- This is the Guillow's 500 series (16.5" Span) Spitfire. I replaced almost all of the wood with light contest balsa. As well, I reduced the thickness of the frames and bulkheads. Unlike my other 500 series builds, the Spitfire is heavier because the shorter nose required a lot more weight for balance.
Span: 41.9 cm
Weight: 28.3g (without rubber)
That nose box is genius
That's an impressive indoor flight for that model. Congrats!
Good job and nice flight. Most of us build these old Guillows kits for nostalgia and fun, sure is heck not going to win a contest. Years ago I stopped trying to make them lighter and just build out of the box now. I have found with proper trimming, the flights were pretty close in duration. I am happy to get a 20-30 sec flight from one of these builds.
Great build alternative for the nose.
I was inspecting the video frame by frame (perfectly normal) and thought "there's no way any of that wood is from the kit'". Then I read the description. The nose-box idea worked really well and is worthy of copying on all of those Guillow's designs.
Fabulous flying as usual!
Thanks! Yes non kit wood is the trick. I was fortunate to have some 1/20" balsa that was less than 5lb/ft3.
I love this little plane
Love your work
great build!
Nice flight ! Wonderful !
Quite difficult to trim a less than feather light Guillows for tight circles and fast flight. It's doesn't stay in the air long when the prop stops turning. I have the larger Guillows as an rc model on my channel that is one of my earlier builds, which flies well at tank weight. Certainly wouldn't have a chance with rubber power.
