Hi Conor, I'm a random person on the internet who just happened to pass by your video, but I wanted to say thank you for making this. With 2021 being the 20th anniversary of Ocean's Eleven, I've felt a desire to re-watch the trilogy recently. Luckily all 3, and 8 are on HBO Max. After watching them, I was reminded of why I love the original 3 movies, and how they're timeless and unbounded. Yet, considering the state of blockbusters now, they are sadly of their time too with a magic that can't really be replicated. I never did consider the masculinity aspect of it before, even if its obvious, and I really wish Ocean's 8 could have done a feminine approach with a style to make it a fine addition of that trilogy. Your analysis was finely thought out and the editing did the films some great justice. It's also great to finally get a video essay/retrospective on why these movies are cool and fun than the usual shorter and quicker reviews people have made. In other words, thanks for the Cool video. Cheers.
To the people saying “speak up”, how can you not hear him? He’s compressing his voice so that you could raise the volume and listen to him louder if you wanted. So that you don’t have to turn down the volume…
Isabel definitely wasn’t short changed. They made her more than just the woman Rusty’s in love with. She’s tough, she’s smart, she’s a bit ruthless especially towards rusty like she was waiting to make him suffer
The entire time I was watching Oceans Eight, I kept thinking that the script must have just told Cate Blanchett, “be Brad Pitt.” I don’t blame her at all. It just felt like that was the only goal for her character. Play the character people like just be a woman while doing it. And that summarized, to me, the entire design goal of the movie. With that cast it could have been great and there’s nothing stopping an Oceans film from working with an all female crew. It’s a shame that it didn’t work, for whatever reason.
@@karmicbreath prime 80s Mann would've been overkill - Manhunter alone is responsible for like 50 percent of 80s drip, prime 00s Mann would've been overkill too because Mann stopped giving a fuck and started just crushing it - Miami Vice movie would look like some grayscale Bela Tarr film in comparison with what kind of visual mayhem he would conjure in Vegas - Blackhat already went in that direction somewhat and it had nowhere near as flashy locations. Vegas Mann would be a Stan Brakhage film with Valentino suits and Ricardo Villalobos Richard D James soundtrack just for the sheer hell of it.
there are only a couple of movies in the 2010s and after that i rewatch and actually enjoy. however i’m always down to watch movies from the early 2000s and before then. feel a little bit of excitement. something shifted
Man, I really really wanted to like Ocean’s Eight. Loved the original trilogy and was so excited for Eight. But it was such a let down. And I think the script was a little too on-the-nose to feminize the elements of the Ocean’s trilogy, specifically having to steal jewelry, in my opinion. If they do an Ocean’s Nine I’m down to check it out since I like the concept and the cast, but everything needs to be improved. Different director for sure.

your throughline that coolness is only masculine (the only cool female characters being masculine) reveals a problem with how you - and I fear a lot of men - think.
Apparently, nothing ever happened in the world until @jqv-whatever started watching movies. Ooh, let's everyone subscribe to him after we do the same thing for the guy leaving out something exceptionally important in his video.
When you talk about nothing less cool than trying to be cool and show the clip from Mad Max Fury road, I think that clip is trying way too hard. The other two clips from Bad Boys and the one of bogey or both cool as fuck obviously, but the Mad Max clip isnt
It’s a rare thing, a film you watch time after time, which never bores you.
Should have won an Oscar for "best movie ever made."
@@agentcouger626 That's not what you win Oscars for.
Agree!!!
the sound-track is so good for this movie
...it's a crime
God bless David Holmes
The original meaning of cool is calm. That is how you become cool.

Some of the best films ever, dismissed by many as all style no substance. I could watch them all a million times (except 8)
Awesome essay. I appreciate the dissection of “cool”
oceans series never bores you
I love Ocean's Eleven.
Me too 😊

this was such a good analysis and deserves way more views than it got

I feel like we dont need that film with only girls, like why? Its pushed in todays society but it dont work with the audience at all.
they could’ve just made an ensemble heist movie not attached to ocean’s franchise. it’s so tacky..
I dont consider 8 a Oceans movie.
8 feels like a fanfic dont it
it’s actually better if you don’t consider it an oceans movie. but it bothered me the whole time
Michael Mann would direct the living fuck out of Ocean's 11 type of plot.
I wouldn't mind seeing Michael Mann using Las Vegas as his sandbox.

Pretty interesting idea for an essay, the only thing I wish was better was how quiet your voice is.

Being cool? The correct translation is: gracefully. Being graceful is equal to being cool. The term comes from a branch of jazz music.

Nice video.
I refuse to believe Danny Ocean died. Ocean's Eight is not canon to me.
We dont know hes actually entombed though

The intro😎😎😎
The Ocean's trilogy is only surpassed in greatness in my mind by the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Realll
Nah original Star wars trilogy tooa
Great essay. Criminally low views. You should steal some more.
Damn.
Heist music! Lol
The characters who are antagonistic to the plot are noticeably 'uncool'

Can I ask how do you define ”cool”? Asking just out of interest :)
@@Tontsa1co ask
Oceans 12 is best
11 is the best heist movie
12 is the best movie
13 is over saturated :(
But you have to admit, the nose played.

I'm sorry. What? The Mad Max clip of the chase with the guitarist is one of the coolest things ever.
It’s not that serious bro
