      Literally a timeless car in my opinion. The interior and exterior are old, but that's what's cool about it. It's a durable interior that isn't anything special, but it works and it's simple, which I know a lot of people would like nowadays. Literally a car that is built like a tank and is perfect for a zombie apocalpyse~

    Saving up for a 2010 Nissan Xterra. I absolutely love this style! If I could afford it, I would definitely make the 2015 my goal! I hate the curviness/ smoothness of newer SUVs/ crossovers, and I love, love, love the squarer frames of the older (specifically the Xterra).

    As for the "cheap" interior, let me say, bought a new one when they changed the design in 2005, the interior was designed to be able to literally hose out - all seats, including the front, folded completely flat and you could take your garden hose to it and wash the mud, snow and grime out without doing any damage - one of the features that truly came in handy. Also, 6' 4" hubby shattered his ankle and was able to sit in the back seat with the front passenger seat completely folded forward in half to elevate his casted leg in comfort. Has tons of "giddy up". One of my favorite vehicles I've owned. I am sad to hear they will no longer manufacture after 2015.

    I have this exact car, same color, transmission, and interior. I've put roughly 4,000 miles on it and I really enjoy it. This SUV gets a lot of grief in reviews I've read for ride quality, interior refinement, and fuel economy.
    I can honestly say that fuel economy is the only gripe that's justified. I was extremely impressed that low 30's got me a body on frame SUV with Navigation, Backup camera, heated seats, Bluetooth, and arguably the best sound system I've ever heard in an automobile in this price range. The interior has hard plastics but they're put together really well with no rattling or coming loose. I love the fact that I got cloth seats that are heated, that's a hard combination to find. And the cloth doesn't get too hot in the desert summers in New Mexico and the heated seats are perfect when it has gotten cold out.
    The ride quality is actually really good for an off-road inclined SUV. I drive mine around town and it has never gotten too harsh, bumpy, or loud for me.
    The engine is very peppy and quick, I do wish Nissan would've at least put in a 6-speed automatic as the 5-speed occasionally struggles to find the right gear.
    I personally didn't get the wrangler because of the higher price and I did not want the removable roof. If you're in the market for an SUV in the low 30's and you want something a little more manly this really is a good value.

  • @aWhiskeyTangoFoxtrot

      Practically new, and only paid $17,000 for it.
      It was the manual v6.
      I drove it to 225,000 miles, and finally traded it in this year, 2023, and bought a new Chevy Blazer RS.
      I definitely got my money's worth out of it.
      I really liked the rugged look.
      I can't believe they're actually putting 4cyl engines in the mid-size suvs and trucks.

    This guy is not qualified to review this four wheel drive. He is comparing it to a Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Nissan Rogue. Not even close. This is a true body on frame SUV with a fully locking rear differential 4-Wheel drive. It should be compared to Toyota FJ Cruiser, Jeep Wrangler, or Toyota 4-Runner.

    • @daviddraper3700
      @daviddraper3700 8 років тому +2

      Benjamin Lee locking front diff? I think you mean rear.

    • @aliikane
      @aliikane 8 років тому

      You are right. Only very small few have fully locked front/rear differentials (ex Jeep Rubicon). Nowadays many say they are locking but indeed are limited slip differentials and more like AWD but only a few like PRO-4X have a locking rear differential. I have been living in the dark ages. I have had Toyota Landcruiser, Toyota 4X4 truck and both had manual locking front hubs.

    • @victorcreed8856
      @victorcreed8856 8 років тому +4

      I think he was merely referring to the size class. The XTerra was considered a compact SUV from 2000-2004, in the same class as the CR-V/Rav4/TJ. 2005-2015 it's considered a midsize in the same class as the 4Runner and Grand Cherokee, although it's still smaller than either. So he's not completely wrong. The reason they killed the Xterra is because it occupies the same size slot as the Murano, but the Murano costs less to manufacture, sells for more, and gets better mileage.

    • @aliikane
      @aliikane 8 років тому +2

      They discontinued the Xterra because nobody wants real 4WD type trucks with body on frame anymore. Everyone wants crossovers because the ride is smoother and very few people go offroad. I have had nothing but trucks and suvs so I still like the body on frame 4WD suvs even though the ride is not like a refined car.

    The Xterra is still being marketed , albeit overseas. In my opinion it looks awful (the new design); and I'm upset with Nissan for discontinuing the older boxy style. Back in 2016, i bought a 2013 Nissan Xterra 4x4 from CarMax. First car i ever bought there. Can't remember the trim, but it may have been an S. Let me just say , THAT was the best vehicle i ever owned. This thing was a tank. So friggin solid. No creaking or weird noises. And this one only had 30k miles on it when i got it. It was well taken care of. As a birthay gift my wife got me an aftermarket center console screen, with BT, Apple Carplay, Android Auto,and Nav. I bought guards for the front and back lights, aftermarket headlights. It had running boards and rain guard/ deflectors on the windows. Mine was gray with aftermarket black wheels and B/F Goodrich AT tires. They actually came with it when i bought it. My apologies for how stupid this sounds, but this truck was so fuckin' bad ass. Yeah the mpg sucked. I got 20 mpg on a good day. But holy shit, was it fun to drive. Other than the fuel economy, the only other thing I wasn't a fan of was the seats. Not that they were uncomfortable, because they weren't but after a while, they did begin to smell bad from excessive driving. I had to eventually buy seat covers and that pretty much, solved the issue. After almost 7 yrs of loyal service and it only had 81,000 miles, on November 5th of 2022, my car was parked outside a Target in the Bay Area, and apparently some pos was trying to show off his driving "skills" to his buds in his stupid ass truck and loss control and totaled my car and part of someone else's car. He hit it from the driver side front. I was alerted by a voice over the PA system, telling me my license plate number was in an accident. I was overcome with so much anger , an anger i didn't even know one could feel. That was 7 months ago and I still really miss it. We've since bought a new car, a 2023 Kia Sorento hybrid. It's a great car, with a lot of tech, and is pretty damn luxurious, for a midsized suv. The fuel economy is strong to ( 39 mpg hwy) ... but deep down i still really miss my old truck. Yeah these newer SUVs have way more creature comforts, and tech, but it's just not the same. That feeling you get when you take it camping or light off-roading , or driving it down trails, can't be beat. My wife and I drove it to Colorado, and Louisiana from where we live in Northern California. One day I am going to get another one.

The other thing that I like about this car is that it is tall and short.

      shellzcheez I have a '15 Pro-4X, and what you're describing is very, very unusual. Sure, the Xterra has been basically unchanged for a decade, so it's not pretty, but what that also means is that it's essentially about as reliable as a car can get and the engine is damed near bulletproof...just very thirsty, unfortunately. Strong and smooth as hell though.
      The Xterra is one of the only remaining (for now) SUVs that actually delivery the "utility" part; that comes at the cost of being luxurious, but if you have big dogs like I do, dogs that sometimes vomit inside the car, this thing is great.

Seems SUV's that are at least somewhat off road capable are a dying breed. more and more "SUV's" nowadays are nothing more than big cars or small minivans and never meant to even drive on a dirt road let alone mud or anything. I love these older designed vehicles that are more masculine and offroad capable like the xterra and 4runner etc.. Hell even jeep are starting to make less and less true 4x4 SUV's.

    I have a 2003 first generation Xterra with 270,000 km on it. I live in Western Quebec / Eastern Ontario where it will get down to minus 30 in February and the snow can really pile up. I live in a semi-rural area with back-roads and hills. Put snow tires on my vehicle and put it into 4WD and it just eats snow. I've also had it driving hard down logging roads. Fabulous vehicle.

It was a great vehicle to learn in, great power, can go anywhere, comfortable, lots of space. This is one of the only original great SUV's. We went off-roading with our friends who had pickup trucks. WOW, this review was TERRIBLE!!!! Did he seriously just call this a "compact" SUV??? OMG. It's a MIDSIZE SUV!!!!! I've had my 2015 Pro-4X for just over 3 years now and I have nothing but great things to say about it. It has been super reliable and very low maintenance. I love that it's a rugged off-road SUV, but it also has many luxury features and is very comfortable, even on the highway. Mine has the heated leather seats, navigation, Bluetooth, Sirius/XM radio, premium sound system, etc. This is, hands down, the best SUV I have ever owned and I would buy another one in a heartbeat. The reason why people love this vehicle's "old" design so much is because it's one of the last (if not THE last) SUVs that you can still buy that has the true body on frame design. It's not one of those ugly, useless, curvy crossovers that would get stuck in 5 inches of mud. This is a REAL sport utility vehicle. Why do you keep calling it a car??? The Nissan Sentra and Nissan Altima are cars. This is an Xterra, which is FAR from a car. This is an SUV!!!!! If you're doing to review vehicles, at least get your information straight.

    Currently renting one of these for a few days of highway tripping in Northern Ontario Canada driving highway primarily. (Typing this in the middle of my trip.) I tried to get the pathfinder but it wasnt available. I currently own a 2009 ford escape 2Wd V-6. This review was spot on. Its a rugged vehicle, the suspension travel and feel is much like a jeep wrangler. There is alot of nervous wiggling on pavement. However, I was just out at my camp a few days prior ,using a side by side polaris razor on a pipeline road, and this vehicle could handle that rough trail/ road easily. On the highway for passing, it blew by transports easily giving me a good safety margin on our two lane highways here in with few passing lanes. In comparison to my escape v-6 it feels rugged solid and heavy. The escape feels light and nimble in comparison although even without the AWD drivetrain and resultant weight the escapes motor seems like a sewing machine . I roof rack alot of gear on my escape, like standup paddleboards and wet gear, and the roof rack on this seems it could handle alot of heavy gear I have to laugh though as most of these i see are daily drivers, polished and well washed and do not see a foot of dirt road. Much like the Wrangler poser crowd. Good review.

    I own the truck in 6 speed cloth 2014. My only complaints are panel buzzing from bass in rockford system, and gas. But Jeep has the worst build quality/reliability, all cars today are actually built like shit. My 1988 420 SEL would outlast a new Jeep. I will say while the xterra interior materials are cheap, what matters is not. The 6 speed manual is indestructible, the chassis and suspension are tough as hell, and the engine is great, and everything is simple and will work well into the apocalypse. Whenever an AMG G wagon or Range Rover pass me I think, wow, I'll never be in the shop as much as those morons. I love my pro 4, and I am looking forward to doing custom work on it in the future.

    • @pappyodanial
      @pappyodanial 10 років тому +1

      About 11k now - I got the manual 6 speed gear box they've been using since the early frontier, you could put a slug in it and would still shift. can't speak for the auto, and wouldn't want to. I recommend it if you don't mind a bouncing ride and you like running over shit. If you want a relaxed cruising truck, it's not for you. It's busy on the road, sways a bit, and while the shock and spring setup are durable and can punch through a lot, it's just a very busy ride. steering is also tighter than normal because it has a beefed up rack, some people might not like that but it helps the forearms grow.

      I highly recommend it. I have 38,000 on my 2012 Pro 4x-manual. IT sucks on gas but you know that going in. It does take about 17,000 miles before it is really broken in however. You're a boss on the road in this thing. I do put snows on in the winter(custom wheels) as the summer tires cut it but I am in Buffalo and the snow is for real. If you are an impatient driver or want to do 85mph on the highway...this is not the vehicle for you. If you want to rule the world...this is your vehicle. Don't get an automatic.
      They are a waste in general...not just this vehicle.

    Bought the 2015 XTerra Pro 4-X last year and LOVE it. Test drove the Jeep Rubicon and Suburu Forester Touring in addition. I wanted an SUV that felt like and SUV and not a vehicle I'd be afraid to get dirty, but still be stylish. I still have my sedan, but when we take the Prox 4-X out out to the country, it doesn't disappoint. The turn radius is tight. This model was hard to get in my area. When we ordered it to our specs, local dealer had to get it from Oklahoma. There are lots of XTerra's in town, but only 1 Pro-4X model. :)

    The Xterra is one of the only SUV's that's maintained its boxy design over the years, it and the Jeep Wrangler/Unlimited. At 10, there's no reason to redesign it, just like the Wrangler/Unlimited... it looks awesome the way it is.. plus this design allows for "real" 4WD... I drive a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4X4 and I don't need the latest features like push-button start or keyless access. (: I do find it odd that this thing has sixteen-inch rims on the top-of-the-line model in 2015.

    What drew me to the Xterra over the Wrangler was that it's essentially a short box Frontier, so you actually get some real payload and towing capacity. Also price. The X is a steal compared to the Wrangler. My Xterra has leather, a Rockford/Fosgate sound system that kicks, Nav, off road lights, locking rear axle straight out of the old Titan, Bilstein suspension, underbody protection (could be thicker gauge, but nonetheless, it's there and it works), and good AT tires, and not to forget that silky sweet VQ40 motor, and I got it roughly for the price of a basic Wrangler Sahara.

    We have owned our Xterra Off Road Edition ( 6 speed manual) since 2005 and it's a beast. We have not put much into it as far as expenses. Tires, breaks, and a battery. We are looking to replace out Xterra sometime soon, and may wait till the next generation of Xterra's. Hope Nissan keeps the same rugged truck platform. Drove ours through 10 New England winters and have commuted to work through countless snow storms. It kind a is what it is. It's a solid real 4WD, with out much fancy stuff to go wrong.

    I dont know why people call this a compact SUV. This vehicle is by no means compact. This is a midsized SUV. I know that because it's pretty obvious if you see it in person. But with that out of the way, this is a great SUV. It also handles GREAT for a midsize truck based SUV. It even out handles my mom's 2003 Honda Element which is smaller(thus being a compact SUV(crossover actually)) and even has a slightly firmer ride than the Xterra. I know that because I driven both vehicles.

    Thanks for this nice review. I own 2014 automatic leather pro 4 X and really appreciate this SUV here in Canada. Skiing winter time camping and towing trailer in summer. Fuel economy is not the best and interior sucks. But the way you feel when you hit the road, view from driver's seat, this feeling of being behind the beast just shadows all other cons. I do also have custom 17" rims with wider winter tires on it which makes it perfect vehicle for winter. I'll probably get one used compact sized sedan for daily driving/fuel economy like BMW 3 series or Honda civic but definitely keeping this guy in my garage for years coming to have reliable/tough machine.
