It's nice to see the 600/650si get a little love from someone. The 600si was the first "modern" SLR I ever bought. It was the late 90's and I really liked it. The controls felt incredibly intuitive, especially compared to what Nikon and Canon where offering in my price point at the time. That camera got so much use from me that one day the mirror literally flew off the bracket that held it into place. That was probably around 2011 or so at which point I bought a used Maxxum 7.
Great review .. I still to this very day use my Minolta Maxxum cameras as there is nothing like a fine film camera .. i own the 8000i , 9000 and i finally located in 1997 the wonderful 9xi nothing like it , one of the finest 35mm cameras i have ever used..Your model i have never seen where i live ..well done ..
I know this is 8 years old but a video like this, just as in depth for the a9 would be amazing for me! If you have one and have the time, that would be appreciated 🙏
Tomorrow I am going to buy a set of batteries and power on my dynax 7 which is now switched off for last 10years Watching your video was very inspiring and thank you for doing it I think I have a perl which I wasn't aware of :)
Fantastic review. Fantastic camera! None of the usual waffling, but concise useful information. Fantastic camera I was spellbound for 47 minutes. I don't use Minolta but I am on eBay right now.
This camera is amazing for film!!! I can't believe it didn't sell like crazy or that it doesn't have a crazy high used cost. Id love for you do do one on the 7d. You go very far into details. I've wanted a nice film camera, just to have and you've help. me decided this is the one.
Seems like an awesome camera. I'm worried though it might suffer from reliability issues. I've seen many people complain about the aperture control electronics breaking down, and this camera seems to suffer from cosmetic defects to the lcd and plastics over time.. what's your take on this? In your opinion is it worth taking the chance? Or should i stick with something more rugged like a traditional F100?
thank you for this awesome review. I've been thinking about getting a film camera and was wondering if I should get a nikon f100 or this. Thanks again for the great detailed review.
Great video but What about the 7Xi from your list of from 1991 which was very inattentive with all the program cards which started features like leaving the tab out after rerolling the film auto bracketing ect. I owned one from about 1993 until I broke the lens mount after it fell in 2003.
Sweet camera and review! I noticed it doesn't have a visible Bulb mode and the shutter button isn't threaded to allow for a cable release. Are these features buried in the menu system somehow?
There is a cable release port, not standard, Minolta proprietary and a bulb mode is in manual mode after the 30 s time. there is a wireless remote control too.
That looks like a super fast AF point selection system. Really nifty. Out of curiosity, after you've auto focused on a subject, is it simply a matter of selecting another AF point to focus on another part of the screen without any additional steps? I have a Canon EOS 30 35mm film SLR and the AF selection system on that is a nuisance. If you want to change from one active AF point to another, you've got to do about three or four additional steps which wastes so much time. Meanwhile, your subject may have moved out of the frame by the time you've selected the next point.
I like the 600 si that came out in 1995. Im looking at a Maxxum 7 for $30 shipped..and thinking of getting it...no lens..but I have alot of a mount lens that I also use on my Sony A57......
I’m trying to decide between this and the Maxxum 9. The 9 is made of metal and weather sealed but the 7 has that digital back and is made of plastic. I have a plastic camera and it’s good but I’m wondering if I should go with the 9 for the extra build quality
I thought that device on the strap was used to cover the viewfinder when using the timer so no light will get into the back thru the viewfinder. I seen you said this later on in the video...
Thank you for this video!! Such a help. For some reason when I move to 3 on the mode dial there is no STF, only a 3P. Is there anything else I should be doing to get to stf?
Cool just got one on eBay. Need to pick up some lenses now :D I wonder how critical the viewfinder cover is? It seems the one I've bought on eBay doesn't come with a strap.
+Alan Newman I was in the same situation and bought my strap after buying the camera. The viewfinder cover's only purpose is to prevent light coming from the viewfinder from confusing the light meter. This is only important if you take a photo when your eye is not against the viewfinder and the light behind you is strong. So really not that critical but I wanted it for completeness. Thanks for your comment and I am glad you found the video useful.
+BluYote Photo cheers. Have tested and it seems to be easily affected by light through viewfinder so looking for a cover now. There's a mark on the focus screen glass I couldn't clean off, but looks like it's only had 40 rolls of film through it and otherwise is in good condition. Some things I got confused with and figured out in custom settings: 1. AF/R priority - AF releases shutter only when it thinks something's in focus. 4. DX memory - keeps custom ISO settings if on. E.g. you put in ISO 100 film and decide to push it to ISO 200, set this to on and change ISO and it will remember for next film. 5. Film release lock - think this just prevents shutter being released without film in. 6. FocusHold button - only applicable to lenses with the button. 16. Lens release lock - I presume this allows shutter to release when no lens detected. 23. Shutter-r button - turn off for back button focus with af button, which seems to prevent eye start working. 27. Detailed display - not sure what this does - presume something like it sounds but couldn't see a change, I left it on. 28. Operation display - displays settings in big when you change them (but only on display with things in big). 29-31. Seem to correspond to one of the displays cycled through when you press "disp".
You can always change the exposure look button to toogle in the custom settings, measure the exposure with the eye in the viewfinder, make a look with the button and that's it.
I should have got this camera before I have too many film cameras now to stuff in my closet. Sexy camera I must say though... maybe I'll get it if I downsize or even possibly sell off my less used cameras.
Note for new users to the camera: the silver lenses are cheaper but exactly the same as the black variants. Aesthetically its not very pretty, but if youre looking to save on a good 35-60mm lens its worth checking out.
You have the best knowledge of this model. Well done! Thank you.
The nifty 50mm f/1.7 built in lens hood just BLEW MY MIND.

I just got a 600si...and looking forward to using it...How much did your 600si cost when you got it???
Just got mine. Watched your video like 5 years ago. Wanted one ever since, just got one for my birthday

Awesome Review.... watched it all the way through, without noticing it’s length.... 👍👍
Just got my Dynax 7 in the last week. Really useful video. Many thanks.
This is an incredible video review/tutorial. Perhaps the best I've ever seen on any camera. Impressive. Nice job.
Tomorrow I am going to buy a set of batteries and power on my dynax 7 which is now switched off for last 10years
Watching your video was very inspiring and thank you for doing it
I think I have a perl which I wasn't aware of :)
Just got this camera yesterday, and you've answered pretty much every question I had about it! Thanks!

Incredible review!!! Very much appreciated :)
This is an amazing review. Thank you very much!
Thanks for this video. I just bought one and this is so helpful.
Thanks for the awesome review. You really cover most!!!! Thanks again!!!
Extremely helpful. Amazing vid😍
Excellent overview!
Your review was awesome. I purchased an alpha 7 recently and I will skip the users manual, as it is retro digital.
Thanks for the awesome review. I have a maxxum 7 and your video really helped me out.

The dynax or maxxum 7 was the basis of the digital 7D

Excellent review. I have an old one and will buy another newer. Can you tell how the serial numbers shall be interpreted?
Thank you so much for this!
Fantastic review! I have to get one now!
Great tutorial. Learned more than I ever new or thought I would know. Did you ever do a follow up?

The metering system! wowww

Bellísima 😊

Just remember, the 9 doesn't support SSM lenses out of the box, it needs an update in order to work
@@SmalltimR I just went with the Nikon f5 instead. It works perfectly with almost all Nikon f lenses even the newer g lenses
It seems very interesting camera
Thank you for this

In custom menu you have to go to 25 position and set to second value.
Can you have the honeycomb metering overview always on in M mode, or at least change the button so you don't have to hold the AEL and disp button?

Can you use a Sony hvl f60m flash with a adapter on this camera?
yes you can
I’ve never heard of this camera and bought the Canon F1 for wedding work, I’m selling it for this camera.
