You have to Respect them as a person just because you have a degree doesnt mean you down play thier job. Just remember not to refer to them as my paraprofessionals they have names they are not your personal assistant they are not your maid.
Very true I was a paraprofessional and many times other teachers tried to treat me as a personal helper. I am now starting as a special education teacher. Be respectful allow paras to share their name and about their family. Work as a team!!!
I AM A PARA COACH AND I HAVE ENJOYED WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS THEY ARE HELPING ME TO BUILD OUT A PARA RESOURCE BOOK FOR MY SCHOOL DISTRICT. THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO!
Holy cow - a teacher who doesn’t think he/she /they don’t need to have relationships with children in the classroom does not belong in a school!!! Absolutely loved your point about everybody has expertise in something pay scale is not the determining factor of knowledge or experience!
Im a 1:1 para pro on year 2, with a high school student, which I love. We lost our long time spec ed teacher do to admin, our new teacher came into our self contained room. 2 -1:1 paras and a 3rd general para. She refused to enlist our help, told my coworker she cant communicate with her student and genuinely left us to work with our kiddos on break and at lunch only. She burned out fast and quit in the middle of the quarter and on a Thursday. My point is this, the paras are part of your team, please let them be part of your plans. If you can only imagine, its taken several weeks to help our kiddos recover from this abrupt change in their day. We have a long term sub finishing out the year and us paras are left to pick up the pieces. We want teachers to succeed. Kids succeed, remember we can and want to help. Sorry this is long. Thank you for your video.
Wow thank you, your video has inspired me all the more I’m starting a paraprofessional position next week and I’m a little nervous but ready to make an impact in a child’s life
Wow that is great! Hopefully you will love your new position. Speak up at work, ask questions, observe the teacher, and focus on the kids! Let me know if there are other things that could benefit paraprofessionals that I can add to my channel.
I just got hired as a paraprofessional to gain classroom experience as a work toward my degree. I’ve been working in healthcare for many years so I’ve been really nervous about switching to a different field. Your video has made me feel so much better!
I really appreciate your videos. I've been teaching general ed for 27 years and am headed back to school to begin teaching special ed in the fall. Your videos are really inspiring and helpful!
I watched a few other of your videos that came up when I searched paraprofessionals & I’m so glad I found your channel! I hope the teachers I assist are like you & appreciate us parapros! I’m gaining a lot of knowledge & inspiration from your channel! I am enjoying your journey from para to special Ed teacher to administration & beyond! God bless you for all you do for others! New subscriber! 💝🤗
Hi! I'm from South Dakota and am currently a junior studying special education. I found your video so motivational, especially because I have been having doubts about my own abilities as a future educator. I have been contemplating my preparedness for being a classroom teacher in almost a year primarily because there are so many responsibilities and duties. I found it comforting that you found ease and further guidance while being a teacher aid/ paraprofessional. I thinking furthering my education by receiving my masters, much like you did, would further solidify my confidence. I look forward to viewing more of your videos! :-)
You are more prepared than you think! I think that most challenging part of the job as a special educator is working with adults, not kids. As long as you communicate effectively and stay organized you will do amazing! If you continue on to your Master's you will be even more prepared.
Hey .....I am a Exceptional Teacher Assistant ( this fall, begins my 23 rd year ) I am also an EC School Bus Driver. I Love ❤️ our Students : My School Bus kids call our Bus , Our School.bus Family. You done a Quality Professional Job with your video. I appreciate your respect and kindness towards Teacher Assistant ( I am old school LOL .... it is hard for me to say Instructional Assistant or Paraprofessional ) May the Lord Bless you with your career. Your Students will Love you .......your Heart is in your career and you will be awesome for the students. Thank you for what you do.
Hi I just wanted to say that you were on target with pretty much every point that you gave I really appreciate how you speak a paraprofessionals I'm actually a paraprofessional for a special education special life skills and I work 2 years and I'm actually going to school to be a special education teacher I will finish in 2 years and yeah being in the classroom has taught me so much that I'm excited to hurry up and finish school so that I can become my own special education teacher and start teaching in the classroom but I just want to say that was a wonderful video and you're right on target with it and I love that you appreciate and hope other people appreciate the paraprofessionals and everything that they do and helping students and teachers and everybody collaborate together to make the best of education.
👍 Sped para for 7 years! I spent most of my time in a self contain room. My teacher that I worked with for 4 years went to another school. We were perfect together, and we never said anything negative to each other in those 4 years. I love my job!
Love your video, I’m going into my forth year as a payed para (volunteered in summer school at the same district before that) and am going to school for OT. I wish there were more teachers like you. I have had teachers who love and appreciate support and feedback, I have had others make you fell that you are not appreciated and look down on you
Some teachers are just not humble to collaboration! Also, OT is so important! I work with many OT's! I hope school is going well. But thank you so much for your encouragement!
Awesome video. I think it's funny you apologize for the lighting.... I started as a para then transitioned to teaching, and I clicked on this video in the hopes that it would help me work with paras better. I think your video shows me that I'm doing too much. I need to work on backing off and giving more to the para.
@@thatspecialeducator1061 hi love your video and I'm gonna start my certificate program for teacher's aide in the summer any tips for me after i graduate because i want to help teens and young that has a disability and want to be a good role model to them by being a good example by guiding them
I applied to a program that would allow me to train to be a Special Ed teacher while I am teaching. I applied to be a paraeducator because I was afraid of not being able to teach for another year. I recently was hired to be a paraeducator in a high school. I have looked at many videos about being a special ed teacher including previous videos of yours. I just watched your video about working with Paraeducators. I think I might prefer to be a para first but, I need to make up for the salary I missed out on. Part of me wants to keep the para position and learn from the teacher and other paraprofessionals. But I have been COVID unemployed since March 2020. I want to do well in either role.
Hi! This is very helpful and the only one of this kind. I think that your job must take up too much of your time, but I would love to see more videos from you like this.
I have been hired as a paraprofessional just recently (about 4 days) and the teachers really have not engaged me at all? I continue to interact with the children that need my assistance but most of my teachers do not even collaborate with me? I say good morning and no response. I am not given lessons or was even introduced in most of my classes as taking over for another paraprofessional. I am a para for a highschool (various grades and over 48 students in my case load). I am new to this field and was not even given an orientation to the school or anything? Is this normal? Any advice for me? Thank you so much in advance.
Hi, today is my first day as a paraprofessional, im excited but worry at he same time, i come frome mexico and my language is not perfecti, i mean, english, any advice for that?
Be a model to the children on how to be curious about learning. We are all always learning, your character is more important and will be appreciated most by coworkers and students. The English language will come with time. Watch TV and read newspapers in English daily.
What kind of supplies do you take with you to work? I.e. tote bag, etc. I will be starting my new job first week of oct after i heal from my surgery. Thanks in advance.
This video was awesome! But some help with the reverse effect? How do you handle when you have paraprofessionals that have their degree but try to take over your room? Or, because you are young in your career, question your motives in a negative way? I have been in this situation and has made me defensive and insecure. Please help!
I felt number four was so outrageous. Why would someone say that in class. Everyone in the classroom wether its 2 of 4 people should always have a relationship with their students.I was baffled you even had to talk about that. I would reprise number four. It was hard to interpret, I struggled understanding your message.
Got my first paraprofessional job while I finish up my masters degree and I’m so happy to have found your channel!
That is awesome! I did that too! Such good experience!
Me too! Hoping to be a lead teacher Fall 2021. 🙌🏾

Going into my first year as a paraprofessional until I finish my teaching degree
Thanks for your honesty and insight.
I'm a para and I have an undergraduate degree in applied behavior. Today is my first day doing this new adventure 😁 wish me luck 💕
Hi! It’s been a year ! How are you doing? Cuz it was my first day as a para! I am curious if you still work in the same field :-)
Thank you so much for this awesome information

They feel threatened by your presence there
Stay humble.. Enjoy those kids. The best is yet to come!

Speak in your naive language sometimes with words like hello and goodbye. This will add to their vocabulary 😉
