In June 1945, the design bureau of plant No. 100 began work on designing the second tank with the IS-7 index. Compared to the preliminary version (Object 257), the requirements for armor and mobility increased. In September 1945, four preliminary designs for the tank were worked out, which continued to be called the IS-7. Under the designation “Object 259” was hidden a project with a KCh-30 engine, as well as an electromechanical transmission. In 1946, various options for machine gun armament of the vehicle were studied, including several types of turret-mounted aft anti-aircraft guns with remote guidance.
