Bought one a couple years ago, will never go back to a machete, this thing comes from the factory wicked sharp and makes short work of some pretty stout wood, easy to sharpen too.
The best thing about this tool for me is its weight, it can do much of the work of a small hatchet and it's considerably lighter and more versatile. More awkward to carry but sits nicely on the side of my 50L rucksack. I was clearing a footpath of 7ft bracken earlier and it was bloody hard work. Similar to you with the saplings. This is where its lightness is inconvenient. For clearing large amounts of big weeds you'd obviously be better with a longer, thicker machete or sickle or even a scythe. But they're big and heavy so I'm never going to carry one on a hike. I haven't sharpened mine since I got it a few days ago, and the coating has come off most of the blade edge. My plan is to get and keep it razor sharp so weight/momentum is less important. I enjoyed your video anyway, take it easy.
I drive snowcats for my snowmobile club in the winter and we use this as our quick tool to cut small trees and brush, when buying new they dont cut as good as it could be, we get one of our club member that is a "Saw Filler" by trade and once he he's done with them they are amazing, that log would of taken about 5 or six hits and those brush he was cutting would of been one swing. We love them and use them.
Just stumbled over this review ,I have zero knowledge of that whacker but it looks like the secret to it's whacking ability is the length of that handle. That is a lot of leverage which equates to nothing but weight . I have seen them on display at the big box stores here in the states but have had no need . Odd item for bush Craft but it will do a lot of jobs that need doing around the camp site ,you just never no until your challenged . Happy Trails
I bought one today i was so impressed with the sharpness of the blade i used it as a wood plane on a tight door it removed the wood in shavings just like a plane,,here in the UK I paid 11pnds,,dropped from 43pnds,,Made in Finland as apposed to the Canadian unit made in China and not as well maid,,tomorrow i,ll be chopping down trees,,great tool
The crazy thing of this tool is... like the Glock knife the tang is extremely short. But it isn't a weak point at all. It takes all the power chopping punishment. For arm sized wood pick this one over the X7 or X10. This one bites way deeper.... Very good tool.
The previous version X3 had a sharp tip, it was much better to the point where sellers would sometimes demand a premium price for the last pieces once Fiskars stopped production and replaced it with XA3
I love fiskars products! I use the X7 axe and it's a fantastic tool. Razor sharp and great to handle. Love the look of the bill hook. Top vid, Dave! 👍🏼
Looks like a nice heavy duty cutting tool there. And high vis with the orange on the handle so you dont lose it when you put it down. I use an old Billhook of my great nans myself but definitely looks like a nice semi bomb proof version.
Have you tried the Woodsman Pal? It's an American design from WW2 that combines a billhook with a machete type blade. I find it very useful for clearing brush and vines from my hunting stand located in the forests of Maryland's Eastern shore.
I've just ordered mine to use for chopping kindling. Been using an axe but I saw Alaskan Bush people on tv using a billhook and it looked very effective, - - as long as you keep your digits clear!. Where is the Fiskers outlet? Is it in England?
These billhooks are very effective tools. I can see why they would take it over an axe or hatchet. A billhook can chop quite some thick limbs. And the thinner limbs are a breeze to go through. Where an axe or hatchet is unwieldy due to its heavy head, chopping thin limbs..
Excellent tool, robust and resistant to rust, suitable for limbing or batoning work. I prefer my billhook, than having the pointed end, with which I can skewer the pieces of wood to lift them off the ground.
superb type of tool i use billhooks a lot im used to hedging with them from devon they vary from area to area region to region!! years ago you could tell what part of devon or uk was from by the type of billhook they used!!
I used to have a gardening job, I found an old bill hook in the shed of the estate I worked and cleaned it up and put it back to work. I always remember that thing for some reason
They actually go way way back almost to prehistory they have a very long lineages one of the first things any primitive farmer had to do was clear ground!! These things are superb at it a very underated underused tool these days
Great review mate! Personally I would stick with a standard machete... but im a old set in my ways dinosaur! Great vid mate keep them coming!Best wishes bud
That is a pukka tool!!! I want one for the garden. Plus doubles as a great stress reliever, get annoyed, go out and chop a tree down!!! I usually use a cheap Bowie for that but I've broke a few and this looks safer!!!
.....the belly is the sweet spot for chopping for kukuri also....the hook seems to get in the way once you go beyond the belly......it does the job intended , clearing brush , chopping is secondary . English foot soldiers pulled many French knights off their steeds with this farming tool , GRIZZ 🐻
Nice demo. I've been looking for a similar tool to cut small saplings but, as you show, the springy stems just bounce away as you hit them. I haven't found anything better than a pair if loppers yet.
Nice vesuri! I always carry one in the trunk of my car. "Vesuri", for cutting "vesa", literally meaning young tree. So I guess vesuri could be translated to "young-tree'er" :D Recommend trying bigger models too, with longer blade and significantly longer handle. Always mind your every hack, every single strike, every cut. When I was a kid I blew that blunt tip on my knee. Not hard but still hurt very much.
I love your accent! Why do you switch from millimeters to inches? I have the Fiskar Billhook Saw; bought it because I liked the fierce way it looked. No idea what I'm going to do with it yet --- LOL. But I am sure that no part of my body will get within two feet (62 cm) of that thing.
Design is old finnish "Vesuri" true veruri is way beter then that plastic wonder, but beware your legs and fingers it's hurt many people when they work wiht that too fast and tired...
id tone down the handle color a bit for any stealth or camo camping but ok as is for seeing it on forest floor id add cotton self adhesive camo tape to its handle tone it down a bit take off any fiskars zombie killer decals!!

An angled cut might help but the beauty of the hook is pull cutting at the base of saplings in my opinion...

A machete

Will it take up the place of My Skrama on the Backpack ?
just take both ! lol. It doessn't have a point but it probably slashes better but probably chops a little worse

Finnish Quality!
Made in Poland nowadays.
what exactly is the bill supposed to do or its purpose .I just don't get it
It is a hook for hooking away what you cut and dead branches. That is all it is , a hook for hooking away stuff
Road warrior In Finland we call that thing a "vesuri" and its main purpose is de-limbing. Cutting branches off a log.
And you can chop those thicker branches also with it .
It bites deep, and is very fast, when comparing it to a hatchet for example.
Very effective tool.
Underrated I think by many.
Because of 'unknown makes unloved'.
