I loved the Muppet Show back then, and I love seeing how they did it all for that show and Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, etc. Fun and entertaining and sometimes smarter than anyone notices, good for adults and kids. (I didn't care for the recent snide reboot attempt, though.) The Muppets are great. And what they did in Dark Crystal, Farscape, and so on, was super, so innovative and smart.
It is great to sit back and watch these postings. My husband and I are huge muppet fans and recently went to Leland, MS (where Jim was born) to visit the Jim Henson museum.
So great that we've gotten to a point in technology where we can share videos like this! continues inspiring countless children and adults decades later..such power
jim henson the original man of great clean brilliant comedy. R.I.P jim henson you are truly missed and you may be gone but you are definately not forgotten.
People forget this show was filmed in England and syndicated around the world, because no American network wanted a puppet show in prime time (much like animation, puppets had become considered a dumb thing that little kids watch). Remember Land of Gorch in the first season of SNL and how hated it was
Very true, but according to Jim Henson's biography by Brian Jay Jones it was the performers of SNL, like John Belushi, that hated the Muppets on SNL because any screentime the Muppets got meant that it deprived them of precious screentime that they wanted for themselves. Belushi also called them the Mucking Fuppets,
Oz is one of the most vocal people on my previous comment. People ask him how he came up with so and so's voice, and the response is typically.. i didn't.. i perform the character, and then voice becomes synonymous with that character...... ofcourse that's not always the case (ie, Elmo sounds nothing like Kevin Clash)
18 years ago? Franz Oz joined Jim Henson in 1963, so that means this was made in 1981. This HAS to be included in one of the Muppet Show DVD sets. Lots of great live footage of Jim and the gang.
interesting you mention that. Most of the voices you'll notice are very similar to the original performer.. i think it's b/c it wasnt the voice that made the character but rather the performance, and the voice just sort of comes from that.
With the new movie bringing in hordes of new fans, I think a lot of them are going to watch this and learn the history! They also need to know that the Muppet Show was filmed in England, not Hollywood!
This is amazing!! Where did you find this?!?! I used to take the book of this out of the library all the time when I young. That book is now out of print. I never knew there was a tv special of this.
microphones.. and i'll assume we all know why .. lol but since they use their hands for many things, and often in cramped spaces, a clip on mic wouldn't work, a standing or hanging mic is impractical, so the head mic, with foam filter on the tip and headband to make it comfy.. and the style of the headband.. just another reason them to dress funny
I hardly think any Jim Henson did was against your black bros. I like to think he broke down even more color barriers by showing that orange and green could work together.

My wife just got me an old copy of the classic book of the same name for Christmas and I love it!
What a great documentary! I've watched this hundreds of time It never gets old.
Eric Jacobson does a brilliant job in recreating Frank's characters.
Thanks so much for posting this. I have despaired that Disney will ever put this on DVD.
2:41 . . . lmfao how Kermit tries to karate chop Piggy. XD
This is so cool! It sort of takes away from the magic but I don't care. It's cool!
Splendid! Star Wars and the Muppets; two gems that the states refused to make, but the UK caught the vision.
Fantastic, great! We loved it!
The Muppets But the Wonderful Group for all the ages... I had liked much to work with them, since I dedicate myself to the Puppets
This is absolutely awesome!! Thanks for posting!
Frank Oz is the man. Who else could voice both Ms. Piggy and Yoda
also Fozzie, Animal, Sam the Eagle, Grover, Bert, Cookie Monster, Marvin Suggs, Augrah etc

The Swedish chef!! LOL!!
Like how Frank Oz's voice sounds very familiar to Fozzie Bear's.
0:13 : so THAT'S where lady gaga got her inspiration for her "Judas" video :P
I saw a feature on BBC news 24 a few weeks ago that said it was coming back
This is amazing!! Where did you find this?!?! I used to take the book of this out of the library all the time when I young. That book is now out of print. I never knew there was a tv special of this.
Long live the Muppets
Pause it at 3:45. Clean that up just a bit in Photoshop and it would make one hell of a Muppet postcard. :)
the engagement is off HIIIIIIIIIYA!! Kermie dear dear sweetheart its not like that its like this HIIIIIIIIIYA!!
Oh I get it now thanks.
You mean hands UP!
Well, the droids were on Sesame Street in the 70s too.
you can hear kermit's voice in Jim henson's
Jim Henson once cracked at a Hollywood awards show that he had a frog in his throat. That never got the laughter it deserved.

Oh I get it now, but there's one thing.
What dose the P stands for?
You said you don't think fig is a word. Well it is, it's a noun. :p

@thispartsux No, they don't.
(Not saying did he did against anyone)
@Arthur5041975 Well Jim Henson want the world better when he's gone.
I hardly think any Jim Henson did was against your black bros. I like to think he broke down even more color barriers by showing that orange and green could work together.
A fig is a fruit?
I don't understand that.
He said that because a frog mixed with a pig is fig
Everyone thinks that in order to be creative, you have to take drugs. It just isn't true.
Sesame street went to PC pot after Henson died. What a shame
@Foundlilly11 No not like that it's just I don't like Andy's jock.
Gee I don't like dumb jokes even fig jokes and I don't think fig is a word.
What are those werid things on their heads and why?
A fig is a fruit.
What?! Its all fake?!! Im kinda disappointed.....
my son hates the muppets
