they have no ground (naturally). If you would've measured from the unswitchwd leg to ground you would've read 115.
    You do not need a different meter to check for a grounded element. Simply remove both wires and check each screw terminal to ground on the bare tank. Continuity there means it's grounded.

    Can you put pipe dope on the threads to the elements or is that bad ?

    I was taught the top "breaker" only trips from over temp not current. Is a thermostat hanging up allowing excessive temp?

    What size socket? Do you need to dope the threads on new elements

  • @LeftsnRights88

    It looked like you didn't put teflon tape on the element threads. I know the rubber gasket should seal good enough but I think I would wrap a little teflon tape on for cheap insurance against any possible leaks. Do you ever change anode rods? Just wondering. Good job Steve.

    Steven,
    Great video, I really like the tags you use, I might have to look in to those myself. I like listening to you, your accent is exactly the way my dad talked, he was from Peabody MA. He just passed away recently so I enjoy hearing that accent!
    Keep up the great work!

    Never put a valve on hot side, some guy leaves power on but closes both valves which eliminates room for thermal expansion and ruins t&p valve! Great vid! Even 2yrs later

    I was hopping to get your opinion on putting a ball valve on the hot side of a hot water heater or if you know a code that doesn't allow it

      pop stream i never put a shut off on hot side because then you shut the cold off it shuts the hot off ...but it will not hurt to do it just a waist of money and its not needed

      It's ILLEGALto put a valve on the hot side. Yes, there is a t&p blowoff, but what happens when a home owner plugs or caps it, when it starts to drip? You must have safety redundancies. You have a very powerful bomb that could easily kill. IT IS NOT AN OPTION.

      sounds like it could be the upper control check it with a electric meter power coming in ???is the power going to the elements????? the top one will heat up then the lower one kicks in after the top one is satisfied ,you have to test to find the problem .are both elements good????????

    Anoide rod...funny. Anode rod as in anode and cathode. Loose won't trip the breaker, unless the wire manages to short against the other or ground.

      4katchupwoman well get a electrical tester a cheap one will do just fine ,shut power off and disconnect one wire do a ohms test on the element it its ol or open line its the element then you need a special big wrench to remove it once the tank is drained make sure the power is off .

    I have a whirlpool hot water heater , draining it is ridiculous , the drain hole in the drain pipe is so small it clogs easily , and the drain spigot is situated in a stupid angle so that the pan edge interferes with trying to attache a hose ...... we can send a man to the moon , but ...........

    • @stevenlavimoniere
      @stevenlavimoniere 9 років тому

      ***** drain it with water pressure to it it will clear the drain of debree

    • @shure46
      @shure46 9 років тому

      steven lavimoniere
      yes it does , and then it clogs up again in no time ..... I have drained it already , just commenting on how crappy the design is on these things ....... manufacturers should figure the drain space needs to be bigger and the drain cock needs to be angled better for attaching a hose , since most likely there is going to be a metal pan to consider RIGHT IN THE WAY if the drain cock is angled the wrong way (which mine was) ...... I thought to twist it a bit counterclockwise , but didn't want to risk a leak , so I "rigged it" ...... job is done now ...... had to replace elements and flushed it out a bit ....... could have been twice as easy with better design from those knucklhead college kids in engineering departments who have never drained one of these things in real life

      Bradford whites the anode rod is integrated with the Hot supply fitting outlet. Cold side is the (aquajet) that feeds all the way to the bottom and blows away sediment I believe. Pain in the ass to change out. Wish they had the anode seperate fitting on the top like other types. Easier to change.
