Weather is awful in the UK and the EU , max is around 10 degrees ???? Should be 20 now ? Looks like no summer again like last year unless in France but it was almost 40 last year there ...OMG.....
Epic race.....only 44 riders finishing....most of these top riders stopped for the greater goal next sunday....although the prediction is that the Weather won't be all that great on Sunday as well!!!
My god I am doing the 255 liege bastogne liege sportive on saturday and yeah, weather forecast looks like shit. I see fleche wallone footage and it looks like a horror movie I have to affront
@@123oner2Don’t blame the teams, it’s the riders being extremely low weight nowadays. They just don’t have any reserves and depend solely on quick energies gels. But the body can only use those at the speed the digestion and other functions are able to distribute the energy. A bit of fat and muscle mass will enabled you to withstanding hard conditions, if you’re build like a skeleton you will suffer.
@@angrydoggy9170 errrr, no. It's the team's job to know about the weather and ensure the riders are best equipped to succeed in the race. Also, the riders training programmes are created by the team, vis a vis, their bodies are like they are due to the team.
@@123oner2 Their bodies are like that because they have to be to win races. Their equipment isn’t suited for harsh conditions because it has to be extremely lightweight. Riders can opt out, they can choose not to work under these conditions.
@@angrydoggy9170 Mate it's the state of bike racing. If some teams had made better clothing choices they'd have had a better chance of being competitive in the race. Bye
i looked it up and damn. 21 riders finished due to a snowstorm, hinault won by nearly 10 minutes but suffered frostbite on two fingers which took weeks to heal and caused him pain for years
People always confuse hail with graupel. Hail rarely occurs in a cold temperature storm as it requires intense ground warmth to lift it repeatedly up into tall thunderstorms. What occurred during this race was graupel, which is rime ice and is closer to snow.
I don't understand how teams like UAE Trek and Ineos didn't anticipate the change in weather but supposedly inferior teams like Arkéa and Uno X prepared their races really well, I don't know if they should let it go or a lack of skill in certain teams but observing the evolution of the weather is still the basis of cycling.
Rode a Gran Fondo in similar conditions this past weekend so I fully understand some of the rider's decision to pull out. 10 degrees with rain is COLD, especially while descending
THIS! How come Uno X were excited for the bad weather the day before (right expecting that they would do well with it) and others were completely caught out? The commentators mentioned how difficult it was to get back to the cars due to the small, winding roads. But if you are expecting basically the apocalypse, surely you also plan for that. Uno X obviously did.
I was cold just watching them. That was one brutal race. I'm surprised that many finished in the lead bunch. They were still shaking on the podium. Uno X finishing with 6 riders was awesome, but they planned ahead. I was why didn't other teams do the samething, but what an epic race.
Because someone at the UCI doesn't like the look of long socks. I don't think you have to think about a more complex reason. It's the same with the s-works helmet sock. The UCI bans things on aesthetic grounds alone from time to time.
The UCI sock rule is that they can only come halfway up the calf muscle. I do t know what the aero advantage is with long bibs, but I’d imagine that in conditions like those, preserving body warmth trumps aero gains.
brrrr, I still remember last year checking out the region over there. A promising spring afternoon changed into a thunder with lightning filled sky and heavy Belgian rain. Climbing mur de Huy and La Redoute like it is meant to be. Heroic conditions but thinking back to it I now feel sorry for the guys today...
I went in mid-October to ride solo LBL challenge 155km route, cold and wet but still way better conditions than today! But the weather was tricky, just a day before was short-short.
This reminds me of a race I participated in as a teenager. One guy was caught off guard by the side wind and got blown into the trench. Temperature dropped by more than ten degrees. Going uphill, the water came pouring down the street. Going downhill, the brakes on my carbon wheels just said "no", more or less. Having lost the peloton a long time before, I abandoned after around 45 / 110 km, and of more then 100 riders, around 20 finished that thing.
Steve Williams had double rain jackets I think ? Benji shared scary fan vid of Skelmose hyper therm shaking… had to be carried over road . Really bad 😢
Amazing to see Søren Kragh Andersen attempt to go for the stage win like that. He's been a rider on my watch-list after seeing his two TDF stage wins. Quite interesting to see the color diversity in these conditions compared to the usual all-black jackets teams love to employ. Uno-X, how many UCI points did they get out of this race with all of their riders finishing?
I remember ditching Williams from my PCS team as soon as possible because his stats were shit and didn't seem to have potential either. As such I still scratch my head about his development. But that's just a much needed reminder that stats in games are just made up by random devs and say nothing about real riders and their potential years down the road.
honestly dont understand why you would dress in short sleeves and pants for this weather. Even if you are used to the cold, it will still affect your performance. Once you are cold it becomes almost impossible to ever get warm again, especially with the wet. In the end a rider dressed in all longs won..
It is interesting how so many people think the winner of the Amstel Gold race is the favorite for Fleche Wallone. Only 4 riders in the history of these tw races have done the double, those being David Rebellin, Danillo di Luca, Phillip Gilbert and Tadej Pogacar. The odds are low for a double, it seems like lazy picking Tom without considering that fact, I am specifically pointing out cycling news and velonews. BTW who would predict ineos would have zero finishers and Uno-x would have the full team finish.
That’s what happens if you train to be extremely light and you fully depend on constant quick energy. Some belly fat would take you through these conditions without problems.
I don’t watch cycling much; can someone explain why riders, even from different teams, tend to ride in groups? Do they use each others’ slipstreams for better aerodynamics? Or is it something else?
Just shows a weakness of most pros - they go to hot climates every winter to keep training easy but you need to train in the cold to prepare for the bad days.
In the end a lot of cyclists dumped their rain jackets on the ground. Do spectators get to keep those? They cost a fortune on their online stores lucky people
Kudos for the winner. He didn't give a shit about the weather and also said in the interview he actually enjoyed it. Hell yeah!! That's the spirit, not like all the other pussies that quit 😂😂
